Eh, I mean I see your point, but I wouldn't wanna live under a monarchy either. The problem is one of scale. There was a documentary I once saw that claimed that vengeful gods appeared in the historical record once cities reached 100 000 inhabitants for the first time (Edit:
was off by a zero). They uncovered some ruins that had a red eye painted everywhere, as if to signal that people are watching even as you're not being directly observed. God is a method of control through brainwashing. And it makes perfect sense, right, but I don't wanna be one of those plebs who has to be kept in control. I don't think you're a man if you do.
But being one among equals is only possible so long as people can be kept in check through direct observation, and confrontation if needed. Also goes back to what I said about the family unit being the basis for the broader society. We all practice a limited form of communism within our families. We share with the ones we love and we strive for some kind of equality. The problem is when you have to share with people you don't know or don't care to know, especially if you're compelled by a government you didn't elect or have no reasonable way of communicating with. I don't mind paying a tax or helping out others with services/use of property if I know them and like them, and it's out of my own free will. But it's impossible to know everyone in a giant metropolis.
So that's when AI algorithms and vast security systems come into play. If we no longer believe in a god, then it becomes necessary to invent one (Deus Ex style). Fuck that too!
