The NEW online store is not up yet, buy when it is up, please buy as much as possible I will say to support 3DR and hopefully that will kick the development of DNF back up.

Hey gang..

While I don't work at 3DR anymore, I did participate in what I'm about to talk about before I walked out the door. The project will be finished by Bryan Turner (who is still at 3DR for the time being), but I was given the OK to talk about this.

As I've kind of hinted at in other forum posts, there is a big update coming for the 3D Realms Online Store. For the last two days I worked at 3DR, I did nothing more than one final major remaster of the product line. I took all the files that we were selling as downloadable items and remastered them. I put DOSBox wrappers around them. This is probably less of an issue for folks on these forums, but the majority of tech queries we got were from people who had zero idea on how to install a DOS program, much less run it. So they all got DOSBox wrappers.

But it didn't stop there. I took all the games that we sold as CD media only, and created downloadable installs for them, too. That includes Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Death Rally, & Terminal Velocity. So these games will be available in our store.

But it didn't stop there, either. I also hit some other games. We will be selling Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project as a download for the first time, and we will also be selling something we have not sold in several years now. BALLS OF STEEL! This is basically every game that we can still sell that hasn't been released as freeware. They'll all be available in the new store update that is coming.

But I saved the best for last. Long time 3DR forum members will remember me talking about a ROTT CD master that never got made. It was to combine the Site License ROTT CD with the EROTT CD, as well as a pile of user created things. Well, that CD never got pressed, and the version we've sold in the store for awhile was a lesser version. NOT NOW! This new ROTT download (which is 48.3Mb) has everything you can think of. It's every single stinkin thing that Apogee ever released for ROTT back in the day. It also includes a pile of user created things. Also, given my personal love for ROTT, I tossed in a few surprises for people who buy that.

Redoing the product line with a DOSBox wrapper, as well as bringing back and/or adding several things to the online store was my final act as an actual employee of 3DR. I saved ROTT for last. It was mastered between about 6:40PM and 8:15PM Central time on Friday May 22nd.

Now the part I have to say I don't know is when. It's supposed to be this week, but I can't tell you exactly when - and I won't be involved with the actual launch, either. My part in all this was to remaster the product line. That was quite a challenge, as I had to learn a new install program, go over the whole product line, make sure everything was there, build the installs, test them - it was QUITE the whirlwind, I tell you. :)

These downloads come with those PDF manuals and the hint sheets (where available), as well as with Windows icons, it's all quite nice. It was a freakin whirlwind for me to get 26 game files remastered. I did one and a half on Thursday (mostly to get the structure right, and to learn the install program), and did the remaining 23 and a half on Friday. Man, that was one long day. But it was my last, and I've always considered game installs my baby, so I'm glad I got to do this one final time, and make the installs something nice.

The complete list of stuff that will be available for sale through the new 3D Realms store site update is:

Balls of Steel
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Commander Keen Galaxy
Commander Keen Vorticons
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Crystal Caves
Death Rally
Duke Nukum
Duke Nukem II
Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
Hocus Pocus
Math Rescue
Monster Bash
Mystic Towers
Paganitzu
Planet Strike
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Realms of Chaos
Rise of the Triad (or as I call it, Ultimate ROTT)
Secret Agent
Shadow Warrior
Terminal Velocity
Wacky Wheels
Wolfenstein 3D
Word Rescue

I have no idea what the pricing on this stuff will be, so don't ask. That was all stuff handled this week, after I've left. I was just given permission to talk about the remastering stuff and that it will be available shortly.

This will be in a new store - Yahoo store won't be active anymore for new sales once the new stuff goes up. But at this point, you're probably better off waiting for the new store downloads. :D

From a technical standpoint, I used the Inno Install program, which uses LZMA compression routines, so things are packed more efficiently. This is an in issue as I'm including DOSBox with every install, too. :D

That is cool. If I had money, I'd buy ROTT since I never played more than the Shareware and have always been a little curious...

Let's give them a shitload of money.

If Joe included a package with Shadow Warrior's music then I would pay like 20 bucks for it.

I realize that downloading these game is illegal, but if you're worried about the music so much, there are torrents where you can get them. Then you can just play these CDA-Tracks in WMP or something while you play. SWP has very limited support for .Ogg's.

What the hell is ROTT? Am I not in the loop or something?

