[RELEASE] Gut Feelin'  "new EDuke city map w/ new art"

User is offline   ck3D

New city map I've made using 25-year-old homemade textures by Necrobitz (currently working on DukeTEK). More info in .txt.

Not excessively big but can still take 45 to 60 minutes to pass. Ten secrets.

Temporary link (expires next week): https://we.tl/t-NqMUPG34XU

Screenshots w/ some spoilers:

Thanks Necrobitz for the art and WG and Merlijn for testing. Have fun hopefully.

You need the included TILES014.art file in your game folder, since that's where the textures are, or they won't work.

Damn!
This was a tough one. Much harder than I anticipated. So much so that, by the time I got to the final area, I was feeling very exausted and frustrated. But then again the joke's on me for playing it during a very stressful day. So I do have plans to give it another go and see if I can appreciate it more, playing it more calmly.

Despite that, this seems to be a very solid map. The new artstyle looked neat and kinda reminded me of a obscure and unfinished TC called City Crackdown. I also liked the atmosphere in the second city area, very surreal.
The little Protector Drones were a pain in my ass; as they were hard to hit and were just as strong as the normal ones. Something about little enemies with an attitude do rile me up often.
As for secrets,

One last thing before I go: I found a technical issue in the grocery store. One of the sharks somehow clipped through the aquarium glass and started swimming in the air.

I'm surprised but at the same time glad it was challenging, I don't think it's my most difficult map but the challenge may be different this time around with less projectiles and more well-placed hitscan in the mix, especially Enforcers I used more than I normally do. I'd imagine how many secrets one finds and the route they take (especially out of the first building) plays a big role. Depending on how much they find the player might end up out on the first street completely loaded on health, shotgun and even some RPG or, instead, with just the pistol (of course all ways are viable but the former option is a lot easier than the latter). In general finding all the guns is key (but not so hard) in this map because ammo supplies aren't so excessive so there's often quite a lot of weapon switching going on.

The small Newbeasts I usually just use explosives against but if out of them then the shotgun can pick up on them (even with autoaim, just takes the right distance). Typically I use pipebombs or devastator though.

The secret you mentioned is right at the end of the map, reach the snowplow with the Nukebutton then study the building in the back, looking way high up.

And yeah I know about the shark, sometimes it does that, and apparently Newbeasts can clip into the fish tank as well if they try but there isn't much I can do, that's pretty typical of those enemies the ability to clip through solid walls.

Thanks for playing and the feedback!

This map runs great in DukePlus and the new weapons help a lot with (eg) the Commanders, as well as with some of the other enemies. Definitely challenging and fun.

Edit: the art was a refreshing change from stock, thanks for taking the time to put it in (and for the whole map :) )

Love the art direction you took for this map. I think that yes, while hitscan enemies are plenty, i was never too bothered by them. Maybe because it's not that hard to cheese the Battlelords tbh. The only thing I did find a bit frustrating was being jumped by pigcops occasionally.
Other than that, I liked the layout and structure of the map too, it was pretty well designed overall, some really creative use of textures as always.

Thanks, it was a lot of fun working with Necrobitz's texture set. The Battlelords do not have to be avoided or cheesed if the player is good at finding secrets, there is a couple at the beginning (and multiple ways of descending down the building) that will stock you up on shotgun ammo and supply the RPG, so depending in how you go it's totally doable to fight the minibosses as you meet them. About the direction of the map, 1/3 is Dario Argento (with a hint of Stephen King in the mall) and 2/3 dreams I had throughout the last couple of weeks, the last section in particular is quite 1:1 with the dream.
