Looking for Mark McWane's orchestral Duke3D music
#1 Posted 13 January 2024 - 09:18 AM
Some people might recall a music pack released by Mark McWane around 2004, and used with source ports like Rancidmeat's duke3d_w32 and xDuke. Such a pack (more than one revision/variation) can still be found in a few sources.
In addition, though, there might be another set of tracks which I assume to be unavailable right now, at least one of them. It is an orchestral rendition of Grabbag, and I wonder if anyone has an unmodified copy. Here's where I suspect it used to be available from: https://web.archive.....com/music.html
Other tracks of similar nature are available from here; The zip file name is referenced from a dead FileFront link and I haven't found it so far, not that I'm sure it even matches at all: https://markmcwane.w...nukem-3d-music/
Thanks for any assistance!

If he saved that, he might have the other tracks as well

Thanks for the suggestion. I did see the link earlier, and I'm indeed unsure the file had the tracks in question. I'm not fully familiar with all past and present AMC Squad members, and since this is an old 3DR forums post from 2009, I didn't even know if the person was still around.
I wanted to see if someone with the files would see the thread and reply.

Thanks for letting me know.
I guess the Grabbag track is not out there, outside of a possible snippet mixed with other sounds. I asked Loke, who also didn't have this rendition of Grabbag, while only having the other songs of Mark downloaded in the past. Hendricks266 also couldn't find it after having a brief look.
I'll still keep the thread open, just in case.

These are very old low-resolution videos that I uploaded to YouTube and - along with sound effects - might also (with reduced quality) play the aforementioned Grabbag rendition in the background.

In particular I remember Storm playing back in way too fast of a tempo which struck me as odd.

Wow, I think it has the exact rendition of Grabbag that I had previously been looking for! I was comparing it, side-by-side, with the music from one of the old Duke-Tag! tutorial videos (the "team work" video). I did have to adjust the volumes and it might not be perfect, due to the quality and presence of sound effects, but they did sound really close to me.
Many thanks for going through your archives!
The main question now is if this thread should be left open, in case someone has any file not in the aforementioned ZIP file previously referenced by me, or alternatively, in one of the following files:
- https://www.mediafir...ke32_ostmus.zip (Recorded upload time: 2008-10-01 23:51:56)
- Music pack for Rancidmeat's duke3d_w32, as available from the person who started the xDuke source port (and previously, probably also linked by the original maintainer of duke3d_w32, on which xDuke is based).
- Other possible archives, even if only partially relevant; One example: http://moreplease.fr...ke32_mus105.zip
Otherwise, as far as it comes to me at the least, I'm done here. Thanks again for the assistance!

no link?
my xDuke has a folder in it called 'Tunes' and has a bunch of ogg files in it, but I'm not sure it's the same thing you're talking about.
you posted up a link to eduke32_ostmus & eduke32_mus105, but not the other ones; like eduke32_psxmus, eduke32_macmus, eduke32_mus, etc. (all that other stuff hendricks had on his site)
are the rest of those eduke32 sound archives not relevant to what you're looking for?

Rancidmeat's website has a dead link to an older incarnation of Mark McWane's site. The xDuke web page has the music pack, but currently hosts xDuke v19.8 binaries, while the xDuke sources rather match v19.7.1. The purpose of this was making it more difficult to make cheats for multiplayer games, but there's also the thing of xDuke being derived from GPLed Duke3D sources. I currently assume that Duke4.net admins will prefer me to not link to the website for now.

That's probably the one from the xDuke page.

The thread was originally created with McWane's unavailable orchestral renditions of Duke3D music, with an emphasis on tracks that used to be available from an 2004-era revision of McWane's website (or at least, close enough). My main interest was really in the Grabbag rendition, eventually found by MusicallyInspired as far as I can tell, and I had already published a new Duke-Tag! tutorial video without music. Therefore, I'm more-or-less done from my side.
