Former 3DR developers speak out against DNF

User is offline   Mr. Tibbs

The latest issue of PLAY magazine has a feature on DNF, featuring 3DR staff from the 3D days and DNF team. Has anyone checked it out?

Interesting tidbits include Duke 3D producer Greg Malone, who mentions that Duke fans saw through the manipulation with Forever, and it went too far in terms of vulgarity etc...

http://www.nowgamer....nipulation.html

The full feature includes what 3D Realms think of Duke Nukem Forever including why ‘Gearbox should hire some talented writers’ (kinda crazy because Triptych Games wrote it), a giant alien dildo that was censored and the inner turmoil on the team at the time.

Very interesting ... that's how I felt about the game too, hopefully the next game will bring back his badass action hero characteristics, the humor was too juvenile and forced in DNF.

Fully agreed with Mr. Malone, but I don't see how one man's opinion defines "what 3D Realms thinks".
It could be that additional ex-3DR personnel was interviewed, but the preview doesn't make that clear.

I disagree with what he says .Toning down Duke humor would've been a mistake.

If there was any true Duke humour in the game to tone down I'd agree.

Define "true Duke humor" and why do you think it was lacking in DNF?

Seeing another pop culture icon dead and making a quip (Doomguy, Luke, Indy, Snake Plissken, Terminator) is better humor than "Fun & Games With Shit!".

The game is filled with pop culture references that are equally funny on top of which you have twin blondes sucking your dick.

That's probably one way in which it crossed the line.

How did it cross the line?

The 'humor' in Duke Nukem: Forever screamed of trying too hard. The pop culture references were lame and it catered to the lowest common denominator in terms of what is funny. Basically, WoW fanboys, people who never leave their computers and immature adolescents.

Duke 3D's humor was subtle, sharp and was more focused on the dark humor, the action movie stereotypes and the fact Duke doesn't give a shit, even when faced with impossible odds. Shit, even Time to Kill and Land of The Babes had humor that made more sense in terms of what made Duke Nukem funny.

This is not Gearbox's fault, but the fault of the original developers trying way too much to stay relevant while completely forgetting that Duke Nukem's humor in the previous games was timeless and consistent while always taking a back-seat to the gameplay. It was like little sugar sprinkles on top of a delicious donut, whereas DNF was a mediocre donut with an inch thick layer of sickly sweet frosting that ruins the whole experience.

They fucked up.

It's not really funny. It's vulgar, it adds shock value, and it attracts virgin foreveralones and immature males to the game.

I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not humorous.

Duke3D relied heavily on shock value as well. In fact, Duke3D was more "shocking" back in the day than DNF is now, despite the fact that DNF obviously has more shocking content.

It's not funny in the sense that you laugh at it as if it were a joke but I certainly had a huge grin on my face during that scene. And it's not like I laughed at that one doomed space marine either.

The Doomguy was witty, but the twins are just provocative.

Well if the twins were too much for you then there are plenty of references (there's a thread for these) that are comparable to the doomguy.

Agreed
it crossed the lines too much

Duke should be a bad ass heterossexual guy that mocks ate enemies, not a over the top perverted clown.

You must be a real puritan if you think getting a blowjob from hot chicks is "over the top perverted".

Witness some of the cases we have here on this forum.

DNF was way over the top. As was said earlier, Duke should be about kicking alien ass and attitude. Having an official trailer that says, in effect, 'Buy this game so you can smear shit on the wall, its so cool' is way off line.

Its not about what I am and what I like.. and i'm not religious.
its what I think a duke game supposed to be

The sexualty in the game went too far, forced jokes are not funny.
If overused, It takes out all the seriousness of the carachter, on IMHO.

D3D had sexualty, but the game remained serious because the humor was not over the top.

If we weren't searching for dildos in a nightclub that blowjob part actually would be funny. I want a first person shooter with humor elements, not a game with porn/erotic references everywhere.

I thought the humor was good, but everything else sucked. Story was too simple, gameplay wasn't that fun, levels weren't as good as Duke 3D, the music sucked, the weapons were generic, the multiplayer felt very downgraded and the multiplayer levels sucked really bad.

I agree. I am an anarchist, and a total punk rockerfaggot. I have no issues with nudity or gratuitous language or violence or anything. However, I think the nudity was out of line because it was unnecessary, perhaps even detracting from the experience. It's a fucking video game, I'm not really interested in seeing digital breasts, which wouldn't bother me if I didn't have to sit through that lameass lap dance. I was ready to shoot shit. Ultimately the whole Strip Bar area was a bore, since the minigames were pretty shit. (I fucking love air hockey.... this made me not want to play air hockey...ever.) I also found that Duke's language wasn't varied enough. Too much usage of swearing just for the sake of it. The occasional fuck makes a bigger impact, imo. Duke3D only had one, and it was censored. For example, I think the "Fork you!" line was one of the funniest lines because it wasn't vulgar at all... it was clever. And about the references, they were all too recent. Duke3D referenced a lot of stuff that was before it's time like 2001: A Space Odyssey, 867-5309/Jenny, Indiana Jones, Star Trek and Star Trek: TNG, Star Wars, Terminator, Car 54, etc.

It tried too hard and ultimately didn't have any creativity. It felt like a Scary Movie clone. It made Duke Nukem feel like "Action Game."

Derick. You say that the story was too simple. What about all the talking that games nowadays focus too much on story, and too little on gameplay. I didn't expect a story for this game. I expected the gameplay to be fair, and humor to be awesome. I liked the gameplay and loved the humor. But did everyone forget about the music in this game? It was good. Sounds fit very well in the game too.

The story was simple too on D3D. The weapons were generic because of uninspired design. Altought I liked the m1911. About the gameplay, I enjoyed the weapon combat, punching, shooting mechanics and bosses...Everything else sucks. About MP, I nevar cared for mp on DUke and I never will. I can't find any games to join, anyway. But yes, the levels were not as good as D3D. The vegas in ruins level is the worst of the game.

I didn't enjoy any of the music except for the music that played in the Duke Burger lobby... Oh wait, that's just from Duke3D.

exactly. Shoot.

I don't know how people can say that the nightclub level was their favorite. We can't shoot **** on that **** level. When that chick apeared asking for me to find popcorn and dildos, I was like "WTF, serious?". I wonder why people moan when the media bash the game, its a total mess of bad design, boring and unininspired variety of gameplay. To be honest, I don't want fucking variety. I want to SHOOT ALIENS, that's all. No dildo, popcorn or other *****.
