[CONFIRMED] - Rumor(?): Borderlands Studio Reviving Duke Nukem Forever

The rumor has been confirmed and Duke Nukem Forever is indeed in development at Gearbox Software.

There may be hope yet for the ludicrously long-in-the-making Duke Nukem Forever. Sources claiming to have knowledge of the situation tell Kotaku that Duke Nukem Forever development continues at a new home, Borderlands developer Gearbox Software.

The studio responsible for Brothers In Arms, Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines is said to have picked up Duke Nukem Forever development where former studio 3D Realms left off, perhaps Duke’s best bet for eventual completion.

Duke Nukem Forever, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous, is now in the hands of Gearbox and is planned to be released under the studio’s name. Gearbox was outed as the developer of the apparently scrapped Duke Nukem spin-off Duke Begins earlier this year.

Take-Two Interactive still maintains publishing rights to the title, which the company confirmed to Kotaku tonight. (A company spokesperson declined to comment about the status of the Duke Nukem Forever project and whether it is in the works at Gearbox.)

One source indicated that a playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever will be available later this year.

The development of Duke Nukem Forever has been in limbo since 3D Realms’ demise in 2009. Publisher Take-Two later sued 3D Realms for its failure to deliver Duke Nukem Forever in a reasonable time frame. The two parties settled their differences in May of 2010 under unspecified terms.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford declined to comment to Kotaku on the matter, indicating that he may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

3D Realms founder George Broussard, the man infamously in charge of Duke Nukem Forever, did not respond to requests for comment.

Given the nature of Duke Nukem Forever’s long and storied history, we’re filing this under rumour for now, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on PAX-related developments for further details.

Why this rumor could be true:
- Jon St. John attending PAX
- Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle
- Anything can happen in a week or two - GeorgeB (if not 3dwizzard bullshitting)
- Jon St. John removing certain Twitter posts

Before you posted, I was going to humorously suggest that the 'source' was Jobi Wan phoning the Kotaku offices.

Kotaku has their own reliable sources.

Seems like even if the source is not reliable it could be true. Seems to me like this was the most likely outcome pretty much since we learned that they were working on Duke Nukem Begins. It just makes sense.

kaiser, don't be an ass. When a forum member posts a rumor without some source of the rumor, more people can be skeptical. However, that is different then when a gaming news site presents a rumor. They aren't biased and also have a credibility thing to keep up. They also are more likely to actually have real sources (unlike fanboys).

That said, this is an interesting development. Of course, it is still a rumor.

this doesn't mean the gaming websites doesn't also share the same sources as me and others do. Maybe the websites just got more info from those sources when me and others got! B)

This doesn't mean those gaming websites can't have another source than me and others....

got that?! :D

anyway....stay cautiously optimistic. ::)

This rumor has legs. Pitchford didn't deny it and that's huge.

Thank you Mr. Green!

This might be Duke Begins instead, but I don't think so.

Either way, good news everyone!

The rumor is true, I have known this since about a week or so after George told me over mail and he has told others too. He asked to keep this private for one more week and so I did.
This is 100% true, I can even provide screenshots of the email if one wants to see it.
The project has been sent to gearbox since may and since 3drealms laid out the team, the project has continued in a few departments behind closed doors.
The mapping was already done for the most part so the bad thing is that gearbox is just putting the plug on the work already done and they are not doing too much.
They are more than likely betatesting and finishing the remaining bits. Lots of people will jump with joy that the cool gearbox studio is taking dnf and finishing it but the reality is that the game was already 90% finished bu 3dr and the work that gearbox is doing on it won't even get noticed on the most part.
At least gearbox might be good for debugging the game properly...
George has hinted in a email to me about gearbox having something to do with dnf back when I was desperately trying to leak that fake gearbox intro video, back when I made that topic here where everybody hated me for trying to exercise freespeech on this forum and I couldn't because the leaks were not allowed to be shared here.
http://forums.duke4....?showtopic=1974 This was the topic in question!

Gearbox is pretty famous, I don't think they need trick like this to make people noticing their other games.

Plus, if the rumor ends up being a fake, I would be pretty pissed against them considering he said to wait for PAX.

Then by all means sorry for saying this but you would be stupid if you would be pretty pissed at them for asking you to wait for pax.
1. He didn't ask YOU or us the fanbase to wait till PAX
2. He didn't imply that there's something there
3. He said he will clarify things about dnf then
To clarify something doesn't mean that he will tell you that they are working on the game.
Clarification means that he will tell everybody some things about the relation of gearbox and dnf which for all you know could be 0 but as I said above in this case it just so happens to be true and I know this for fact.
I was wondering why was I asked to keep this silent for at least one more week. I expected some news this week and so they happened.

Also, some 3dr staff members are working in Gearbox now.
