Hi,

I used to make maps for fun as a kid when I bought Duke 3D at xmas, shortly after release. My older brother started learning BUILD and taught me and I took it to new heights! Some reason, now 43 years old I crave to start again so I'm messing about with Mapster32 which is great fun!

Through my practice, I've wondered..... for such a old game there must be 1000's upon 1000's of free assets and resources (textures, sprites, sounds etc) to use for mapping now, with all the years and skill of community since 1996.... but I can't find much at all through several google searches. I also used the Resource Stock Pile post on here, but half the resources don't show (gives photo bucket error or not for my region..).

Am I missing something or did hardly anything custom by modders get made for Duke since 1996? I expected to see cool new enemies sprites and all sorts for using in BUILD / Mapster32.

You are missing something which is the organization of the output has changed. People were releasing loose .art/.con edits more commonly around 1996-97 because community projects didn't exist yet and it was the only thing to do. Nowadays people are connected and whenever an asset is created usually immediately goes to the project that commissioned it, or finds a comparable purpose, instead of releasing as stray file.

You have the same expectations for the Duke community as you do for Doom's, which is unfortunately unrealistic. We do have a community stockpile here, but due to the passage of time and modern internet restrictions, much of it is no longer available.

Sadly, the forums are no longer very active since the Discord server was created. If you want to chat with people and stay up to date with the latest news, it's worth creating an account and joining the community server. You can find the Discord button at the top of the website.

If you're looking for tutorials or guides, check out InfoSuite for mapping and the EDukeWiki for scripting. Keep in mind that scripting requires programming experience, and the EDukeWiki is a reference, not a programming tutorial.

It's really quite sad that apparently the majority of people here have moved to a Discord style of forum.

I just followed the invite and it's the same experience as before. Maybe I'm missing something.

I readily adapt to many things that make sense to me, but this thing does not. A monolithic active thread, with a lot of interface fluff, if you will. The server loads content as you go back in time, so there's a significant delay - the interface soaks up a lot of a user's time. Not to mention not having the conversations/files available from eg the Wayback Machine...

One simple question to anyone around here that also uses Discord: Is there an alternate view that provides something similar to the normal, static, threaded style, with fast response time and easy readability that we enjoy at forums.duke4.net?

Back to the OP, I've not seen a resource like what you've wanted, but I wonder if it could be created with an automated scrape of the still existing map sites somehow. Scent-88 bit the dust last time I checked, but there are others (as well as the Internet Archive possibly).

There is a possibility of "threads" and Duke4 Discord has its own "modding projects" channels where you can launch threads, there's even an anti-flooding system in place that prevents people from rapidly spamming the threads. I wouldn't demonize Discord, it's simply different than forums - better for some stuff, worse for other.

It seems everything on Duke4 is back to normal working speed/order. The problem with Scent-88 is that it has ~70 second delay between downloads or risking IP ban. But all of the maps can be downloaded from old Dukeworld archive, there's even a folder for "art" (although rather scarce): https://dukeworld.co.../other/artwork/

I agree, even though duke4 discord server was a tremendous help for me when I was starting out mapping it sucks as a place for the community. Its horrible pit of trash where everything good gets buried by pointless arguing over same thing every single day. Its unfortunate that I got into Duke this deep only now when the forum is completely desolate. What a shame.

Discord does have the features that make it closer to the forum system but the problem is 90% of userbase will never engage with it because that feature is buried deep under the shit and piss I mentioned above. Its a terrible place for archiving discussion or feedback since the place is made for short term quick conversations.

100%. It is where braincells and (true) productivity go to die. It is non-stop noise, full of shit and whoever doesn't realize is just addicted to the dopamine and feeling of pseudo-importance to a degree and thus couldn't accept the perspective. I am genuinely angry I was lured to make an account in order to help with work on stuff a while back, biggest waste of time of my life (dead serious), and I only ever stuck to the Duke servers too. It's like some kind of Reddit live, egos just farting in the wind non stop, can piss off just as much. Even to organize work on projects it isn't as efficient at all, just looks like it because of so many pings but most of them are just empty displays of personal confusion, or concerns that wouldn't exist if the person would have stopped a second to think before they typed.

Counterpoint: the forum infrastructure still exists and I don't get why some of us behave like it doesn't anymore. Let's just keep using the thing and stay focused. Place is as active as you make it, we collectively choose how much is decentralized. And! From this point on it would be nice if we also collectively stopped derailing threads with mentions of Discord ever again, it is starting to become a trend and may be just as toxic as using it.
