I saw the preview trailer on the Wii Nintendo Channel (they put it up during E3 or whatever game con it was announced at) with the marketing executives being total sleaze and saying shit like "Remember Goldeneye!? It was SO COOL. WELL NOW IT'S BACK!" and then watching those total "paid actor" focus testers get all excited, it was so retarded. Even if it was a real conversation they had with real people, why do I care? Why do I need to see a video of some gamer having a nerdgasm? Why do they continue to lump gamers into a stereotype where if some "gamer" gets excited we all do? It was a completely fucking stupid way to start out a trailer.
Goldeneye doesn't need to come back, this generation already has a few "Goldeneyes" IMO (and I don't mean 007 licensed games, I mean games that capture the spirit of GE).
As for the game itself, it never really looked THAT great. It had it's shining points, though. I admit that even though the enemies had stupid-doofy faces (are those the programmers or something?) the photorealism of the faces blew me away, the same goes for the environment textures. Also when it went into cutscene mode and everything moved more like a movie (do you know what I'm talking about? How did they do that!?), that was cool.
The graphics were never really the point of praise for the game, though. I never personally had an N64 until the end of it's lifecycle when I broke down and bought a Pikachu N64, but I used to play 4P at a friend's house and in MP you don't care about the graphics (at least I didn't), it's all about the fun you have.
I don't have high expectations at all for this new game. Activision destroys everything it touches, and while I can't make a judgment based on a video alone, it looked like they only cared about copying the looks and aesthetic of Goldeneye, but putting it in a different engine that looks like it would feel different and not like the original. Also I'm not a big fan of Daniel Craig either, but that's neither here nor there.
FWIW, I've only played one game that captured the essence of what Goldeneye brought to the table gameplay-wise, and that's Timesplitters 2 (and surprise surprise when you consider who was behind it).
Anyway I don't have to bitch about this new Goldeneye if it's not exactly like the original. I have the original rotting in my closet, and if I actually cared I would break it out and play it once in a while.
tl;dr: much like most of my posts, there is no point. :3
100% true. But the graphics at the time were fab. I brought the N64 at the start and I personally thought they were great. Anyway Goldeneye is sooooooooooo fondly remembered that no one care about the graphics. And about a game that matches GE in terms of gameplay well what about Perfect Dark? And as you know because the thread I made I too hate Activision.
BTW MusicallyInspired about levels returning don't hold your breath as I know for a FACT that at the very least the MP levels are NOT coming back as said EDGE mag. preview.
