Flying Techbot, here for the first time,
I know that most players here, when they think of Duke Nukem, they mainly think of Duke Nukem 3D and the numerous spin-off titles and mods developed during the interval of DNF's development, as well as DNF itself. However, I still remember Duke when he started off in the G-Rated platform series from the early '90s, before Duke became a really cocky and dirty homage to Bruce Campbell. His first enemies consisted of Dr. Proton, the German cyborg who destroyed most of Los Angeles in the modern near future with his army of techbots, and the Rigelatins, the gross extraterrestrial predecessors to the pig/reptile aliens of Duke 3D (In fact, I think Rigelatins were what made gross aliens primary antagonists for the following Duke games). Dr. Proton, who fight mainly on a deadly hover chair (an ode to Robotnik, I think), was thought to be dead at the end of the first game (after kicking him out of Shrapnel City, defeating him on a Moon base, and finally exploding him in a Jetsons-like future). He was supposed to return in Duke Nukem Forever (as well as other characters who were promised in the first announcements), but now I'm beginning to worry that he didn't make it into the game.
I don't care about the other complaints about the graphics (which still look good to me, even for an Unreal Engine 2 based game), or for the outdated gameplay or pop culture references. I do find it disappointing that the AI is not found to be perfect, especially after 3D Realms must have found the AI from Half-Life and Unreal to be inspiring during the development process. However, despite the supposedly imperfect job GearBox made in completing the game, does Dr. Proton at least return as the main antagonist for the game, or did the developers just decide to repeat the bosses and aliens from Duke 3D without the content they promised?
In the original story proposal, Doctor Proton was supposed to contact aliens from all parts of the universe to get back at Duke. It would have been really cool if one of the grotesque Rigelatins from Duke 2 had returned as a boss, but I guess the developers were mainly concerned with the characters of Duke 3D to backtrack to Duke's mainly campy platform past.
