A comic within Duke Nukem's realm (using Build+Mapster32)

Hey there,

During the latest couple of months, I've thought of applying an old thing. Oh and, before you're asking, this is just a one-time event.
The thing to apply: Construct a Duke Nukem themed comic with Build and/or Mapster32, along with a few more tools like GIMP.
If this rings a bell for anybody, here is the possible explanation: A few years ago, there used to be a website hosting several comics of that kind, with Duke Nukem and the Doomguy starring most of the time (and sometimes Walter Bennett). Actually, there were a couple of such websites: First "This Strife", later renamed to "That Strife", and then "Strife Strips".

The comics were simply called "Strifes". So, what I'm bringing here is a new (unofficial) Strife for you!

======

For a few more details and for viewing the comic (two parts), see this: http://ny.duke4.net/...cialstrife.html

======

Oh yeah, a few of you may ask:
"Recently, the guy who was responsible for hosting the original Strife sites, Peter Bridger (also known as Maverick), has put up older Strifes on the web again.
Could that be what has motivated you to work on the new Strife?"

Well, I guess the answer is "yes" and "no". Saying it has zero impact sounds very wrong for me, but it's also true I've considered working on the Strife not long before the older comics have been put up.

======

NOTE: For the ones who think I should have posted in the earlier "Selected Strife Contents" thread: The reason I have rather started a new thread, is that I don't actually describe here an instance of old "Selected Strife Contents". For convinience, though, the new comics have been uploaded to the same section on the website. A forum threads merger may be applied if one thinks it should be done, though.

Kind of a cute little concept, but you should really consider getting someone to proof-read your dialog. I'm gathering English isn't your first language. Also, self-insert .../nothankyou

Hehe that was pretty fun. I thought it was very much in the same spirit of the original Strife comics. ^^ Keep at it, I'd like to see some more as you progress. ^^

That is absolutely correct.

Well, given the fact that the original Strifes had clear misspellings (many of which are intended, probably), I think that I may keep these for the "spirit" :P.

Thanks for the encouragement! I think it's time for "bad and good news", though:

- The bad: You may have seen that I consider this a one-time event. So, while I know that you may wish for more Strifes, I'm almost surely done with this for now. As I'm going to detail soon, it can take a while to construct a single episode.

- The good: What about, say, you, working on your own episode :)? It may take some time to bring one to the web, though. Even if you have a plot in your mind, occurring in a known DN3D map or two, it can take at least several hours to construct the Strife. This includes the usage of Mapster32, some photographing app like Photoshop or GIMP (for all kinds of frame editing) and more.
Alright, as I've used the old Build editor for DOS (along with Mapster32), I've also had to deal with the importing of a few assets like the Doomguy. Think of EditArt and alternatives, palette conversion issues, etc. I do, however, agree that some of these may be less troublesome if you agree to use Mapster32 or EDuke32. I refer to features like: 8-bit tile replacements using individual image files and the DEF Language.
Oh, one more thing to add: Trying out some things I'm inexperienced with. Forgotten experience is also a relevant case. Importing GIF files instead of BMP with EditArt is a minor example (and something that I knew long ago); A greater one is making an appearance of the Doomguy MD2 model from the jDRP!

In case a compatible Windows server app is not an issue, maybe the Strip Editor can help (I've got a backup of the editor which you may find... somewhere, in the relevant Strife section). It may need an older browser (version) in order to work properly, though. I'm also unsure it's intended for more than the shorter Strife Strips, although you can merge such strips into a single, long(er) comic, probably.

Thanks again to everybody!

ONE DAY LATE EDIT (Dec 31): I should clarify here that it is unclear if we see any of the sources for Keen 1-5 released. Furthermore, most misspellings in the comic (if not all) were made on purpose, kind-of in the spirit of the original Strife comics. Oh yeah, and another minor edit has been done to this post at the very bottom.

It may have been long, but there is an update. While more than three months have passed since the release of the Keen Dreams source codes, this may still be considered a reason for another so-called "Unofficial Strife" comic. Some details are in this post, but first I'll link to the comic itself:

http://ny.duke4.net/...s_vacation.html

This is the place to get into these few details. It is actually the case that "Keen's Vacation" was originally completed just a few days after Keith Kaisershot (aka ablitter) successfully extracted original Commander Keen 4-6 sources from a Syquest disk retrieved from Tom Hall, which at least some of you probably know about. While original sources for 1-3 were further found by John Romero, and all sources were sent to id, given the time passed so far it's currently unclear if we'll see any of the 1-5 sources released (6 is stripped for a different reason, being the probable lack of publishing rights).

While I could've kept the comic to myself for longer, I've thought it should still be good to not let it go to waste. There have been only a couple of edits to the comic and the page in which it appears:
- The text on the top of the first image (on the top left) is edited. Originally it was 2-lines long and said (what hasn't happened so far, even just with 4-5): "Following the release of the Commander Keen 4-6 source code, we meet our fellas in SWEENEY.MAP"
- A half-life.wikia.com link has been updated at the bottom (screenshots showing Walter Bennet).
- The date text above the comic itself was originally "???? ??th, 2013".
