EDuke32 can't read your mind. IIRC, you have to run:

eduke32 /gvacation.grp /xvacation.con

ok so I dont have this vacation.con file and for some reason I cant get Caribbean to install anymore. I did open the vacation.grp file using eduke32, the aliens looked right and the weapons had the correct graphic but the sounds and music were wrong. the vacation episode was not listed either. I'm still stuck.

and the vacation.grp where did you get it?
is it for the atomic edition?

I created my vacation.grp from vaca15.ssi

the question is: do you have the original Vacation addon files?

check my post: http://forums.duke4.net/index.php?showtopi...ost&p=18667

Dear DukeNukem3D GODS,

Apologies in advance for the length of this post! I'm an ADMIN of a Motorcycle Forum, so I've tried to read the FAQ's and such, the installation instructions for the HRP's, Eduke32, etc.! I'm an old(51 y/o) fart, but have been messing around computers since the late 80's ...ie Commodore 64, then first IBM 486-DX50 in 94, found DOOM, then later DukeNukem3d!! I have the Original 1.3D disc, then got the Plutonia Pak and had to do the PATCH process to get the ATOMIC 4th level. My Duke3d.GRP file is 43,309kb dated 10/21/96, same dates as are on the Plutonia Pak files. I also copied the 1.3D version from the Original disc as well. I also have the actual Duke it out in DC Addon Disc by WizardWorks. I found the unpackssi.exe file along with the kgroup.exe file, and extracted the files from the DukeDC_PP.ssi file, then used the Kgroup to create the DukeDC.grp file, and then used the proper command line parameters in the shortcut to run Eduke32 with it, along with the Original HRP set. It works flawlessly, shows the DukeDC as the 3rd episode, and allows me to play thru it as usual!! :D

I read about the other addons for Duke...Carribean and Nuclear Winter. I did a search online because some fools on ebay wanted ~$30-60 for these discs! Found a complete ISO file for Winter, and also a RAR file set for Carrib. Actually Downloaded 2 sets of Carrib from 2 different services. After creating the Winter disc from the ISO, I ran it, and it installed a newer Duke3d.GRP file... 43,317kb dated 12/11/96. I copied a fresh Eduke32 file set to a separate folder, added the NWinter.grp file, along with the regular HRP and ran it, the game still shows the original names for the episodes, but when I got into episode 2, it starts the actual Nwinter map 1 and plays fairly well.

I created another fresh folder for Carrib, the files I d/l'd had the Vaca13.ssi, Vaca15.ssi, and Vacapp.ssi files, and I extracted them from the PP version first, then used Kgroup, created the Vacation.grp file, and tried to run it with my original "Patched" Plutonia Pak/Atomic version of Duke3d.grp. It didn't work! B)

Went back and extracted the Vaca13.ssi version, made the Vacation.grp file, replaced with the new file, and also the OLDER Duke3d.grp 1.3d version. Ran it, still didn't work! B)

I then went back to the Eduke website, found the new HRP for Carrib, D/L'd it, Un-7zipped it, read the readme.txt ! Fresh folder with Latest Eduke32 ver. 1.4.9.9, Duke3d_HRP.zip, VacaPP.ssi file, and ran the install BATCH file for the Carrib/Vacation HRP, it extracted the SSI files, made the Vacation.grp file along with 7 VACA#.map files and said it did the PATCH. I THEN moved the HRP and Vacation.grp files to the AUTOLOAD folder, ran the Eduke32, also tried it with the command line parameters in the Shortcut, but it still did NOT load the Vacation.grp LEVEL into the New Game/Episode Choice....I even paused the Eduke32 start up showing the Messages, and it showed it found and loaded the Vacation.grp file!!! B) Tried the Episode 3,...also 1 and 2 just in case, but they were all still the Original levels. They had the Carrib graphics, but the same OEM game levels.

I then restarted the game, and selected the USERMAP function, found the Vaca1.MAP file, and loaded it, and it showed the NEW MAP, LEVEL, and played with all of the graphics, sounds, weapons that the Carrib version is supposed to show. I finished the level heading to the HOTTUB, and got locked in the room as the level/map ended as it should, so I figured it was written to strip me of my weapons, etc. at that point before going on to the next level. HOWEVER, I don't think that I'll/Duke will get striped at the end of every level, but playing 1 map at a time...that's what will happen vs. being able to play it as a COMPLETE EPISODE!?

