Duke Nukem Chronology Timeline

#1

I think this best describes the timeline from Duke Nukem 1 to Duke Nukem 4(Forever).

In Duke Nukem 1, the intro states that it takes place in the year 1997.

In Duke Nukem 2, Duke says in the intro that he killed Dr.Proton one year before(which means that this game takes place in 1998).

Duke Nukem 3D takes place right after Duke 2. So that means it also is in the year 1998.

Duke Nukem Forever takes place 12 years after Duke 3D. So that means it's 2010 in DNF.

This is not official, it's just my thoughts. But it does seem spot on to me.

Wasn't there some time travel involved in the first three episodes of Duke Nukem (or Duke Nukum if you may) or am I totally off here? I think it was between episode 2 and 3 but I'm not 100 % sure.

There was time travel in Episode 3 of Duke 1. Duke went into the future to find Proton

When Duke finally killed Proton, he went back to the year 1997.

I stand corrected then. It has been too long since I played the first game and apparently I missed the part where he travels back. 'Cuse me :(

The calendars in D3D says something like 2046, though. And Duke II just says it takes place in "Neo L.A., The Future", which looks to be a lot further into the future than five years. I think they realized 1997 wasn't future enough. :( Though it seems that DNF takes place in 2010.

"DUKE WAS HERE 2017"

I will continue to argue that the game have no real continuity, as each progressive title seems to refer to the previous one as a game within its universe.

Yeah if I had to stake my life on it not knowing the order of the games chronologically, I'd say humanity was the least technologically advanced in DNF (it looks the most like our own society). That just adds to the confusion.

Also, what about Manhattan Project? Did that happen after Duke 1 or Duke 3D?

I keep trying to tell myself that Land of the Babes didnt happen, it did though didnt it? Or was that just a nightmare of epic proportions.

It says that because it is new and improved from being destroyed by Proton and his Techbots :(

In some weird way, DNF is probably a prequel

Duke is playing a videogame inspired by his adventure in DN3D and everybody says the aliens are back, so DNF is obviously a sequel.

The reason the time line is so messed up is because Duke found time and kicked its ass. So now time in Duke Nukem's Universe is all fucked up. That is also why Duke looks younger in DNF.

I hope that clears things up. :(

I agree with ReaperMan, since the timelines have always been shit, and there are so many continuity errors, and so many things that don't make sense we can just chalk it up to alien's screwing the timeline, especially in Zero Hour where it's explicitly stated that both the future and the past were changed.

Makes for a very strange timeline if it were a prequel now wouldn't it?

The way I know gearbox, if they decide to reboot Duke, they will reboot it so bad that it won't even boot up.

Yeah, there is no real "Duke canon" which is why to me it seems like such an unnecessary move to "reboot" the series. You can just do whatever and get away with it storywise anyway. :(
Though as for them being games in the universe, I've always taken them as game adaptations of his previous adventures, like the Duke Nukem movie in Duke 3D episode 3.

I always wondered how fast they set up a movie set and managed to abandon it again as the movie set shows Episode 2 which took place a day before Episode 3 (rough guess).

Maybe in the Duke reboot, Duke finally finds out that he's only a character in a video game, like in Last Action Hero.

Do you think we'll see in next Duke Nukem any of the characters who appear in the artbook of DNF? NegaDuke looks really cool and Bombshell is awesome too. Why the fuck they changed her for that idiot of Dylan? :(

You are forgetting that all calendars in dn3d says"Cucumber 2007", as in original dn3d if you can read that as with HRP . So DNF should be set in 2019, twelve years later. When duke doesn't have time to "play with himself" to DN2, i don't know if its a fiction game or is based on his (recent) adventure

And there is the Manhattan Project parallel dimension, without aliens but with Morphix and its GLOPP.

Most of the time, things like 'Duke Was Here 2017' and some 12-pixel scribbling on a calendar that is illegible cannot be taken at face value. The games were never made to be serious. Also, Manhattan Project is not a parallel dimension, there just wasn't any alien invasion. Mech Morphix is actually Dr. Proton, in my opinion. 3DR made Sunstorm remove references to Shadow Warrior in the game, and I'd be willing to bet they made them change Dr. Proton's name, because by all accounts he's essentially the same character, not to mention the fact that the only game Proton was ever in was a sidescroller.

I still think (and was somewhat covered by ex 3DR guys), the Duke we have now has that "retired" look after his previous outtings. If you look, he's slimmed down, and not quite as fast or agile ala 3D. I consider the spin off titles happening not too far away from 3D's conclusion, but many years before Forever.

So in duke begins, he should be super fast. Steroids would only slow him down.
