My wishful thinking - Duke Nukem 3D remake
#1 Posted 24 November 2020 - 05:53 AM
I think about it, for last days a lot. I love retro fps games from 90's to let's say about 2007. But If I think about Duke Nukem 3D remake I got only few engine to use it for that. One of the most retro feeling with nice possibilities is Half Life engine, in goldsource version. I write more about my ideas later but watch this:
This topic is for all dreamers who still believe in nice Duke Nukem 3D remake in retro feeling grapfhics

There was a mod called Cataclysm that was made on the goldsrc engine. It was shut down over copyright fears.
https://www.moddb.co...clysm-prototype
The files are uploaded to moddb.
This is a great source version of Hollywood Holocaust:
Lots of fun in Deathmatch. Not sure it would be a good basis for a future Duke mod.

I'm so pissed, too on 3d realms they ruined the best DNF visions - version of 2001. It was so perfect, looks amazing on Unreal Engine 1:
#Tea Monster Am I understand good that gearbox block any things what is called DN3D remake even if is it free mod etc?
Duke Nukem 3D, Turok Dinosaur Hunter PC and Half Life 1 - for me is 3 best fps games of 90's. I love games with real weapons models, I try and collected it to HL1.
You can see videos here: https://forums.duke4...n-movies-style/
More guns mor fun HL games are still best moded game series. There is mod called brutal HL - shooting effects like DN3D when RPG hit enemy. Some guys of you can write, that nice remake can be only good on modern engine like example Unreal Engine 4. Honestly for me is it to ... modern... I hate new effects - blur motion, bloom, hdr and many more.

We differ greatly in what a remake should be. You want more of the same. Basically just new user maps. I want something shiny and different. A break away from the tired old same thing. A compromise I could agree with would be to at the very least get rid of the current monsters and all sound FX. Those are what I am tired of the most after all these years. Maybe pay homage to them with a small cameo appearance.

Well, my english is far from perfect, so may I express myself again: "AND in addition they create a new Duke game in the spirit of the original (not another DNF)"
I have a longer post in the grave now about this in another thread when I said I don't like shiny new modern games, but I don't insist to Build Engine's limited technology either. I would love to see something that genuinely has the spirit of Duke 3D, ie. actual levels with geometry and some nonlinearity, proper weapon selection, monsters that can be properly seen on the screen (and they look different to each other, and don't make you thinking "is this the enforcer now or just the liztroop"... but at the same time I'm in for proper 3D model and even true 3D engine. Just stick to the roots.
So no, not usermaps.

Lunatic Fringe and Tier Drops would be a perfect map to be remade in a game like Prey (2005)! That game have tons of unique tricks with it's D3 engine, that's lhe first game I thought about when I read your post. Too bad that Prey don't have much user-made content in general, so I'm probably a decade-plus late with my suggestion.

As to Duke Nukem 3D: I love it. A quarter of a Century later, and I'm still obsessing over this stupid game. I do feel 'played out' a lot of the time. I want something different. Serious Duke was great as a proof of concept, but I wanted to do something else with it, not just remake Duke 3D. New monsters, new enemies and situations. I love DN3D, but after 25 years, I really want something else now. Sadly, with Gearbox fixated on other things, it looks like fans will have to make their own sequel. It won't be Duke Nukem 3D with funky graphics, it will be it's own thing, and that is as it should be. That is if they can get enough people in one area to agree to a work schedule for more than a month or two. I have neither the time or the inclination to do so, though I have messed around with Unreal here and there.
@Nfsfan83 - From what we can see now, Gearbox won't pursue you as long as you don't try to present your work as official and/or try to make money from it. Serious Duke 3D has been motoring on fine for years and as far as I know, nobody has bothered them.
That link isn't working. I 'replied' to get the full link. Lol, it's our Hollywood Holocaust Rethinked mod!

Do you even understand what the word remake means? LMAO. A remake IS more of the same. Sounds like you want a sequel.

verb
/rēˈmāk/
make (something) again or differently.
But yeah, sequel could also describe what I would want.

For instance. A remake of the movie "The Blob" was made. But it had different actors, different props, different locales, different dialog, some different plot changes, different etc....But same overall story. Yet it is still considered a remake. Remakes can be different. Your definition of remake seems to be copy or clone. Go back to school.

