I stick to dogs, but then even 12 years is too short for an animal that truly is your buddy. I used to have a cool little hamster he was white with blood red eyes, called Ghost, pretty clever, unfortunately I stood on him when when I didn't know he was out of his cage and hiding under a rug. Was horrible I just heard the crunch, looked under the rug and there he was a crumpled shaking mess, I drowned him in a cereal bowl straight away to end the suffering. I was pretty pissed about the whole thing and when I told my "friends" the dickheads thought it was funny because it was "just a hamster". They are not my friends anymore.

My cat Cosmo will be 11 this year. My mom's cat will be 14.

I have an orange cat called Mouse, he's 14 all busted up from having his back legs crushed by something when he was a kitten, we paid 600 pounds getting pins in his legs and other operations.

He has a bandy walk but he's still going strong, gets on great with my German Shepard too.

My german shepherd is sometimes brute with cats, putting his giant paws on top of them and stuff they don't like.

Cosmo hates dogs. He's only seen a dog once and he started hissing as soon as he saw the dog. Sadie (mom's cat) on the other hand, doesn't seem to mind them.

If they are raised together they are nearly always ok, the cat was bigger than the dog at one point, now the dog is a giant.

This reminds me of a story from when I was a teenager. My parents were dog sitting a friends Husky. My sisters friend, a neighbour, brought over a little barn kitten just born, I don't know why. Well, when that Husky saw that cat it ripped it right out of the little girls arms and killed the thing. 15 years have passed and I will never forget the look of terror on her face.

my black lab (3) loves cats; we've had a cat since it was a puppy.
our Lab also gets along with other dogs; it has the neighbor's dogs it plays with and my parent's dog to play with when they visit.
our cat (12) likes our Lab and tolerates other friendly dogs
we've only had one cat at a time; our current cat hates other cats (even tiny kittens)
my parent's chocolate lab gets along with other dogs (our dog, their neighbor's dog), but gets almost no exposure to cats, so it hates cats
