HRP White Squares

I know, I posted this earlier, but I just realized I probably posted it in the wrong area, hense why Im re-posting it here, since it seems like it would be a better and more appropriate spot for it, so go ahead and ignore/delete the other one, my apologies, and thanks. With that said, onto the issue again;

Well, I had it working at one point, but now, its not working correctly, I guess you can say its either missing textures, or at least it looks like it. This ONLY occurs when I run the HRP. To get a rough idea, picture the game loading up like normally, then when the title comes up its all a white rectangles over top the background page, then the menus are all white rectangles, and bits and pieces of the game are white rectangles, or just white versions of their shape. So, any ideas what I can do?

According to other posts on this, the new ATI drivers don't play nice with HRP. Advice has been to roll back your driver.

Ahhh, I dunno if I wanna do that, I went through hell just to update them =/. Is there any other possible way?
Edit:
Err, scratch that. Even if I wanted to roll back, I couldn't... My driver doesn't have the option too.

Because you have provided VERY little information on your system set up and didn't bother to read THIS to know that you should have attached your eduke32.log then I can only asume you are running an ATI system with the latest drivers.
As it has been said you need to back date your ATI driver to version 10.5.

Get a Nvidia card.

Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Uninstall all ATI software and drivers, restart, install driver 10.5.
How hard is that?

Thats a pretty messed up assumption to come to that conclusion.. I really wish I could tell what video cards people are using by them not giving any to very little information and by them apparently not reading something... I'll tell ya, your right though. But don't go gettin cocky or arrogant about it. I'll tell you why I didnt provide such info, and I'll tell ya why I never read THAT... When I signed up I did a search.. I probably searched the wrong thing, as I had no idea what exactly I'm looking for. Its why I made the thread, so I could find out exactly what Im looking for. And from what I can tell so far, thats exactly what happened. As far as not giving so much information. I figured it would have been asked for within the thread, since it hasnt been yet, I haven't bothered.

Get a Nvidia card.

1.I hate nividia ....
2. Give me the money for a new card? I don't have enough to do so.

Well...Thats not hard.. However, that is incorrect. When uninstalling drivers, your should remove them from the Device Manager, found within the Control Panel, not remove them through Programs and Featers/Add or Remove Programs. Yes, Im running on vista. I just need to go digging for an older version and go through all that crap again.

Edit: Well, I put the driver back down to 10.5. Works great. So thanks.

That's your opinion, but we like them because they work

All the people who turn up here and complain of having strange display issues always have an ATI card. And they all say that ATI are the best. And all the people with Nvidia cards who don't have to spend a large chunk of their lives trolling around forums finding out why stuff dosen't work on their cards just shake their heads.

Of all things, you had to put your two cents in for that? Your right, it is my opinion, but, its also a fact in my case. I hate it for my own personal reasons. But anyways, I already said thanks, and the problem is solved... So....Thread end.

It's perfectly possible to uninstall your ATI drivers and software with the uninstall utility. No reason to go to the device manager.

Also, don't worry, Tea Monster. I'm an ATI user and I hate ATI. Not everyone is like that. I've been longing for a good nVidia card for once for ages.

If you have polymer turned on, the ATI will crash you.

Until a fix happens, I just use my girlfriend's WoW computer to test lighting stuff in the map I'm building, since it has an nVidia. Some may not have that option, though :D

So i just keep polymer turned off... hmm, my game also crashes if i try using autoload & dukeplus on eternity & other episodes so i need to use somekind of DUKEPLUS_RESOURCES :/ any idea why this happeens ?

Will you guys release a fix or something for us ATI users?
As I really do not see the point in playing without polymer....

On top of that I will certainly NOT roll back my drivers for just one game, and even if I did the game would crash on me on a regular basis as has been said before.

"You guys" essentially means plagman who is an NVIDIA employee in real life. I don't think he'll work his ass off for this issue since it appears to me that it's up to ATI to fix their drivers.
Playing with normal HRP or Polymer HRP in polymost mode is still great fun.
You might try a somewhat older [Polymer-] build:
http://dukeworld.duke4.net/eduke32/synthes...100425-1623.zip
(Which is the version I currently prefer.)
0

#16

Oh, didn't know he works for nVidia.
It's pretty obvious that he won't be working on an ATI fix then. :D

I might try that older version, thanks.

