Just finished the first part of our first adventure in a Star Wars dice RPG. I decided on playing as a Wookie (we needed a heavy). Yeah, I finished an incapacitated enemy with a melee...just because I can.

Sure. It was happy...when they gave up and ran away. The GM was like "Yeah, he's dead." after I rolled my damage.

there are some gaps, but according to NASA Ames research the materials needed were quite common during the formation of the solar system. Meteorites and cometary bodies are loaded with them.

Scientists have been able to take the compounds (carbon, amino acids, etc.), "cook" them in a lab, and produce organic gunk.

Open questions still pervade. The origins of the material. It requires UV radiation to create them which would have been absent in a solar nebula cloud of dust. How to get from simple amino acids, nucleobases, and amphiphiles to strands of RNA or DNA and building block proteins.

its just how does it "think" does anything really think, or is it all just chemical reactions, could humans form of thinking and emotions are just an evolved form of chemical reactions that can go as far as using visual stimulus to produce results

We don't know enough yet. More research is needed.
we know the solar system is full of the necessary material to make a living organism.
we don't know how those compounds got there in the first place.
we don't know how or why they combined in the specific way it takes to make it a living organism
we don't know for sure how or why single celled organisms made the leap to multi-celled organisms (survival techniques and environment?)
how we got from point 0 to where we are today is still speculation

when/if we find organisms on another body in our solar system and are able to examine it for things like cell wall structure, compound composition, presence of RNA/DNA, reproduction and digestive systems, evolution environment - we'll have a better understanding of what it takes to get life started.

are we just a sack of chemicals and electrical currents? technically yes.
even "dumb" animals can think and have memory. if they didn't you'd have to retrain a dog every day.

personally think these organism could be spawned from a very specialized and rare space water made under very specific conditions we can;t conceive yet, it seem to be the source of all life and the organisms that come in contact from said water to planets similar to earth are where it thrives and evolves, i think the only type of life that can really exist like ours is in worlds similar to ours, just the right amount of water and heat.

i don't know about rare special space water, but very specific conditions are most likely a requirement.

if you thought about all the conditions and events that needed to happen to make life possible on this planet and to get to a species as intelligent as us you might come to the conclusion that "smart" aliens are going to be very rare indeed.

planet position and composition
- not too close, not too far from its sun
- not too big, not too small
- rocky with an iron/nickle core to produce a magnetic field
-plate tectonics and vulcanism

Collision between earth and theia
-created a moon of the exact right size needed to stabilize the earth's tilt and rotation
-happened at the exact angle that didn't destroy the planets, or only glanced and blew off an inadequate amount of material to make a large moon
-increased the earth's size and iron core for a strong magnetic field and the planet wouldn't cool off quickly losing its magnetic field
- the moon is the right size and distance to stabilize the earth's tides and weather paterns

Late heavy bombardment
-brought water and other compounds to earth that are necessary for life to exist

The numerous mass extinction events and climate changes that had to occur to make way for our ancestors to be the dominant species
-there were at least 5 major events and a dozen minor events. if only one of these never happened we wouldn't be here

these are just a few of the major examples. there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of more "requirements" that had to be perfectly in place for us to even be here

yup and i think that's the only chance and kind of life, that possible i suspect a lot of life on other planets would be similar given the same conditions, give or take 1 or 2 less or more mass extinction events, dinosaur planets?

just everything has conditons, black holes, supernovas, how stars form etc so why not the same for life

List is arranged slowest at top getting faster towards the bottom. Keep in mind the P55C Clone below me has a Rive128AGP. The one above me is at 266MHz with a Matrox Mystique 220 PCI on an i430HX-based motherboard. The last note on my machine is that 90% of it was out of skips or bought with cigarettes a decade ago.