Is it only work on polymer mode?
I see You guys add many high poly models but even if models will be max from Q3 models it is all what I need.
When I was making tracks for NFS4 example L.A I spend many hours in street google view to catch screens etc My point is... like in Rethinked mod that was added many things to change a little places to more real, that is only what Duke with HRP and Eduke32 need.
I have many nice ideas but I completly green in 3D modeling. I mean I can make simple box thats all but is it crap.
First think, when I yesterday watch YT Rethinked mod I thougt about this inspiration:
Cinema from Last Action Hero
l'Orpheum of Los is inside shoots
https://www.silversc...lastaction.html
It fit to Duke as hell:
front
Inside:
Imagine how many action and mess can be here
https://www.historic...os-Angeles.aspx
https://www.emporis....-angeles-ca-usa
Like in Black Mesa, make places bigger and better
PS. Find find the differences between Gabe from Valve and Randy from gearbox?
Randy is a**hole Gabe allow bring back to life HL mod called Black Mesa

In this hellish world full of regrettable mistakes, I would expect a cheap cash grab by gearbox trying to ape the success of Doom Eternal/Borderlands 3, with the story/dialogue written by the writers of Borderlands 3 and the game censored and toned down to oblivion. Also I expect a hell lot of political activism. So basically a cheapo Nu Doom with a Borderlands 3 coat of paint.
So in summary:
I don't want it. At least, not now.

It was designed to work in Polymer. You can run it in Polymost, but it will be a disaster. The whole design brief was "How far can you push Polymer to look like Unreal?" At the time, we were under the impression that Gearbox would sue you if you used something else. This turned out not to be the case. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have used Unreal. Eduke is fa good port, but polymer has loads of issues and if you want something that is like unreal, then use unreal. The only real issue with unreal is that all the engine-side stuff you need to set up first. Modding an existing game, like Cataclysm did for Half Life, is good in that you get all the shooting and game mechanics for free. Otherwise you have to set them up from scratch. Writing enemy AI is a bitch, so I've been told. Something like Cataclysm, but updated to Source or Source 2 would be great (Black Mesa TC?). Failing that, Serious Duke 3D, which is OK on the Serious Sam engine, but the engine still looks good, you have all your game mechanics already set up with a 'Duke' look and feel. You could take that and start making your own levels right away and not have to spend ages TCing your target platform. It would all depend on what the team was comfortable doing, how many people they had and what those people's expertise was.
If we still had a modelling crew, it would be a lot easier. Sadly they have all gone, or there is history between them so that they don't want to work together anymore.
You could do it all in EDuke and Polymost. There is nothing to stop anyone from using Polymost and doing all this stuff in EDuke. You'd need to be carefull about your art style, but it's not impossible. I personally think you'd be better off using something else, but that is JMHO.

Feel free to use anything we included in HHR. It was supposed to help kickstart something like you are describing anyway. I uploaded a lot of the source files to github so you can export FBXs with bones from Blender for use in your target engine.

Yeah, we came up with several ideas to expand out the original Hollywood Hollocaust level, including a subway, a crashed spaceship and other stuff. Started with a copy of the original HH map, and found out that we couldn't really expand it too much without having to start from scratch.
The thing with the HRP was that it was supposed to be a straight recreation of DN3D. Expanding on the original game wasn't what it was about, though again, there is nothing to stop you from creating a new project in EDuke32, using HRP assets as a base and building something new like you described.

*snip*
All that looks great and would be a good project for a mod. You just need to get people together and start making it. A Black Mesa TC? Unreal project? A mapping project for Serious Duke 3D? Any of these are possible. The problem is that everyone here has gone through too much BS to care any more. The others have left and haven't come back. Everyone outside thinks that they are going to get a C&D if they start something. Good luck!

So If remake like all new things is impossible. We must improve DN3D with HRP best as can possible. I need few talented people to do it ( I can make textures )
DN3D 2021
First for me is biggest priority is:
Add more weapons two versions - sprites and 3D models:
Key 2: Colt 1911 double (replace glock), Desert Eagle Silver, Double Mac-10 (ammo for Colt 1911)
Key 3. Spas 12 (with 2 mode - pump and automatic like real),
Key 4. M16M203 (alternate shoot granade), M60 and Minigun (Predator version with handle) - all this same ammo 5,56 mm
Key 5. RPG, AT4 and M202 (shoot one be one, all 4 rockets), Grande Launcher like in Shadow Warrior
or Duke N64 but real MM1 Hawk model
Panzerfaust 3 with Duke Nuclar Logo on rocket and with expolosion effects big Nuke mushroom !!!
Key 9. Half Life satchel charge
Key 0: Flamthrower M2
We can use many mode what I collect for HL and OP4. Many of these models only need one sreen shoot
with nice position like RPH, M60 etc
What do You guys think? I love cool weapons models in game. Real models

No. What I said was that you can do whatever you want.
People thought they'd get C&D'd, that looks not to be a problem now. Serious Duke 3D hasn't had any problems (that they told me about anyway).
#28 Posted 26 November 2020 - 11:32 AM
Ps. What mean C&D'? copyright and delete?
