Wouldn't it be cool to have a modern Commander Keen Game?

Using a modern 3D engine like Manhattan Project or a classic 2D engine?

I don't care, as long as it's by Tom Hall.

Edit: there was a post here before basically saying that when sega switched sonic from 2d to 3d, the result wasn't so good, but that post seems to have been deleted.

I thought the first Sonic Adventure was really good, but I admit it did go downhill after that. But Sonic was a 3D platformer, aren't we talking about a 2D platformer with 3D graphics?

Right, like DNMP. And I agree with you on Sonic Adventure.

They'd fuck up like Sonic. You wouldn't like it. Nobody would buy it.

How would you know? I'm talking about a 2D Game with a 3D ENGINE!

Mleh, that's almost as bad as bringing Bio Menace back from the dead in that format. Not gonna happen.

Side scrolling games are still being released, such as Trine, and that was received reasonably well.

You're right about that...depends on if they're done with the right engine, and the right graphics, and all that. Like Azteka (sp?), I believe it was...I was looking into getting that one.
I'm really interested in that DN: Critical Mass for PSP, hoping that'll be better than Manhattan Project as a side-scroller, but doubtful.

Anyway, back on Commander Keen, even if there were a new side-scroller, I'm hoping we'll have something better than the Prism3D engine, and definitely better than anything Sega's been using for their Sonic games.
I'm wondering if the Rage engine (id Tech 5 I believe?) would work as well under side-scrollers as it does in FPS games. Just a thought.

C'mon, you know what happens when you guys start thinking.

And yet I suppose you never started, seeing as how the 3D sonic games have all been platformers and not sidescrollers.

I can't really see Commander Keen's style working with 3D graphics.

Why? New Super Mario Bros. did it brilliantly and it seems that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is doing it right as well.

Yeah, I know... Can't really imagining it looking right with Keen, though. Actually, I can't really imagine Keen looking right with more than 16 colors.

Commander Keen as a retro-styled (cartoon) Third Person Shooter/Adventure game. It'd be a series reboot, retelling the original games events.

I don't see how it would work. Commander Keen is definitively a platforming game. The pogo stick is about as iconic as Commander Keen himself. Platforming from a third-person perspective would be very difficult unless it was done in a manner similar to Gex: Enter The Gecko.

Thats basically what I was thinking of, or something along the lines of a Mario 64/Crash Bandicoot/Spyro hybred.
