Maybe those are burned out tubes. The small one looks like a common rectifier tube and the other one a horizontal amplifier tube from a TV. Niether one worth more than 2-3 dollars if good. Being an antique radio fixer / collector I like it. I could have done a much better job that that one but its clever.

For those who don't know, I'm attempting to clone the AdLib.

I don't like the fingers, the program I used doesn't have any footprint for them so I had to use SMD capacitor footprints requiring some work after etching as the software won't let me increase the footprint height for some reason (it crashes).

I bought some YM chips and those DACs some months ago in order to do a couple

One motivator is to have true 8bit ISA cards that could be plugged in to old systems such as the Schneider euroPC (XT clone).

Although your design seems to have more stuff such as the IRQ jumpers which I don't remember seeing in his.

I used his schematic as a reference further into designing it for things I couldn't figure out by looking at pictures of the AdLib so what I arrived at is halfway between the two. I made my silkscreen have the same numbering scheme so I could just copy his parts list.

I also ditched the jack because my reasons for wanting it are that I plan to have a sound card with poor AdLib compatibility (but OK for SoundBlaster PCM) so I'll just hook it into the Aux-In header on that. Contemplating moving the header to the upper right edge of the board and adding a simple circuit with an In header to mix another signal in, just in case I ever need the Aux-In for something else later - I could always add a jumper to bypass that and only install the components for it if they were needed. I think I could fit it on the board if I rerouted a few traces.

I also did away with the potentiometer. I left a header for it as I don't yet know what to do about it, chances are a resistor will be soldered into that once I find out which value gets me the right volume.

Also contemplating adding holes for a capacitor wired to the LM386 as I might want to dick around with the gain. My board is larger than Sergey's and therefore costs £11 more to have etched... If it works it will cost much less than going with a real AdLib though. Some of the size is because I like my traces loose, sharp 90 degree turns are never a good thing... My ground plane sucks though as it relies on a bunch of narrow traces. I was quite happy that I managed to eliminate two lots of holes marked "JM8A+B" and "JM9A+B" though as these were for bodge wires I managed to eliminate. The top left also had about ten more via's early on.

Managed to get rid of several vias, moved CON1 (Line Out), added a header for capacitors in case I ever have to adjust amp gain (either screw terminals or a daughterboard will connect here) and I sketched a shitty daughter-board...

...which would allow adding a jack and potentiometer to the card, the potentiometer would bolt to the ISA bracket which would mean I could use a blank one with nothing more than two holes drilled in... Could get one of those bolt-type jacks too for extra reinforcement, though I haven't seen them with that pin layout so I may have to adjust the board layout for it if I ever do that... I think RS sell them with that footprint but I'd have to check... Probably never have to get that little board etched though.

Otherwise, screw terminals will be put into CON2 (Volume Control) so I can change out resistors if necessary.

Costs about £45 to have etched by a UK company.

I used to think that the complexity of a society might be related to the complexity of its system of laws, rules, and such... in the last decade, my view has reversed. I believe it the opposite. I say this because new laws seem to be created to compensate for lack of judgement. Also, if the "rules" are defined, then they can be worked around... being able to be worked around shows a lack of judgement during application of laws.

I won't argue what right and wrong are, but no matter what view is chosen, it must be agreed on by the majority or it won't work... currently, it would seem that the majority agrees on a proverbial Highway to Hell... at least by my definition. (not that I am endorsing the concept of hell)

I don't care for how you interact here. Agreeing with someone and having parallel beliefs or matching views on a given subject are different. One suggests a relationship or binding of sorts, based on acknowledged related views... the other is without connection. "Yep, the sky is blue... we agree, I still don't care for how you interact."


Nothing personal really, but even if we shared an identical view, because of the way you interact, I consider us incompatible. Some people confuse "characteristic" and "flaw". By flaw, I just mean something personal that I believe should be improved upon, or "a problem to be fixed" maybe. What is decided a flaw, is almost completely individually based. Was Adolph Hitler flawed, or was he just "different"? I can only define this for myself, and I seek others with similar mannerisms of "interaction", with greater importance to what we are actually interacting about. The idea being, if you were to weigh your heart vs a feather... you'd want the feather to be heavier.

It is ok if you don't care for how I sign almost every post... I thought you would want to know that. Besides, it is for me, not others... a necessary habit pre-internet, and later, in the early 2000's, it was required on a system I used for a few years relative to my work. (I say almost every post because I yield to Commander Cody because he likes to be grumpy, and I like to reduce his material to gripe about... he used to complain about my habit of signing posts often)
