Remaking Duke Maps In Unreal

I was thinking about remaking duke maps for Unreal using new textures based off of the 3D Realms textures, but I was afraid it would be copyright. Do you think it will be okay?

I'm no expert. But I think some Source-based thing was shut down a long time ago, but if you re-draw it all yourself and only do the Shareware levels I personally don't know why it wouldn't be okay. But as I said, I'm no expert at that stuff.

Precisely... That's basically what I'm doing with UT2004, making Deathmatch maps that are based in similar environments that Duke would fight in. Like a nuclear factory and warehouse, as a good example.

It will be okay if You ONLY do the Shareware Levels.

Actually it won't because that HL2 mod got shutdown even though they were just posting pics of E1L1.

Nope. This will be a breach of a copyright, this has been attempted before.

"GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that 3D Realms stopped work on an amateur Half-Life 2 mod which aimed to recreate their Duke Nukem 3D released in 1996. The company informed the fans that it does not allow any of its intellectual property to be used in conversions or mods for other game engines, forcing the project to be shut down."

Meaning that no Duke mods at all are allowed.

Oh well, Score +1 for creativity then, I'm gonna go back to my mod and re-edit some things now... *walks away*

Half these so called "cease and deists" I think are bullshit.
I believe it is just another way of saying
"Shit, you know what. We didn't realise how big of a project this would be so we are just going to abandon it and spin you guys the cease and deist story so it doesn't make us look bad."

You will get no such 'spin' from me. Unless GB himself or his lawyer hand delivers a judges order for me to stop, then they can kmfa.
Besides that would mean he stopped gambling/playing xbox live/etc to notice anything.

According to my surfing around the web of Duke maps being done in Unreal Tournament, I came across this.
Hmm... Wonder who would do such a thing, this is nice, but even so...

Yeah, because I would use all the 3D Realms textures and not make my own textures at all.

Well...in UT3, most of Epic's stock textures are perfect. In fact, I believe that the ASC_ series of meshes and textures seem like they are all from Shadow Warrior to me, could be wrong. So, maybe not Duke so much, unless you use HU_ and LT_ in conjunction, but Shadow Warrior classics are pretty easy to pull off with Epic's stock meshes, textures, and materials, etc...

Yeah there are plenty of E1L1 Hollywood Holocausts in the Doom engine. I've seen like 3 so far.

I know there is a program to convert Duke maps to Unreal maps. In fact, some DooM mappers use Wad2map to convert Wad maps to Build and later to Unreal.

Here is one of the better remakes of E1L1 that I have seen for the source engine. (This is actually released and not WIP)

The graphics are nice.

But whats with the CryEngine2?

Edit: Is it legally to convert all Duke 3D maps?

I have find the first level of Duke Nukem 3D in the CryEngine 2.

Your beliefs are wrong. Some of us actually wanted to finish our Hugh Jass projects.

Nope. Very much illegally to do that. <_<
