Jesse Petrilla's Duke3D standalone mods  "Were they officially sanctioned by 3DR?"

I've known about the three stand-alone Build engine games (Quest For Al-Qa'eda, Quest For Hussein, and Plunder & Pillage) for quite a while, although I only played P&P. But today I decided to do some proper research and dug up the original pages of these games:
http://www.questforhussein.com/
Terror X: QFA

I've always assumed these were just some "standalone mods" that just went under the radar but the second site contains a statement:

Permission to distribute freely given by 3d Realms Entertainment. 20020204

Number of downloads: 33
Is it true? Does anyone know anything about it?

I don't know anything more about this, but wasn't at least one of them sold, and not just distributed freely though?

Thank God for Jesse Petrilla.

He's a somewhat prominent public figure, his social media and website are a touch abandoned but he might be easy to contact.

I just learned something new about Duke's history. I always thought Quest For Al Qaeda/Hussein were just some dumb mods. Apparently, Jesse Petrilla is a total chad in real life.

They're not the greatest but are fun for the time period they were released I think, and the maps have rather unique themes, not many maps set in the middle east. Plunder and Pillage showed promise but even calling it a demo is pushing it.

It gets even more interesting apparently:

(not to be confused with the cancelled Larry Laffer: The Quest for Bush fangame)

UPD: It turns out (according to this blog at least) that Quest for Saddam is a different game with the same premise, running on a true 3D engine this time (Pie in the Sky? can't tell for sure).

I played a little of the 2 later games but never Pillage and Plunder. I just downloaded it and without much fuss have it running under Eduke32. I haven't played it long enough to find if all the gameplay has remained intact. The log shows a few of the usual "else" and "if" warnings but nothing major. Duke3D.GRP not needed to play.

I remember when this guy appeared on the news after 9/11, along with a short segment featuring the flash animation from Newgrounds.com:

https://www.newgroun...rtal/view/33641

One thing I do remember from that news segment was he briefly talked about a game in a "new" "fully 3d" engine. I don't know what that ended up being, though. I don't know if that was Quest For Saddam, it seemed to be some kind of a fantasy game or something,. Reminded me of the Unreal tech demo.

Looks interesting, sadly none of these links have working downloads. Only links from article seems to work but that captcha have a lot of wrong/expired numbers.

I probably shouldn't be advertising this site (no, it's not abandonware; it just ripped off the content from another site I know) but you can get Petrilla's games from here. Note that the ZIP file names are not original, but the archives themselves are likely unaltered.

Just for the sake of historical reference, here's an interview that DOS Games Archive did with Petrilla back in 2002:

And the MSNBC feature about him:

I'm still occasionally working on the updating of Jesse's Pillage and Plunder mod. Some new textures, 3d models, voices, minor map expansions, and of course my usual Polymer renderer that I can't live without. All 3 maps are still rather short so I guess it will continue to be demo length.

Outstanding! I'd love to play it. So cool to see someone revive my old game. How can I download it?
