#1

I've never seen this before until now, but it's badass.

First seen this on the gearbox forums.
I think it's a rare edition that can be found in a german old school gaming museum from what I understand.

For some reason Duke looks german in that cover. I prefer the original box art though.

The perspective is terrible. Look at the tracers whizzing past Duke and how short the trails are from the robot. Also, Duke's purple clothing. Still looks cool though.

Duke 1 never had official box art to my knowledge.

You are correct... the box is third party. I don't think I have that one.
It could easily be shareware... for which boxes from several distributors exist.
I think Blake Stone or Planet Strike was the very first (chronologically) officially boxed Apogee game.

Not being a nit-picker as I don't care actually. I enjoy box art official or not. ;)

Any boxart you find for Duke 1 (and sometimes Duke 2) is bootlegged. Still really cool, and worth a good chunk of change none the less.

Yep. That's definitely early 90s boxart. Reminds me of a Youngblood comic book cover with all the Liefeld-esque proportions, the big guns, and the perma-squint on Duke's face.

Are the manned robots in the background taken from the film 'robocop'?? and did they feature in the game itself or are they purely drawings

They may have been inspired by Robocop, and yes, they do make an appearance in the game. They use their legs like a frog and bounce around while shooting their cannons at you... Bastards. Posted Image

I just realized that a similar robot used in Duke Nukem Mobile "Bikini Project" also. It is a boss on level 7 on the most stripped down version of that game ever made... for the Nokia 6000 series phones.
The one in this game uses a flame thrower actually though.

Maybe.

Foot Techbot

This clever techbot is quite a dastardly foe. It'll leap and bounce across chasms to run into and shoot you. It's a little intimidated by your pink shirt, so catch it when it's off guard.

I adore this cover. It just oozes with 90's budget game cover design - gradient as a background, strange mix of poor hand-drawn, off model characters and early 3d stuff... just lovely.

I've seen it before, years ago, and still have it on my hard drive but in terrible quality from ebay or something. Never been able too see the details before. It's really cool, wish they still made cover art like this. :)

You mean if the same distributor that made the above box had done it?

There is a cover art for Duke II.

It was made by Formgen.

He looks like Reb Brown in that picture. Ironically, another 70s/80s action film star (granted, they were B films). Oh yeah, he was also Captain America.

Minus the facial lines, of course.

The fact duke is shooting in a totally opposite direction doesn't make much sense anyway, so you'd get over the tracer fire!

Its like 2 different angles thrown together in my eyes.

Duke looks like a generic meathead like he was initially. The box is cool , I haven seenit before.

Dunno about you, but the guy on the DN1 packshot somehow reminded me of this fellow here. Main differences: Gun instead of sword, mean looks vs. douche. :(

Looks like an early Rob Liefeld, possibly a retouched Cable.
