The question has always been too complicated to really answer.
Also it's really hard to get a solid timeline on what the "2005" build was. What Jace Hall played was a mature build that was started with the great reset when a bunch of employees left in 2005. Of that build Jace said they could ship something very soon, and that it was more polished than a lot of finished games he had worked on.
So what happened? Scott says they didn't have the man power for most of DNF. I don't buy that. Of course the more i've gotten to know, and learn of, these people the more full of shit i've leaqrnd they were. Swindlers athe lot of them. The real talent of Duke3D went largely unsung and got screwed over by TPTB.
My best break down in this.
1996-97 Quake 1 prototyping
1997-1998 Quake 2 "build" which was on the chopping block fairly early on.
1999-2002 Build. The golden goose. The game we all wanted to play.
2003-2005/6: A strange period of what seems to be iterative redesign. What looked almost like "Prey Nukem" at certain points.
2005/6-2008/9: The "Jace Hall" build. Where Duke had a Half-Life style HUD, faster movement, all of his abilities, and the game wasn't broken.
2010-release: Two weapon limit, slower player movement, restricted inventory, bad writing, daytime Vegas. No bombshell. Yadda yadda yada.
As weider was quick to always remind us though, these eras blended into one another. The big "exodus" that occdured, and the hard resert between 1998 and 1999 being the most dramatic shifts. However, if you look at a lot of the leaks that are out there, a lot of the release-era content was taken from as far back as 2004. There are shots of things like the strip club from the nightmare dating back that far. There are even textures int he game, still in use, that are clearly from the 2001 era.
The game is just a mess.
