Raven software thread

This thread is mainly created as a tribute to Raven software. You can discuss anything related to Raven's titles here. Just in case if you don't know Raven software are the creators of games like Hexen, Heretic, Soldier of fortune, Singularity, Quake 4 and many other great games.

After their last title Singularity they were banished into the deepest of dungeons by Activision, forced to make call of duty dlcs for an eternity.

I recently played one of their lesser known game Take No Prisoners and really enjoyed its gameplay and soundtrack. It's really unique for Its time and I'm pretty sure it would be labelled as a hotline miami clone if it wad released today.

What's your favorite game made by Raven?

Heretic belongs to my top 3 shooters with Doom and Duke3D. The first three episodes are still a blast and I really adore E3's theme and map design. I have played Hexen on and off but the game gets repetitive by the 3rd hub with the limited arsenal and the cramped 90-degree maps. Gave Q4 and Singularity shots but stopped early. Too bad the company hasn't been the same since 1997.

I find there's a certain charm to their earlier titles like ShadowCaster an CyClones, but I only played the demo versions.

Heretic is nice, I liked HeXen more for the atmosphere though -- but I haven't played it in over a decade. Tried HeXen II recent-ish, it started rather neat but I got bored before getting out of the first hub's castle.

I don't know what to say about this one. Like Doom, Hexen and heretic were already in a great place. There's tons of source ports already and the files for game can be easily purchased online. The modding community is pretty active too. What else do you need? There are many other games that deserve the remaster/remake treatment more than doom, hexen or heretic.

If by in a good place, you mean in a DOSBox wrapper on GOG/Steam then sure. But now it's more accessible and available on more platforms too.

I get your point. I didn't counted sourceports as unofficial.

Someone is very, very happy of this release. He was working on a video about RedDuke port when he saw the sudden notification.

Also, WidePix creator Nash is very glad to know that his widescreen works becomed official in this port. A tale of hard work recognized.

Maybe all the widescreen stuff made by the community for DN3D will be officially integrated too in a port one day. (Without Randy)

Bought it for ps even though already owning it on pc. Playing Heretic on a console with cross-platform multiplayer seems fun. The remixed maps look too distracting with the unused/custom graphics glued in random places. It reminds me of those "doom remix" wads two decades ago. Legacy of Rust had the same look. The good thing is that the enhancements can be disabled.

It's pretty sad that ND, likely one person actually, thought it was needed to slap in their "enhancement" mod and set it on by default. How are these improvements and why should they be seen as the new official standard? More textures and different level layouts? Just seems like revisionism as was pointed out by Doom64Hunter on Doomworld forums. Sure, you can turn it off, but that doesn't change the reality that they felt Heretic wasn't good enough to preserve accurately. Hexen, they barely even changed much. So it just looks exactly like one of the devs had a mod lying around for Heretic and just patched it in because he had the opportunity to do so, and Hexen is more of an afterthought.

After playing the first three episodes of the remaster (with enhancements), I gotta say this version of Heretic feels like a new, different game. Not only have the levels been modified to such an extent that they can be considered completely remade from scratch - many of the weapons are now so strong that the Tome of Power almost becomes entirely redundant.

Admittedly, the original Heretic had a very low amount of textures and looked boring after a while with its repetitive visual designs. But does it justify such drastic changes? As a mod I'd have no problems with it, but as an official re-release, I'd prefer if the new content had been some sort of DLC or at least a separate menu option you have to choose deliberately, not a default you need to deselect first to get the original experience.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this remaster and the effort that went into it. However, it could have been realized with a softer, more sensitive approach. Personally I'll probably play the enhanced stuff once before returning to the originals I know and love.

Honestly, I cannot decide if making the enhanced levels the default is good or bad. After all, this is marketed as a remaster and you get the DOS originals if you hadn't purchased them before anyway.

I did not immediately realise the extent of changes from playing through the first couple of levels from E1, but firing up E2 and E3 it was immediately obvious that the levels got a considerable overhaul -- and so far I can say it feels like a moderate improvement, actually. I have to confess that although Heretic was the first Doom engine game that I ever played (but very briefly and I was little), it was never one of my top favourite games. I appreciated the shareware E1 that I played much later in the early 2010s, and I do believe that it's kinda more varied than Doom's E1, but when I decided to try the DOS registered episodes last year, it felt a bit more like a disappointment really. I got to E2L3 and the design felt a bit repetitive, with all the caves and lava and more caves and more lava. The overhauled levels in the remaster appear to introduce more variety to this, giving off some HeXen vibes in certain places, even.

There's still the option to switch back to the original levels, isn't there? I think it's fine. After all, there are games from the 90s where the shareware version had even more drastic changes in level design between releases, check out Radix for example.

Nightdive needs to fire Xaser and Not Jabba immediately. Idiots still stuck in the "babby's first mario maker level" school of design should not be getting paid for it.

What exactly is "babby's first mario maker level" school of design?

Trial-and-error hell disguised as difficulty, with a side order of enemy spam.
