Kaiser's working on one, hopefully it will see the light of day relatively soon.

Will it be a port, or another by-sight remake?

This is all I know:
https://twitter.com/...453896123109376

He calls it "Rise of the Triad EX" so KEX engine for sure but since the game's open source afaik I don't think he'd start from scratch here... so no chance for a Blood FS fuckup here hopefully.

I personnally prefer the remake... the original is kinda ugly, bland, borring and teddious to play for me !

I disagree, but respect your opinion (I had some fun with the remake too) ether away I think it's worth giving another spin

Another fun video. He did miss a few things, like at the end you don't need to rocket jump to get the secret area with the rest of the Oscuro eggs. There's a Mercury powerup you can get. Still overall great, and hope he does EROTT at some point.

Per Kaiser on Twitter, "its a pretty straight forward port. Basically ROTT running on its own dedicated thread while Kex acts as the server/frontend, providing only input events and updating the software buffer whenever the game requests it."

Kaiser posted some early footage here, with the disclaimer that a lot of stuff is currently kinda busted.

Judging by the footage, it's already far superior to WinROTT-GL.

So somewhat like what ICD is doing with his Unity port of Build?

Still I'd like to see a more traditional source port aimed at modern hardware.

Since the topic of source ports came up: I've just tried a beta / test version of Kaiser's port and it's very promising (if you're on the KEX Discord there's a link there). It's unfinished but as far as I can tell it's already accurate to the original game and man it just looks and plays so much better than WinROTTGL ever fucking did. It's going to be a bare bones port I guess because it's a small side project but it's going to be the best ROTT port for sure (and chances are it will be open source so fans will be able to expand it).

Is he going to charge for that or will it be for free? A proper ROTT port is indeed long overdue. I guess I would also pay if it's better than what we have now.

I'm sure it's going to be free, it's not an "official" port and not a project for Nightdive, just your usual fanmade source port.

By KEX Discord, do u mean the Nightdive studios Discord? I wasn't able to find the link there. Would u mind providing the link for it.

Oh no, the Nightdive Discord server is a useless shitshow, there is a separate one for KEX:

Has anyone here managed to compile some of the up-to-date ports like rottexpr?

LTCHIPS has compiled this for Windows. Please see below:

Great to have more active ports. This one plays quite well for such an early stage.

BTW, Rott94 just added Windows binnaries but it has no sound using those binnaries and it doesn't allow changing resolutions.

LTCHIPS just released the first update to his Rise of the Triad port rottexpr.

v0.01, 2021-01-19:

  • Fixed bug where mouse range of motion was limited in windowed mode
  • Greatly increased range of mouse sensitivity scale
  • Fixed a crash that would occur sometimes when using the map screen due to improperly terminated strings
  • Implemented max hud size to ensure over/under scaling the hud isn't possible

Does not work in my case, tried all the different executables.

I also liked the remake however there was something going on with the perspective that always gave me nausea every time I play. I suspect it was the proportions of the level in regards of height between the floor and roof maybe.

Don't take too much stock about my opinion on this though. I am very sensitive in regards to visual changes in games. below 100 fov I get really dizzy after a while and start barfing all over the place.

It is unfortunate that the executables do not throw any error message about missing files. Besides the usual required suspects of files to add to the port, make sure to add Remote1.rts. See the listings below.

Rise of the Triad (Commercial version)

Required files:
  • SDL2.dll
  • SDL2_mixer.dll
  • Rott.exe (commercial)
  • DARKWAR.WAD (textures, sprites, sounds)
  • DARKWAR.RTL (singleplayer levels)
  • REMOTE1.RTS (remote taunt sounds)

Optional files:
  • DARKWAR.RTC (multiplayer levels)
  • DEMO1_3.DMO (recorded demo)
  • DEMO2_3.DMO (recorded demo)
  • DEMO3_3.DMO (recorded demo)
  • DEMO4_3.DMO (recorded demo)

Rise of the Triad (Shareware version)

Required files:
  • SDL2.dll
  • SDL2_mixer.dll
  • Rott.exe (shareware)
  • HUNTBGIN.WAD (textures, sprites, sounds)
  • HUNTBGIN.RTL (singleplayer levels)
  • REMOTE1.RTS (remote taunt sounds)

Optional files:
  • HUNTBGIN.RTC (multiplayer levels)
  • DEMO1_3.DMO (recorded demo)
  • DEMO2_3.DMO (recorded demo)
  • DEMO3_3.DMO (recorded demo)

To this I will add that when a previous release was discussed and I tried it out, I made the mistake of putting the port files (I think it was rottexpr, not the other new one) simply into the DOS installation of the shareware version, and the port did not like the DOS configuration file so it would not work -- again, no error messages at all. Turns out it writes its own config file with the same name but different contents. So you just copy the listed files into a new folder with the port files and you'll be fine.
