I think it's good Gianni has brought more interest to Duke, I'm just not a big fan of the method that's being used to do so. Making Duke say absolute nonsense he would never actually say in Twitter meme videos is going to change how new fans see the character because those videos and memes will be in the search results when they search for Duke. It's altering public perception of the character and I view it similarly to what they did to Duke in DNF 2011. I wouldn't have had a problem with those memes as a temporary trend, but the fact that it keeps on going is likely going to have an impact on whatever may be left of the IP.

Anyway, there's one big difference between Gianni and JSJ, hype. Gianni never hyped his impressions the way JSJ hyped up his Duppet. Imagine if TerminX was hyping that he was about to make a BIG announcement and then it turns out 3DR/VP is partnering with James Charles to launch a skincare line.

To be perfectly honest, I have never cared for Gianni’s Duke stuff once it became overdone. It was funny at first, with the shitpost their memes, but it ran its course a long time ago... He’s certainly helped spark some interests in Duke with people who otherwise wouldn’t have gave two fucks, but whether that’s a good thing or not, well, you be the judge.

With that said, JSJ shouldn’t have told him he was cool with it if he wasn’t. Most of this could’ve been avoided had he not done that.

..Jon doesn't have to be "cool with it." He doesn't own the character.

I made the argument in that long ass thread about how much of a asshead Jon is, that he is absolutely the face of the franchise, because he via conventions and constantly doing the Duke voice was keeping the character at least somewhat in the public eye, and he was the one to nail the vocal performance with the help of Lani and George. The reality is though... He has no ownership over Duke. Never has.

I never made the implication that JSJ has ownership over Duke and can dictate who can and who cannot do the voice themselves, my point was that had JSJ had not "told me that I rock, and to keep on doing them.", Gianni would've stopped doing the voice then and there as he had explained in the link on the OP, thus preventing all the batshit behavior from JSJ that came after he said that. JSJ ultimately did this to himself.

I get the distaste for gianni. I myself think the meme crap isn't all that good. But regardless of my personal feelings on his work, what JSJ is doing is pretty pathetic, and not really in any way justifiable. Gianni has the freedom to do Duke impressions and that should be respected regardless of how we feel about the results.

It's a loose situation tbh. On one hand we have Jon who is a known asshole and who afaik has used the hype of the Duke Nukem brand to sell unrelated stuff. My concern is that they've seen how many views the Twitter memes have racked in the past several years and that it might have an influence on what they do with the movie or even a future game. The renewed interest has at least motivated them more to want to try to make a movie. With Randy retweeting one of Gianni's videos and a producer saying they've got a hilarious take on the character, it makes me wonder what might actually happen. Some people will say they're only memes, but they've become so viral and perpetual that they seriously could have an influence on the future of Duke. They're getting way more views than anything Jon puts out and that's not something to ignore. I mean, you can't do a search for Duke Nukem anymore without one of those memes or meme videos showing up, whether they're voiced by Gianni or someone else. When people make those types of memes, I take it that they truly don't care about the character and they're just taking advantage of his neglected status. I wouldn't have any issues with them if they were being made in a way that stayed faithful and respectful to the character, but I don't sense that's what's going on a majority of the time. It wouldn't be too late to change course in a better direction, though.

Having said that, I'm also fully aware of how Jon can behave and the things he's done, plus he's made Duke say unfitting things, too. The only way I would be behind Jon doing more voicework in the future is if he was being closely directed again on how he should sound. Randy would have to face the fact that having Jon voice Duke the way Jon sees fit isn't the right business decision. If not, then I probably would be open to some other voice actor coming in to take over if they could nail the voice. Being a Duke fan since I was around 6 years old, it pains me to make that suggestion.

Anyone who thinks a Duke Nukem movie after coming in and out of production for years could possibly be good or faithful need only look at how well a live action series going in and out of production for years worked out so well for Halo.

I've pretty much accepted the fact that whatever we get from the Duke movie, if it ever happens, WON'T be the Duke we know, we'll be lucky if we even get something similar to his Bulletstorm portrayal.

I don't see Duke being done right again unless OGs like George or Allen Blum get heavily involved again as George did direct Jon throughout the Duke games until 2011 Forever, also lets not forget Lani Minella.

As for the Duke fucking the femboy thing.....ugh.

I'd rather watch Duke throw feces at wall boobs for an hour.
