Anyone here ever beat Duke Nukem 3D for Sega Genesis? "Or better yet, anyone here ever PLAYED Duke Nukem 3D for Genesis?"

So, has anybody ever fully beaten all levels on Duke Nukem for Sega Genesis? ( It was only released in Brazil, so most people play it on Emulators. )
That game is hard. as. fuck. The farthest I've ever gotten was the fourth level, after dying sooooooo many times. I think there are about 9 levels or so?
...The game is still better than Duke Nukem Forever, though...

I may dislike Duke Nukem Forever, but even I wouldn't go so far as to say that.

Off topic, but I think I'm the only person on the planet who has actually completely finished Duke Nukem 3D for the iPhone. (Don't judge me, I was bored).

I have, the second episode was quite a bitch...
I also tried playing it on the iPad which somehow kinda felt better...

They ruined a huge opportunity for the iPad! If they had redesigned the interface specifically for the large screen, spent a bit of time on bug fixing, and put the level music back in, it could be a great port. I've customized some perfect controls for the Max Payne port, and Marathon 1 and 2 for the iPad (which are free for anyone who is interested) have really good controls too.
And yeah the overlord in the iPhone port was by far the hardest part of the game and an absolute nightmare. I probably died more there than in the rest of the game combined

It's my sister's iPad so I'll have to see when she isn't using it and I'll have a look at the Marathon games.
I guess we can just wait for TX to eventually do something with the eDuke port to Android

If you do get marathon 1 and 2, I suggest getting the "masterchief mode" in-app purchase. It's 99 cents for each game, but it adds essential things like manual saving, health replenishing, and the ability to skip to any level, which you might think should really be there from the begininning, but in the original game, you could only save and replenish your health at specific (and rare) points in the map, so it'll save you a lot of frustration, and it's worth supporting the author if you like the game.

...this is where you lost all credibility. And I'm not even a huge DNF fan

Geez guys, I wasn't being serious when I said it was better than Duke Nukem Forever

Don't worry, Slippy_Pig, I can relate to your opinion
I have beaten Duke Nukem 3D Genesis, but only via emulator and some codes. I can easily say, not including the unbalanced enemies/guns, that gameplay gets frustrating. It's due to the repetitive nature, as well as confusing visuals.
There are indeed 9 levels and all enemies, including Overlord, have the same sounds.
The good thing about this version is that it seems to make use of many elements from the beta/planned elements. This includes the Space Suit (same messages), flame trap and some electrical danger.

I finally beat the game. It's not actually as hard as I said before once you get used to the abnormal controls.
The ending sucked. Really really sucked. Not that many surprises there, but unless they were REALLY hard pressed for memory space, I'm sure they could've done SOMETHING else other than just showing the overlord die and Duke riding back to Earth in a spaceship, cueing a THE END screen to end on.

Hey, why did this version of the game get music, but the N64 version didn't? That makes no sense!
#17 Posted 03 May 2012 - 07:16 PM
Because Mega Drive used Blu-rays. Puny N64 cartridges could not compare. Something had to give in Duke Nukem 64, and it ended up being the music.

I'd also chalk the lack of music on the N64 up to laziness. They'd have had to write new music or convert the old midis to the N64 somehow.

I guess I'm in minority here for never liking playing Duke3d with music. I remember trying to play with music but always turning it off near a club with in-game music in Red Light District. Duke3d had a good sound design anyway with lots of ambient sounds and never sounded silent even with music turned off.

Okay, the music may have been bad, and missing so many instruments, but at least it was something; N64 version is missing EVEN MORE instruments that the Sega Genesis version because it has no instruments!

At least you can waddle on over to your PC, turn on Winamp, and provide your own soundtrack while you play your N64. With the Sega Genesis, you have to listen to their garbage.
