Host DNR as you host any other duke site: MSDN, TAW, etc. And give to somebody else the burden of keeping it up to date. My candidates are Forge and MRCK, they would manage it well together i bet. I´m sure Kim nor Fernando would mind because they didnt even appear once in a year.

I think he should take advantage of DN-Rs collapse to expand this site's repertoire. There's already a map download page available, but making it possible to add new maps and reviews would increase its popularity. Either that or put more emphasis MSDN being the place to go when you're interested in getting maps.
Now that Tx has a little more to work with besides the old Dukeworld theme, he probably has something planned. We'll just have to wait and see.

There is one main problem with this. And there is problem is clearly shown here

I understand that TECHNICALLY SPEAKING mapping is modding without changing the core game, but usermaps have always been the one thing keeping the Duke3D community alive and keeping people interested into the game, not the one or two mods and TCs that come out every 3 years and buggy shiny tools like bloom and polymer that have nothing to do with what Duke3D is about. Without usermapsall that's left are a handful of modders who all together release one thing per year and another handful of "modders" that start threads like "LOOK IM MAEKING A MOD TOO!111" that the first ones laugh at. I believe it's because there was a major place where the main (and almost only) focus was usermaps that the others have people interested in what they're doing, not the contrary.
If usermaps now get hosted on Duke4 into a "subcategory" just like the usermap subforum is hidden where nobody will looks at, I can already call that it will mean stagnation, maybe even discourage for mappers since they may feel like nobody cares about what they're doing anymore, and on the long run a slowdown of the entire activity around Duke3D.

Still, it's nice having a usermaps section.
#67 Posted 06 July 2010 - 03:02 AM
However, even though I think you're sort of full of crap here I can vaguely see your point and will grant your request, with conditions. After the maps section here has been open as a subforum for a week or so, I'll make it its own regular forum next to the modifications forum. If posting there doesn't increase by some measurable or at least mildly noticeable amount in the weeks after that, I'll make it a subforum again.
Seems fair, no?

If it works and is functional once finished I shall put the copy up for download if it's not too big incase anybody wants it for something, also if it works, I'm half tempted to wait a month or two, buy up the domain and stick it on a cheap server somewhere.
Don't get your hopes up though, it'll probably go wrong, and the mirror we alread have is good enough anyway - on top of that, for all we know, the site may come back.
Come to think of it, what's to stop one of us paying for the domain? Kim lost it fair and sqaure by not paying, could we not buy it and have that address linked back to the server it is on (for which at least 2 of us now know the IP address) thus keeping up the original site? I dunno about that you see, I've never tried to do anything like that, everything I have ever hosted has either been on my own servers or on... [Evil music]AOL Hometown[/Evil music] (Keep the latter one quiet please).

Waste of time and effort. It's fine the way it is.
The only thing I could remotely think of to change is to create two subforums under the main "User map and level editing discussion" thread. One for "WIP and random screenshots" and one for "Released"
NB(C?)BP should be moved to the mapping section though. It throws off this old man when I come in to look for it and it's not under the mapping thread.

It'd be morally questionable (and stealing) without Kim's explicit permission.

No, you can't. Clearly you have no clue how php even works if you're making comments like that.

I've always been a Java/ASP man myself.
I can make it work to an extent, it's just pulling the crappy MySQL database back that makes it difficult, probably isn't worth it anyway, it's very hard and I just wanted the maps and guide page without the broken formatting that the other mirror has. Actually the page formatting (style) kept breaking whilst I was copying the site out for myself anyway.

Not if we keep the site as it was before, it´s more like keeping alive what Kim made. Waiting for his approval doesn´t make too much sense for me because IMO he consciously left it happen.
Now seeing how Forge just reacts like a double edged sword, i would still suggest some other brave member. But somebody should keep alive DNR as a separate site, even when it´s stored here. Creating a mapping subforum help doesn´t help as much as creating another forum inside DNR again.
I like to come to this forum to see how the Eduke32´s and HRP´s progress go, but the mapping scene has always happened somewhere else... and -besides the quasi-offensive descriptions about mods- I agree with Methy about the single maps being one of the two biggest pillars supporting Duke´s longevity. The other one is of course the Eduke32/JonofDuke modern computers compatibility and level limits extension.

As of a few days ago, the guide is hosted here: infosuite.duke4.net.
It all seems to be intact... I haven't really checked it over thoroughly. I'd rather wait until v6.0 is finished to bother.

I'll miss the DN-R forum too, but I'm not coming into someone else's house and start making demands. DN-R is dead and gone, it's time to move on and adjust.
Tx already made accommodations to start a mapping forum. Something he didn't have to do.

It doesn't matter if we keep it "as it was before". If I break into your car and start using it, it's wrong whether I take good care of the car or not. I'm willing to believe that Kim would not mind us doing this but still, DNR is not public property and I definitely would not start setting up and running a new DNR without his permission, whether he'd give it anyway or not. (I have nothing against saving the site here though. It's like finding someone's wallet and keeping it safe until the owner can be contacted.)

I guess some DNS records might be out of date here though, my ISP is lame.
Edit: Yeah, if I use a proxy it works, so the DNS records here must be a few days old. I hope someone scrolls to the bottom of their forums...

But what is the point say of going back to the forums etc
The same shit will just happen again, a admin that never shows his face where as here at duke4.net they are around everyday.

Hosting it at Duke4 isn't a bad idea and I suppose that could be done AND the domain name kept (technically it is possible to do this).
