Linux Insta-Crash "Sound startup error: SDL Mixer initialization failed."

I'm trying to run EDuke32 on Ubuntu, but it always crashes with some warning about the SDL Mixer initialization. I installed all the dependencies that the wiki told me to.

Does it work when you run it as root? If so, it's a permission problem with your sound devices. Are you in the 'audio' group?

I've tried all of your suggestions, but it still does not work. There is a different message, however.
Would that have anything to do with running OSS instead of ALSA? I'm not sure if that's even the case.

Try installing libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio and libsdl-mixer1.2 for starters.

Both are already installed and the newest version. For reference, ZDoom works perfectly with sound and music.

Just offhand, did you build the package/binaries yourself?
