I was doing some snooping and noted Ion Fury is compiled with GCC 8.1.0 vs GCC 7.2.0 for EDuke32 builds on synthesis.
I didn't really see any improvement in FPS compiling with GCC 9.1.0 and -Ofast. Is there any reason for the newer toolchain used for Ion Fury?

Any benefits to compiling with newer toolchain than synthesis builds?

Not everything in life is a conscious decision. In this case it is because the Fury build you see was compiled on a local MSYS2 install for convenience instead of the toolchain installed as part of Synthesis.
