Anyone beat Insane mode yet?

#31

Come on it's not THAT hard. Just zoom in and shoot as many as you can, zoom out when they are too close. Try a few times and set up your strategy of who you should shoot down first.

6 or 8 ships in pair? FUCK I DIE AT THE 3RD OR 4TH AND THERE ARE EVEN MORE?

Yeah, the last batch is pretty brutal as well as they come one after another with no break. I passed it by the skin of my teeth. You'll get it, shoot as far as you can, you'll get it down.

I'm not looking forward to the Octaking, he was a pain in the neck on Come Get Some, mainly due to the other Octos.

I started playing on Insane yesterday. The Mothership battle almost drove me nuts, took me at least 20 minutes. Funnily enough it started going better when my friend called and that kept me distracted so that I could go by feeling alone.

Damn I'm good wouldn't be quite so bad if it had movement like Duke 3D has. Eduke32 has great mouse control, and it's very easy to move Duke around maps; he's fast, manouvreable, can jump high, manouvreable. In DNF the clipping is way too restrictive and you can't move into a lot of places that you think you'd be able to move into.
This creates situations when you're trying to avoid gunfire, or you're backing away from an enemy, then suddenly you're not moving for some reason, and then you find yourself dead.

The mothership was easy, I got it on first try. The problem is the crash course. I had to slow the game's speed down :)

Well, it was tough (the Crash Course turret scene) but a bit easier than the Mothership. Took me about 15 minutes. The 4th pair (starting from the second Liztrooper dropship) always got me but once I got past that the rest was easy (and a blur). The key is that you can ignore one ship in pairs 3 & 4, at least if you manage to take down the first two pairs without much damage.

I'd rather have stopped playing altogether than live with the shame.

Hehe, it is an old machine though :) I can always retry at my real PC when I get home in the weekend :) A least with the game slowed down I managed to get all ships without ignoring any of them :P and no I couldn't hit them at the distance, for some reason the bullets only hit them when they're up close.

Finally, finished the game on Insane with Gunslinger: http://steamcommunit...ukeNukemForever

The Octaking fight seemed hopeless at first but the minion waves actually stopped sooner than I expected.

The Emperor fight was so long and repetitive that I'd have killed someone if I had died there. It was very close a couple of times but the fight is extremely simple, it just takes so long and the probability of making an error during such a monotonic performance is always there.

Took me 12 hours (as opposed to 8,5 hours on my first playthrough) thanks to the few parts that required constant repetition.

Edit: Btw, it's incredible how useless the Freezer is.

I'm up to The Shrunk Machine now. Made it through Crash Course with an incredible amount of luck. I think the Battlelord dam fight was a bit more challenging than the C.C. turret section, I dunno :/

Onward!

Got 100% achievement now after 32hours of play.

In Damn I'm Good the most difficult were the turret parts and the fucking explosive barrels going down the stairs in Blowin' The Dam. Otherwise it was a lot of fun.

I didn't have any trouble with the Queen Bitch or the Octopussy in Damn I'm Good : just throw tripmines onto Octobrains and they die in one hit in just a couple of seconds. Plus you have infinite explosive resources during both of those bossfights.

The most annoying achievement was the catfish one.

Now I'm just waiting for the DLC.

It actually helps if you let the water rise; slows down the barrels. But yeah, it was a bit annoying, took me about 4-5 tries.

Actually I'm stuck at the fucking octaking. The god damned octabrains need 2 pipebombs and then some ripper to get them out. Maybe we played a different game? Also bear in mind I'm trying to get Gunslinger achievement here, So I only have one weapon. I use the pistol occasionally for sniping.

I found the battlelord really easy, got him on second try. Just killing him from afar.

Now I have to spend most of my night trying to kill the octaking. To everyone that played it... should I use everything here? (I've got roids, beer and holoduke) or should I save it for the leech?

The Leech is super easy even on Insane so feel free to use anything you've got left against the King.

Just stay in cover and use your pistol/ripper (equally good actually) to keep the Octabrains at bay. Shoot only when they enter your line of fire, the line that allows them to shoot at you. Do note that you have to kill about two waves before you're able to get any hits on the King.

I said tripmines, not pipebombs.

Also I was also keeping the pistol on my play in Damn I'm Good.

Tripmines? Damn I didn't try that...

Funny stuff : I beat 3 waves of Octabrains , had taken 30% of health from the Octaking and I was on a rampage! I went to pick up the devastator now that the octabrains were gone to finish the king off and... THE DEVASTATOR WAS NOWERE TO BE SEEN, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! IT FRIGGIN DISSAPEARED!

Yeah, they seem to swallow tripmines and explode immediately. Too bad you can't throw them far.

I turned on Duke 3d freezer. It shoots as fast as you can click them mouse. Takes down an octobrain in seconds.

Is the Duke3d freezer considered a cheat to beat insane mode?

No... the weapon just acts differently.

There, I just beat insane mode along with the gunslinger achievement. Fucking cycloid was supossed to be easy but I kept dying when almost killing him. Shit took me 7 tries.

The game already gives you the gunslinger achievement before fighting the cycloid, but I still kept the fucking gun because it doesn't feel right if you don't finish the game with it.

I'm just passed the Octaking now which was tough, but not impossible. I did get very frustrated at the Crash Course-part too. But, did anyone have any problem with the first real fight you get after the twins got twin-napped in the casino? Especially the raged pigcops in that part were tough as hell. I was so relieved when I beat that!

I believe I used steroids or beer, can't remember. Are you talking about the part were the Pigcops and the Commander drop from the ceiling?

I just completed the game on Damn, I'm Good. :)

Yep, that's the one. I used steroids too at last part of the fight where you get around 3 raged pigcops at the same time.
This bit, the infamous Crash Course turret-bit and the Octaking are the hardest parts for me till now. I have yet to get to the last fight.

I just completed 'Damn, I'm Good', I'd have to say the Crash Course turret, Octoking and second half of the second Battlelord fight to be the most frustrating parts of the game. It got a bit hairy with the second part of Cycloid Emperor when I had to pistol whip the Enforcers to get their weapons, other than that did it on my 3rd try. I think what helped during the course of the game was the classic Duke 3d freezethrower, especially with the Octobrains (which I've grown a strong hate for as in Duke 3d).

Overall I'd have to say I enjoyed the game a noticeably bit more on Damn, I'm Good than on Come Get Some.

I think I'm going to do a play through on 200% speed on Piece of Cake, just for the hell of it.

DNF was pretty damn fun...
Playing Insane mode is even more difficult when playing it on a console rather than PC. I kinda wish I had forked in for a keyboard/mouse instead of the use of the controller. FPS games always seem a tad awkward to me when playing on a console, its as if my reaction time and movements are slower too.

Well, I'm at the last fight now. Already died quite a bit... But I'll get it!

Beat it. I skipped Come Get Some and went right to Damn I'm good. Knock two birds out with one stone. It was HARD AS FUCK...esp Octaking, te turret fights, and the second Battleloard encounter. As for the Octaking, I just keep the shrinker I found in the secret room to shrink the octos he spawns out, then blow them up with pipebombs. Works like a charm. The final battle isn't so hard, just takes alot longer than it should. The unarmed pigcops are by far the most annoying enemies in that mode. One hit and you're fuckin done for :).