SO...can anybody tell me what I have to do to get the actual Vacation Episode to load and run in Eduke32 on my NEW homebuilt this year system..Intel E8400 3.0 Ghz dual Core, 4 gig ram, Gigabyte MB, Windows XP sp3 ????? B) ?

In before "You broke the law.":

Go to http://www.3drealms.com/downloads.html, and search for PPACK15.exe. Use this to patch your game from the Plutonium Pack v1.4 to Atomic Edition v1.5. Then, try making a brand new vaca.grp from Vaca15.ssi. If the game still doesn't run quite right, try using KEXTRACT.exe on the Vaca.grp. and extract both GAME.CON and USER.CON.

Wow! I'm glad you used the VacaHRP to extract everything, even if by less than legitimate means. Just so you know, you do not have to make a GRP out of VACAPP.SSI or VACA15.SSI, as there already is one inside. Duke D.C. and VACA13.SSI need that process to be done. Nuclear Winter is the easiest; the GRP file is right on the disc.

The fact that you can play through NW, even though the episode and level names are wrong, tells me something. Please post the contents of your eduke32.log file in codebox tags, like this:

Hey there Hendricks,

Okay, I looked at it, and even though when the Eduke loads, the GAME tab shows that it recognizes the Duke3d.grp file as the ATOMIC version, the "log" shows it as the 1.4+ version, not the 1.5! My Bad!! I thought the PP patch had made it the 1.5!?

I'm working on getting the PP1.5patch from 3DRealms to work, but having to use an OLD computer..P3 with less than 1Gb to run it, otherwise the patches are FAILING on my new machine..the message says that it's usually due to not enough hard drive space, but perhaps the old dos programs can't recognize the 100+GB style drives. The PPpatch from my original disc won't run because it doesn't recognize my RAM...needs 8 MB and it says I don't have enough?

I also see that the AUTOLOAD is trying to load the grp files twice?? Also, I have the MAPHACKS.zip which was from the Original HRP...I think...or were they left over from the SD-pack???

Thanks in advance for your time and trouble.

Followup,

When I applied the Vacation HRP, I had the Duke3d.grp file that came out of the Nuclear Winter install. I was just able to get the PPack15.exe to work with my original 1.3D disc, and my PPak disc, and the patch was completely succesful. HOWEVER, after it was done, the date and size specs for the Duke3d.grp file were exactly the same as the file from the NWinter install. SO...it looks like I "DID" use the 1.5 version of the Duke3d.grp file afterall when I tried to install the Vacation episode. And the Vacation Episode still doesn't show! Guess I'll be playing the individual MAPS and use the CHEAT codes to get all of my weapons/health/armor before starting IF I had them at the end of the previous MAP/level.

And folks, as far as the "illegal" acquisition of the files....get real!

WizardWorks which sold them, along with GT Interactive are both DEFUNCT companies, these products are no longer in PRINT/manufacture...........therefore these software packs are ORPHANED and really can be considered FREEWARE at this point.

T.C.

PS, awesome work on all of these HRP addons ! ! !

Not freeware, abandonware. The rights to truly publish the addons as freeware currently belongs to Atari, which has the same deathgrip on them as Commander Keen 6 and the Blood source code.

TopCat, there are a couple of misconceptions on your part.

1. The 1.4 GRP is exactly the same as the v1.5 GRP. That's why the game detects "v1.4+" files.

2. Do not put the addon GRPs or my addon HRP files in autoload. (NWINTER.GRP, VACATION.GRP, vacation_hrp.zip, nwinter_hrp.zip) They are not meant to work that way.

3. The reason the map names are not showing up is because you only told the game to recognize the GRP, not the special CON files. CON files CONtrol the game. They allow you to do a fair bit of programming within the game, and they are also used for the game settings, like episode and level names

4. To run my addon HRPs, you need to run the batch files that game in the packages: "Caribbean.bat" and "NWinter.bat". If you have trouble with those, open them in any text editor and replace the line:

if not exist eduke32 goto noduke

with

if not exist eduke32.exe goto noduke

Then you should be up and running.

Also, the reason that you could play Nuclear Winter as episode 2, even without the correct names, is that the NW map files are named the exact same as the normal maps.

I am constructing my website so that the critical instructions are explained right on the page, something that the HRP website lacks. The next version of the packs will have even easier installation: all you have to do is put in the addon CD, run the batch file, and everything will taken care of for you. Unless, of course, you don't have a CD.
