The 2006 or 05 build of DNF was actually said to be basically done.

I've only heard once that one of these builds of DNF were were finished before 3D Realms restarted development during the time process of when they were made.

3D Realms: "DNF is (almost) done!"
Broussard: "Back to formula"
3D Realms: "But-"
Broussard: "BACK TO FORMULA!"

Not even the released version of the game is done.

If Georgy Boy didn't want to take it any longer at that time. DNF would've ended up getting released before Prey in 2006

Quick word of advice:

Don't be daft. Try not to believe everything you read. Take everything you read about this build with a grain of salt.

They should have waited 10 more years and then refurbished the DNF 2001 build as a throwback shooter.

I've heard stories now that many of the DNF builds were basically "done" before getting scrapped. But that raises an interesting question. Were they almost "done" in the sense that a responsible company like id Software could've had that game "Gold Master" status within a couple months? Or were they only as "finished" as LameDuke? A clearly beta build, but with plenty of content which probably could've been polished into a shipped game in that form if they didn't change their minds about everything.

The question has always been too complicated to really answer.

Also it's really hard to get a solid timeline on what the "2005" build was. What Jace Hall played was a mature build that was started with the great reset when a bunch of employees left in 2005. Of that build Jace said they could ship something very soon, and that it was more polished than a lot of finished games he had worked on.

So what happened? Scott says they didn't have the man power for most of DNF. I don't buy that. Of course the more i've gotten to know, and learn of, these people the more full of shit i've leaqrnd they were. Swindlers athe lot of them. The real talent of Duke3D went largely unsung and got screwed over by TPTB.

My best break down in this.
1996-97 Quake 1 prototyping
1997-1998 Quake 2 "build" which was on the chopping block fairly early on.
1999-2002 Build. The golden goose. The game we all wanted to play.
2003-2005/6: A strange period of what seems to be iterative redesign. What looked almost like "Prey Nukem" at certain points.
2005/6-2008/9: The "Jace Hall" build. Where Duke had a Half-Life style HUD, faster movement, all of his abilities, and the game wasn't broken.
2010-release: Two weapon limit, slower player movement, restricted inventory, bad writing, daytime Vegas. No bombshell. Yadda yadda yada.

As weider was quick to always remind us though, these eras blended into one another. The big "exodus" that occdured, and the hard resert between 1998 and 1999 being the most dramatic shifts. However, if you look at a lot of the leaks that are out there, a lot of the release-era content was taken from as far back as 2004. There are shots of things like the strip club from the nightmare dating back that far. There are even textures int he game, still in use, that are clearly from the 2001 era.

The game is just a mess.
