Daikatana is such a diamond in the rough. I really think there's a good game hidden in there somewhere.

I can't help but wonder what's left to do for 500K or even 1 mil if he gets that far.

Sure there's an ocean of crap out there but I'm not sure how many more high-profile failures there are (that intersect with Civvie's interests anyway).

Romero have never been thinking about doing a proper remake (one that would reach the original ambitions at least) ?

I would like to try the game myself, but seems there is no proper release on GOG, Steam,etc... let alone with multilanguage translation/dubbing

Last year I got fooled into thinking that this was unfairly judged at launch because of the marketing and that they'd definitely ironed out whatever kinks the game originally had with fan made patches. Boy, was I in for a surprise...

For GOG I saw it (only english supported), but for Steam it seems its region specific (not france anyway) !

When I look at the graphics and voices of the game, I immediatly think about Deus Ex...

Its interesting to think about. He's covered so many infamous FPS games already there isn't too much left that would be standouts. Maybe he will do a video on a popular game instead? Maybe 500k for Deus Ex? Perfect Dark or Goldeneye? Half-Life?

He also got to 200k pretty fast since the DNF video.

All praise Civvie, for he has died, multiple times, for our sins.

Either he will make the updated Hunt Down the Freeman (hope he will stand longer than Tyler MacVicker) or Deus Ex Invisible War... its my bet

Well, I think civvie is not used to micro gestion (let alone with the fps micro gestion), if you have played and mastered Half-Life and Deus Ex you have already gone through these hassles (the difference is they can use stairs but no scales)

Micro management is death to a fast FPS though. Half Life is boring. Deus Ex has fast paced moments, perfectly blending FPS and RPG. Daikatana is how not to do it all.

THIS. 14 levels trying to escape a building. No game-play variance until you get to Xen. Definitely something I want to do for 10 hours.

I still cant quite understand what lead to design of first episode. Who was mastermind behind it? Romero himself so nobody dared to question its design? I mean really, you have chosen dystopian futuristic Japan as setting. But instead of giving us asian flavoured cyberpunk feel, we get what? Awful dirty swamps and sewers, empty industrail hallways and generic labs? And half of its enemy roster is almost insulting. Even if I apply suspension of disbelief for not wondering about who would consider cybernetically upgrading insects and lizards as good idea. Why would you consider fighting them enjoyable and worthy?
If you skip first episode and disable companions it is actaully quite bearable game, if bit average.

I hate, HATE, allied npcs in fps, they WILL get stuck, most of the time in that one way you have to go and either you can't kill them or killing them fails the "mission", or they get stuck in some random thing and you need them to progress.
and in combat they can't seem to hit the broadside of a Death Star, they get in your way and get you killed. No thanks, i rather take on the enemy army by myself. is less painful.

Having played the German version of Daikatana, I used to think that the robotic animals in the first episode were just censorship taken to a new level. It wasn't uncommon that human enemies would be turned into robots for German releases (Command & Conquer, Half-Life, Soldier of Fortune 2) back then, and they did in fact turn all of the human enemies in the first episode of Daikatana into robots in the German version. Years later, I saw videos of the English version and realized that the "animals" weren't censored at all and were actually supposed to be robots or cyberanimals.

Oddly enough, I think that the human enemies in the later episodes were left uncensored (except for the missing blood and gibbing effects). I take this as a sign that virtually nobody played anything beyond the first episode back in 2000. I'm pretty sure I didn't make it very far when I first bought the game. I know I played through the entire game once, but that would have been about a decade later and I honestly don't remember if I played the regular German version or if I was using a blood patch to restore the gore as well as the original character models and skins.

Just my perception of what could have happened, but I feel from Romero's approach to design they had spent most of their time building the cool parts of the game, focusing on the time travel. Maybe they didn't quite figure out how to start the game and tie everything together. The first episode feels incredibly rushed, and that would explain the uninspired environments.

I just realized. In spite of its overall marketing, game is very lacking in its asian theme/mood. Except of obviously its titular main weapon, few lenghty boring cutscenes and one level in last episode, there is nothing at all.

To Lazy Dog:
You should give Star Wars Republic Commando try sometime. ;)

What about Bioshock Infinite and Last of Us where your allied NPC isn't ever really in danger, never ruins your stealth, and will provide stuff for you, whether its killing an enemy or giving you ammo?

I wonder... Does the retail version work on Win 7 64 ? are the multilanguage versions fully translated/dubbed ? Does the respective patch (especially 1.3) mess with multilanguage settings/features ?

If they can't die, don't ruin stealth, and don't get on my way, sure, they can come, if i need them for plot reasons. If they are optional, i'm going solo.

Now that I think about it, Half-Life isn't as much an FPS as it is an adventure game with FPS mechanics. Totally different story, although the two are very close in some aspects.

I tend to think of Hexen in the same way, an adventure game with first-person combat and puzzles, not quite Lara Croft but much closer to that than Doom or Heretic.

Have you ever played Command & Conquer: Renegade? Allied NPCs at their worst IMO (I'm in a sorta love-hate relationship with this game). No way to give orders to them at all. They run a predefined path that invariably gets them in thick enemy fire so you have to outrun them and take it first, then hoping that they will stand still for a little while as you scour a cleared area for useful supplies. Oh, and if/when they get under fire they just stand there caught in a perpetual pain animation cycle, not even trying to use the powerful weapon(s) they have against enemies. One mission where you need to escort Mobius out of an underground complex is especially nasty, thankfully also rather short.

As for Daikatana, I only played the demo, and that was some time ago (ca. 2010-2012), but generally I had a good impression overall. It has the first level, one Greek level and one Norse one which I did not have the patience to complete. The first level is indeed incredibly confusing and hard, but not too hard to deter me from completing it. The save system made it unnecessarily more hard than what could have been, even with the same level of design. The Greek level was neat, but I generally have a soft spot for the Ancient Greece theme, which is not really well explored in FPS games. The design of the Norse level seemed nice too but I did not bother to complete it as said above.

I know a game which is neat when it comes to sidekicks (but not an fps) : The Bureau: XCOM Declassified ... micro gestion at its best, they don't use perks or focus ennemies on they own, but at least they take care of themselves and the others (including you when you are in big troubles)

I don't know if true multilanguage versions of Daikatana even exist. I only have the German CD release (actually a "SAT.1 games" budget release) and the GOG version (English only). The German version has German voice acting, subtitles and menus.

In case you haven't checked them out, he has one video for each Duke 3D episode amongst many others on, say, most installments of the Doom franchise, Quake and various classic FPS's, always with funny moments, clever editing and caustic commentary. I normally have a hard time with 'YouTube people' and their forced tones but here the guy is just smooth and witty, I regularly find myself watching his videos on games I've never even played just for the laughs and the criticism. (I don't know about the song but I reckon you could always just ask via a message or comment)
