Pretty amazing what people can do with 'ancient' game engine technology: [url="http://forums.massassi.net/vb3/showthread.php?60565-Death-Star-%28JA%29" ]http:

Is that the Sith Engine?

This fascinated me, apparently they have discovered a planet that has no star, I remember years back questioning whether such a thing might exist, even wrote a story about one in school I think, the idea always intrigued me.

This seems to be an article on the planet they found; http://www.ifa.hawai...s/LonelyPlanet/

Turns out such a thing does exist.

Going from definition of a planet in Solar System, one thing for sure - planet has to orbit its star.

I've seen a few people write that and I tend to agree... But what word do you propose?

Planetes is the Greek word Planet is derrived from, it means "Wandering Star" so is planet not more apt for this one than any other planet yet known?

It's a round object in space. What word was it derived from shouldn't matter much on it precise definition. Almost anything is a 'star' in night's sky.

When your brother phones you 7 times in the last 5 minutes, you know he must be really dying to talk to you. Turns out his phone was acting up and he couldn't get a dial tone.

well it's a matter of sense that gas giants have formed on their own if you consider that brown dwarfs (lacking sufficient size and density to ignite hydrogen fusion) are basically very large gas giants.
the difference between the two being brown dwarfs are anything with more than 13 Jupiter mass (since only young ones emit x-rays, and glow in the infrared spectra)

a brown dwarf is a "failed star", so this thing is a "failed brown dwarf"

but i'll still call it a planet

Think positive, what Mr. Crumpy really means is that those images deserve their very own thread.;)