Out of all those games I would probably buy Balls of Steel, or Manhattan project. It looks like they are trying to get as much money as possible out of this, the question is... why.
[insert CONSPIRACY theory here].

It's most likely to keep the lights on, or to just get money in general.

Rise of the Triad blew my mind when it came out. Especially with EKG mode turned on....

They did a lot of cool stuff with that game that was new for FPS games, like akimbo pistols and weapon slotting. The variety of missile launchers was really cool too. I loved the flamewall most of all. Watching enemies collapsing into a pile of charred bones FTW!

Was never a fan of ROTT, but I'm certainly going to pay for Duke3D and DukeMP when it opens... again... Gotta love us collecting fanboys ^^

ROTT is good fun.
Gibbing = Awesome :)
I've never played through the game, just played bits of it.

Well yes, gibbing is awesome (the only reason Quake Live is any bad at all is because no blood or gibbing after all). Though that's just not enough for me to buy it. :) Then I'd rather buy Hocus Pocus, loved that game when I was a kid. ^^

Putting a DOSBOX wrapper to run the games is just about the first smart move 3dRealms has made for the games. I see on the Net people all the time who are defeated by trying to set up and run a game in DOSBOX. It's not DOSBOX's fault...it's a great program and God's Gift to Gamers, but it does assume a basic famliairty with DOS and a lot of people don't have that nowdays. People are just thrown by having to type in a set of commands. If you are used to simple DOS commands DOSBOX is easy to set up, but if you are not you are thrown for a loop.
IMHO this would have happened anyway since a whole new generation who have never seen a C prompt has grown up since Duke Nuke 3d Came out, and this is a nice way to introduce them to DUke who many of them know only by name and as the hero of that game that never came out.
I am will definently get the ROTT set if the price is reasonable.

BUT 3dRealms is going ahead with this mainly to show there are still in business. There is no freaking way they will raise more then a few hundred thousand dollars with this, and they need at least FIve Million to finish DNF..providing they are telling us the truth, of which, sadly, there is good reason to doubt considering 3dRealms record on the accuracy of their infor about DNF.....

I used to play Blake Stone at work before I had ever played Doom (and Dune 2 which I completed at work) and when I bought a 486 I played ROTT a lot but in the end I quit because of all the stupid jumping, that really annoyed me. I liked the atmosphere and the attention to detail. Terminal Velocity was another of my favourites. I loved flying into a hole in the ground after zooming around in 3D. Gameplay was jaw dropping (especially after upgrading from an Amiga 500).

I really hope George gets this game back on track and doesn't restart it if he gets the funds to complete it. Gamplay > Graphics.

I don't think this will bring in much revenue at all. The only people who will buy them will be nostalgia fans. Kids today don't even like films from the last century, never mind games. If I ever have a kid, his first computer will be a ZX Spectrum or a C64, not because I'm mean, its just so he/she/it learns that gameplay comes first.

Another good game from around that time (simple but fun) was Abuse. Anyone remember that?

Oh yeah and a bit later the STILL amazing Carmageddon (1&2).

Poor kid. I suppose you're also gonna rape him up the ass since the day he is born, not because you're mean, but because he's gotta learn that obedience to parents comes first.

Well no as that's not a game or stuff that should be made 'fun' of. Is that what happened to you, were you raped as a child? Didn't the single player level you made for Prey have child porn references in it? I suppose seeing the words Kids and Abuse in the same post triggered some stimuli sub-consciously. Time for therapy Altered Reality.

I see where you get your name from now - it's a description of what's right and wrong as you see it.

Yeah, troll on, man! Ad hominem attack FTW! This is what trolls do when they are hopelessly wrong, they start attacking their opponent and calling him crazy.

You started the trolling. I made a post about games. Ad hominem was used by yourself first. I simply mirrored your strange attack on myself and added some spice to piss you off.

Without taking sides, I must say the idea of "If I ever have a kid, his first computer will be a ZX Spectrum or a C64 " is completely pathetic, and rather then it showing how intellectual you are, it shows how dumb you are and how terrible a father you will be. I am glad my kids when they come, planning to have them later this year or early coming year, will start with with a second hand Core i7 with minimum 12G Ram and a nVidia GTx300 minimum to start with.

Perhaps you'd like to know that its first language will be C++.

I hear the requirements for educational games are fairly steep these days.

If anything is pathetic then it's people telling other people how they should live their life or how they should raise their children.

Bickering idiots do that.
