Well I think there are 2 reasons. The first one is that the pace of the movies, especially the first one, is incredibly slow. I mean they spend all this time showing you the Enterprise from different angles, and I'm not sure whether or not it was an impressive sight back in the day, but with modern CGI spending 5+ minutes on a relatively dull ship exterior is simply a drag.

The second reason is that story writing has "improved" a lot since then. I mean in those movies there isn't a huge amount of stuff going on. Another point here is that a lot of the situations in the movies have been done again at a later date in shows/movies that I've watched, and done a bit better for various reasons. So when you see these equivalents then go to the original, it's just not anything "new" or special. It's the same as watching old comedy shows for the first time, they just don't have anything you haven't seen before, even if in reality they did everything first.

Back in 79 TMP was sorta visually impressive, sorta. It was for Trek fans who were used to the 60s TV show, really seeing the scale and such, and to this day I still love the effects, but yes. TMP is notoriously slow. It's often been called "Star Trek :The Slow Motion Picture" or "Star Trek :The No Motion Picture"

But Wrath of Khan? While I agree that in terms of plotting "not a lot" is going on, it has many layers and themes. Revenge, age, sacrifice, friendship. It's classical story telling at it's finest, and frankly as far as writing is concerned nothing has changed since 1982. Editing? Yeah, nowadays the MTV hyper-cutting has taken over from the times of using slow pace to build tension. Wrath of Khan is a very low budgeted film that does a lot with what it had. It had a fraction of the budget TMP had.

However, the reason I referenced TREK 2 was that one specific line. It has been my experience there are some situations in relationships that you cannot come out of "winning" however you want to "technically" define that. You'll be wrong, no matter what you say, simply because you both feel differently. So you have to deal with those situations as patiently and as best as you can. Don't be a push over, either. Just.... Just be you. If it's going to work, you guys will make it work. It's about give and take, and trying. If you're always giving, then that blows. If she's always giving, then that blows too. There's gotta be, and there should be, compromise on both sides based on whatever situations are. If you guys are happy, then there's no problem. I guess, "cross that bridge when you come to it." Nobody can honestly predict what will cause problems and what won't between certain people.

Wouldn't that make her more suspicious :P

Just be normal is all I can say which probably easier said than done. If there is something that you both don't agree on then that is normal too but if you two don't argue then there is something up.

Yeah I can be normal and myself. Thank you Lunick; the king of relationship advice Posted Image

@Commando Nukem, I'll have to watch Wrath of Khan again. It was alright, but that was the first Original Series movie I saw, and was expecting quite a lot more out of it because of the hype of everyone saying it's the best movie and everything. I'll probably like it more the second time around.

I wonder what you would say about 2001: A Space Odyssey... Although, it is still visually impressive and hasn't aged a bit.

Most people consider it the best of the original Trek 10 because it's the most focused, and generally the best written of the lot. The death of Spock pretty much makes every long time fan choke up. Nothing is done with excess, etc... Most successful Trek movie though is still Trek 4.

I sat through most of that I think.. it was a while ago. Big chunks of it were indeed boring though, and it didn't help that parts didn't make much sense, like the end. I love the premise though.

I've only seen the first few episodes of season 1, which I like and I'd love to see the rest. I found the death of Spoke quite hammy. Obviously the fact that I knew Spock doesn't die/comes back to life took away from the whole thing, but it was just way too cliche for me to have any effectiveness.

He's right, though. Domestic cats should be exterminated.

Cats are awesome. What this activist doesn't understand is that cats are simply better than birds.

They should exterminate dogs instead. Those loud-mouthed, filthy, submissive creatures...

Dogs will shit on your carpet and drool on your clothes and destroy your furniture and bite your neighbor's kids, but at least they love you. Cats can go rot in hell.

Yeah that's what I meant when I said they're submissive. Who wants to be loved anyway? The human-cat relationship is based on mutual respect.

Loved this part:

Quote

Before you say it, even well-fed cats kill. The fact is that cats kill on instinct, not because they need to eat, it is one of their most pleasurable activities. In one study, six cats were presented with a live small rat while eating their preferred food. All six cats stopped eating the food, killed the rat, and then resumed eating the food

Cats are awesome.

Also, figured I may as well tag this on:

All this is going to lead to is micro chipping of cats and earning the SPCA some more coin.

Cats, dogs, rats, mice etc. were all introduced into New Zealand by the white English man. Before these were introduced the birds of New Zealand had no natural predictors hence why a majority of them were flightless.
But yes this guy is a idiot anyhow. Not sure how its sparking so much debate when there is more important shit on. (Keeps taking the main headlines and is already 3 days old)

My cat loves me... he'll climb up on me and purr for 20 minutes at a time sometimes. I've had him since he was a kitten and he's very loyal. Very fluffy, too (he's a Maine Coon).

First, my DNF massage balls arrived. They look like this (not my pic, but it's the same thing):

I'm now running Windows 8. I don't mind the Start Menu but I do wish Steam would get behind the new system. They can have the "big picture" thing and make an official app for Windows 8. It would solve so much....I mean, I fully intend to install Steam on a future purchased Microsoft Surface Pro so I can play Civ 5 anywhere anytime with touch capabilities...but I'd like to not have to go through the desktop just to do that.

I have Windows 8 as well (came with my laptop), but I hate the half-assed "metro" interface and never use it. Got "StartIsBack" on the first day and haven't looked back, heh.
