Can they really cross normal fences?
Yes... they can jump a 7 ft (2.1meter) high fence standing still... like no running start. They are more afraid of an electric fence however and generally won't come back after a couple of shocks. Electric fences are inexpensive, easy to take down and put up and can be modified substantially with ease.

Don't you see it, it's the demo that's holding up the game. They'd like a demo out a certain amount of time before the game. But obviously, the demo isn't ready = game delay.
One theory I have had is related to your (VinsaneOne) post...
I wonder if MAYBE GearBox thought they might be headed for trouble not having a demo out. And MAYBE might have finished the game and met the date... but lawyers would LOVE the act of not delivering for the First Access Club. If they shipped the game before the Demo, the first Access Club could possibly be considered a scam.
Even if Gearbox honestly did not intend for it to be a money grab, if lawyers could make it look that way in court, GearBox could still be sued on behalf of everyone who bought a game based on that incentive. A LOT of Borderlands Game of the Year editions have been sold since the First Access Club started. Any one of those sales could be claimed as having First Access Club as the motivations and therefore you didn't get your product... class action time. Delaying the game COULD have been avoiding this scenario.
Just my conspiracy theory ramblings... but might be possible.