-Edit: Nope, same problem. What I think is strange is the fact that the Polymer-Renderer only works (if you can call the missing text "working") if I set "Custom game content directory" to "none" and check the "enable autoload folder" function.
On top of that I noticed when playing a level that the "Laser Pistol" was using the Polymer model, whilst everything else was just a texture.
Any ideas why that did happen? oO

The High Resolution Pack is not loaded. The laser pistol model is part of DukePlus.

Try a clean install:

So the problem to the missing text should be something else, right?

I did not check the "Polymere" option in the launcher but I still get no test... =/
So the problem to the missing text should be something else, right?

Apparently the driver problem is related to eduke32 as a whole, not only the polymer renderer.
So the only options left are:
- Retry svn1623 with your current installation (not much hope I guess)
- Roll back ATI driver (I know you won't)
- Wait for a fixed ATI driver or a fixed eduke32 version

Bad news, sorry.

Hm, too bad. =/
Thanks anyway. =)

-Edit: What is that "svn" thing you talked about?

The number '1623' in 'eduke32_win32_20100425-1623.zip' implies the version number of the sources used build the executable.
Subversion aka SVN is a version control software. Your first step into nerdiness might be checking out these threads...:

Here's a new spin on this tale :)

I'm getting white squares in Mapster after going back to 10.8. Is there a way to mess with the texture filtering via the console?

Try changing the number in the mapster32.cfg for this line.

gltexfiltermode = 2 (mine is 2 which I think is trilinear)

This thread is so funny with all the ATI-bashers. Fact is that I had two fast Nvidea cards that were not overclocked. Both died on me within warranty period. Warranty stuff was nightmare business as usual. I switched to ATI and never looked back.

I'm playing lots of games and I have never, ever encountered a problem like described here.
But it's true, we get white squares in Duke menu's with some of the latest builds of eDuke and we have crashes when putting Polymer on on the working eDuke versions.

I hope a fix will be found in the future...

Knowing that Plagman works for nvidia makes sense to me because there are problems with eDuke32 with ATI even on other platforms. There's not as many or the same problems like we don't get any white squares or crashing but there are problems. Like for example in OS X with an ATI card and eDuke32 the HRP and everything works just fine. However the ambient lighting seems to be reversed so when you get close to things it gets darker rather than how it works in Windows with an nvidia card.

Also there seems to be a memory leak which causes sectors that you aren't in to stop drawing after a certain amount of time.... which seems to increase when you add more RAM leading me to believe that it's some kind of memory leak. Since it takes longer for it to happen with more system RAM installed. This has been happening for several revisions of the OS and its drivers going back to when Polymer was first written.... and it doesn't happen in any other game or Polymost so to me it seems like it's a Polymer issue.... and it's not just with my computer because I noticed the guy who compiles the OS X versions of eDuke32 has the same problem on his computer with the same video card (you can read about it in the discussion area at that page).

Some people can't change their video cards. So just "get nvidia" isn't the answer. To be perfectly honest nvidia works better for some things and ATI works better for other things..... and this is especially true in other platforms.

Due to eDuke32's cross platform nature I hope these issues get sorted out sooner or later because if it doesn't work on both popular brands of video card on windows very well how's it going to work out on Linux or Mac?

I'd just like to point out that I don't make the code optimized for NVIDIA and/or buggy on ATI on purpose or anything like that. I try to produce 100% spec-conformant code and that sometimes exposes driver-specific bugs. I just don't have the proper card/driver combo to reproduce and fix most of them. Some users here had pretty specific problems with their ATI X1X00 cards under Polymer and I actually went out of my way to get the same kind of card, figure out the two bugs inside the ATI driver, work around them in Polymer (see the r_pr_ati* cvars) and report the bugs directly to the ATI driver developers. I'm not trying to prevent anyone from using EDuke32 here, but dealing with something like that requires a lot of time. For the record, 100% of the driver issues I've had to deal with have been ATI issues so far (some of them Mac specific).

What does that have to do with NVIDIA? Oh, wait, I know the answer--absolutely nothing, because you were dealing with the warranty department of whichever card manufacturer you bought from, not with NVIDIA. Most of those manufacturers make ATI cards too.
