Are the Duke Nukem PS1 games canon?

I was thinking today about if the Duke Nukem games on the PS1 (Time to Kill and Land of the Babes) are canon or not. If so then that would mean everyone in DNF would be related to Duke somehow as all the men where killed and Duke repopulated the planet.

People say that they are set in the future after DNF but others say it's before as people praised Duke for his actions from the past (most likely DN3D). In my opinion I think they are not canon but spin-offs from the main Duke timeline (Duke Nukum, Duke Nukem II, Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem Forever).

I think I've read somewhere that the console Duke games are not canon, but I have no idea what was the exact reason, or where I read that in the first place for that matter <_<

AFAIK, the canonical timeline is Duke Nukem I -> Duke Nukem II -> Duke Nukem 3D, and then I suppose DNMP and DNF. What is certain is that Duke3D happens almost immediately after the events in DN2.

I think you could see them as another timeline, i don't count them as a sequel or prequel, just fun Duke games where Duke is minding his own business when suddenly the aliens come back to piss off Duke Nukem even more.
It's like Manhattan Project, it is not a sequel nor a prequel, just a fun Duke game.

They don't officially count as canon, but the 'official' canon is shot to hell and doesn't make sense anyway.

I strongly discourage anyone from wasting their brainpower on any sort of Duke canon.

I agree, but so many people are obsessed with canon.

Well, establishing some sort of continuity is necessary for churning out sequels, isn't it?

Not really. Some franchises simply don't care.

Each successive game treats both itself and its predecessor as a game in its world in a recursive way. That's about all the canon there is.

I never heard from any "official source" that Duke Nukem was born in 1967...as it states that on the Duke Nukem Wiki page. People, Duke does NOT really have a canon. Those looking for a deep Final Fantasy-type story in this series, are either stupid, or just doesn't really understand the concept of Duke Nukem.

Just because some people want a little bit of canon doesn't mean they want a "deep Final Fantasy-type story", nor does it mean they are stupid. Having a story really helps games. Even though Duke totally kicks ass on his own, it's nice to have some story of why he's kicking the ass or why the aliens took his bubblegum.

The concepts of "canon" and "Duke Nukem" are so far apart in my mind that I can't conceive any reason why the console games would be right or wrong, because I simply don't give two fucks.

You can't deny there's a tiny bit of cannon going on in the PC Duke Nukem games. Duke Nukem 2 was 1 year after Duke Nukem 1. Duke Nukem 3D was immediately after Duke Nukem 2, and DNF was 13 years after Duke 3D. This we know for a fact (it's stated within the games themselves). What we don't know is where Manhattan Project sits (most likely not too long after Duke 3D.) And why Duke doesn't seem to age. The console ports involve time travel so can easily be seen as alternate timelines.

Other than that, there's not enough story in Duke Nukem games for any kind of cannon to even be based on. Although I'd sleep a bit better at night if Gearbox didn't use a 20 year old version of Duke in DNF.

Sure, but in Duke 1 it states the year to be 1997, while the later games does not seem to take place in 1998 (at least not 3D). The story does not really piece together all to well, which IMO makes a "reboot" kind of pointless as there is no real canon to be limited by already.

Hmmm maybe it's possible that the supposed reboot is actually trying to give Duke deeper character development...not that he needs it, but still. And I'm not saying people are stupid for thinking there is a big Duke canon. But it's stupid if they're going to try to pick it apart to try to uncover a deep one, as the "basic" canon is just Duke 1, 2, 3D happening right after 2, and DNF happening 13 years after 3D. Guess I should've paraphrased it better. Oh and he blows shit up, saves women, and fucks them. Can't get better canon than that IMO.

The only cannon Duke need be concerned with is Randys's cannon, Duke is terrified of Gearbox and the raping he going to get in the future, no belt buckle will be strong enough, those jeans are comming down and Randy's going to have his way....balls deep.
