Last month I was exploring the RR levels inside Duke3D (using RedNukem port), since the map format is identical in both games (though as side effect the maps were having missing and wrong textures, due to the tile numbers being different in Duke3D and RR) and I was wondering if there exists a mod/way that allows you to play as Duke Nukem in Redneck Rampage. I would like in next months when I get to replaying the RR games (which I have mostly mixed feelings about them but still somewhat enjoyed, at least the sequel, and want to give them another chance, same to the few user maps and mods that exist to the game and haven't had the chance to play yet) to play through all the RR levels (and even the R66 and RA levels) as Duke Nukem with his same weapons, inventory items, quotes, HUD, etc from Duke Nukem 3D. The only things from RR will be the levels, textures, enemies and enemy/ambient sounds. Oh and the keys too. Not sure if the RR drink/food items and alcohol/food meters should remain, considering that Duke doesn't really need them but then there will be a lack of armor in the levels.
I realize that at the moment there isn't a mod or a way to play as Duke but I created the topic asking if anyone thought of this idea before, though I remember there was a similar discussion in a RR topic when I ranted about the game and found a mod that converted most Duke3D atomic levels into RR (though that mod sucked) and someone suggested about the other way around (playing as Duke in RR levels) which I agree with and hope to see possible. I actually think it may be possible for RedNukem and/or Raze source port in case it's not possible to do this kind of mod for the vanilla Duke3d/RR game. I am also not sure which should be the game required for this task (or maybe both by requiring both DUKE3D.GRP and REDNECK.GRP in same directory to be able to play). With all that said, I personally think that RR games will flow much better if you play as Duke because you will have access to much better weapons (imagine just using Shrinker against the toughest non-boss enemies and easily getting rid of them, just like how in original Duke3D you can get rid of Commanders and Mini Battlelords quickly) and you will have higher jump height (even if this means you can break the level design) and it will be a lot more fun. The only thing I may be missing will be the revolver because it was pretty decent and the weakest enemies dropped their pistol every time they died, so you never ran out of pistol ammo. In this case, when comes to enemies dropping their weapon, I think they should just drop ammo since their weapons will not match Duke's weapons. But then the Duke pistol will not be powerful enough to get you through most of levels but I think that's ok and it will add challenge.
What are people's thoughts on this? Do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea?
