This is a theory I have been working on, please don't take it seriously, I'm just having a laugh.

Duke Nukem Forever

In the mid-90's 3D Realms began working on a game featuring Duke Nukem, due to technical limitations of the day and lack of funding due to the teams love for drugs and hookers, 3D Realms decided that they would make a highly advanced sidescroller but did not want to write their own engine. The team looked at Rise of the Triad and thought that if they could do this with the Wolf3D engine, what could they do with the Keen Galaxy engine? They got in touch with ID Software immediately with the intention of obtaining a license to that engine, assuming it would be cheap due to ID abandoning Keen.

ID Software told George and Scott that they were also frustrated with the lack of high-tech 3D Polygonal engines and were trying to write a new one - they also said that they already had an engine in the pipeline but it was not quite ready yet, this engine was in fact the Quake Engine, ID made a deal with George where they would license the Quake engine to 3D Realms for free as long as they were to develop it into a more advanced, so advanced that it would take a long time to develop but would never get old or outdated, this engine was titled "Forever" and would first be used for a new Duke Nukem game, but all this would be top secret - nobody was allowed to know about it, not even the people working on it or the Webmaster (Joe).

The information leaked shortly after but was misinterpreted by many, by the time it reached the fans the game was been refered to as Duke Nukem Forever, much the same as Valve add Source to the end of their games today and Joe, knowing no differently, added information about the game to the website thinking he must have forgotten to do that earlier and hoping that George and Scott would not notice how late he was in doing so.

All was not well at 3D Realms, in his office, George sat there looking at the companies bank statement, this thing was draining them dry, and he could not even afford a hooker, there was nothing else for it, George was off to Vegas to win at poker. This was leaked but was hard to understand so people thought the game had a casino level in it. At the poker tournament George did not do very well at all, at one point he had so little money that they would not let him in, so George decided to show them his contract with ID and bet that - the Casino decided to allow this after he showed them a demo, anyone that had that contract could easily give that engine to ID and make a lot of money - but George wanted more than he could make already by advancing the engine more, there was no way he could lose...

Around this time, Epic Megagames was working on a new engine to rival that of the original Quake engine, this was the Unreal Engine, but it was not as advanced as they would have liked... This would later become very important to the games industry and nobody would ever know.

George lost the contract to a man from Washington, ID found out and were very angry with George, the contract was void and there was no trace of the advanced Forever engine, George had given his last copy of the source code to the man who won the contract, and decided to cover the whole thing up - ID also had to cover things up as they were sure what they had done was not legal. The Quake Engine slowly died out over time. Prey was one of the last games to use the technology, this was on an older version of the Forever engine and it was hard to release without ID knowing.

By the late 1990's 3D Realms managed to pull the same stunt with Epic and began to develop the Unreal Engine to a more advaned level, handing what they did to Epic, basically the same as what they were supposed to do with Quake, at this point the Unreal Engine goes up against the Quake Engine, without 3D Realms to develop the thing, ID had to concede defeat to Epic's Unreal Engine and the Quake Engine slowly disappeared.

Around this point, a small Washington company named Valve was showing off a new engine of their own titled "GoldSrc" that looked rather impressive, a bit like those old "Forever" screenshots really, this company would go on to release such things as Half-Life and after finishing the renderer George started, the Source Engine.

3D Realms continued with the "Begins Forever" engine, they showcased this in 2001 with a mock up of a Duke Nukem game, but they knew to wait until the engine was finished. They were ready to release the 2D Game based on a hacked up Keen engine, ID would never license them that thing now, even if they hadn't messed up that contract, they had stolen that engine anyway and ID would sue them. They decided to sell this engine off and call it Prism, Prism's are 3D Triangles, triangles have 3 sides and that engine had had 3 games on it, there are 5 sides which coincided with it's last game, Keen 5. Nobody would ever know. They then sold the engine to Sunstorm Interactive on the basis that they had a license, they would then release their game under the guise of "Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project" - ID found out and sued Sunstorm, causing them to go bankrupt, this is why the source code was thought of as "lost" and in "legal limbo" - because it technically belonged to ID.

Epic continued to use the engine, it was practically been developed for free, the only cost was the license they gave out on day one!

Unfortunately, years before, back when things were based on Quake, ID wondered why this Duke Nukem Forever game that appeared on the 3D Realms site one day did not have a publisher, and decided as a gift, to get one for 3D Realms, seeing as they'd make the money back on the advancements in the engine's technology! 3D Realms didn't even know this contract existed, not until May 2009, and we all know the story from there, the dev team was fired, but only because George didn't want to reveal the top secret contract. It is now thought that 3D Realms must rush a game fitting the description in the contract out.

Duke Nukem Forever was never a game, it was a test for the "Forever" engine and a disguise to tell the dev team so they didn't know what they were doing, where do you think the lighting engine in Mirrors Edge came from? What about Unreal Tech 3? It was all 3D Realms.

That's my silly theory for now, I'm sure there was more, I'll ammend it if so.

We'll wait until they either release it or say it's cancelled, these forums aren't only about the game, it's about the community as well you know, but as you probably don't have a social life at all you clearly don't know much about that.
