Here's another WIP game on the Doom engine I forgot about, called Hedon:

Came out in March:

https://store.steamp.../1072150/Hedon/

Also available from here for free (legally): https://zanthebonebr...r.itch.io/hedon

Developer says he doesn't consider it a Doom mod anymore, it's just using the GZDoom engine. Artwork is all original, and soundtrack by Alexander Brandon caught my attention immediately...

Alexander Brandon?

Sign me the freak up.

EDIT: Oh boy is it ever! These guys are getting my money.

The almost total lack of wall shading is unacceptable.

I'm kind of the weird one. I've sort of been watching Hedon since its inception, and it just looks so off-putting to me. I can't put my finger on it, but I think it's the overall aesthetics. The palette, the theming, I'm not really even that big of a fan of the main heroine's design... All of it just kinda pushes me away.

I really don't care. I just want to reward Alexander Brandon's music. If there was a soundtrack-only option I'd buy that instead.

Yea well, since it was free I gave it a shot and I gotta agree. The first level I spent about 30 minutes just running around "exploring" and getting lost without a single enemy (for real) and the graphics didn't help. At first it doesn't look so bad, but when you have to focus on the game world in order to spot keys/pathways to progress, it can become a headache, especially as there's very little shading and everything sort of blends into one thing.

As a side note, the dev is a furry who draws porn and even sells a body pillow of the protagonist, so now I can't go back to the game without feeling kinda filthy about the whole thing.

Edit: Brandon apparently had nothing to do with this either, the author simply bought rights to a few of his tracks. The way it's advertised makes it seem like there was a collaboration, which isn't the case. I got bamboozled.

And tbh, I hoped this would be the case.

From the 26 music tracks included with the game "Hedon", only 6 were actually composed by Alexander Brandon many years ago (10+ years). Some of these tunes were taken from the good old game "Unreal", there's no new stuff to be found here. So save your money if you're only in for the music by Alex.

It seems that the developer of Nightmare Reaper has taken the criticism of the colours and general visual noise onboard:

Taking the Serious Sam approach when it comes to options, I see. Fair enough.

I feel like I'm gonna have to unsub from this guy. Massive hyperbole always, SIGIL is "really disappointing" and then thinks this shit looks really cool? "Look cool" is exactly what it doesn't. Maybe it's cool to play, but these graphics are literally the worst I've seen in anything trying to be a commercial product. I got a headache just from watching the video.

At least he said that the copy of the game was given to him by developer.

^Ugh. That's why I don't feel like I really like this "retro shooter" thing. Games like Dusk, Hedon and this one took the whole idea of "pixelated graphics" to the extreme! No color direction et all, just a garbage mash-up of all what your pallete have.
The old DOS games was not THAT ugly! Even Shaw's Nightmare looks prettier than this (not to mention my own game, hehe). The only modern retro FPS game I enjoyed so far is Ion Maiden.

Project Warlock had nice art direction I thought. The guy hired an actual artist, so even though it's hideously pixelated, it's never annoying. The gameplay got boring near the end, but for the most part I found it a successful endeavor. Same with Dusk, although I recall when Yahtzee reviewed it, he thought if it had come out in the late 90s, it'd have gotten a 6.5 or something. He put it on the same level as Chasm or Blood 2. I love Chasm and enjoy Blood 2, though.

But yeah, Ion Maiden and Wrath might make this a fad worth remembering.

I almost missed it, but Amid Evil has finally come out of Early Access and now has all seven episodes unlocked. It's also 20% off on Steam and GOG right now.
NOW GO... and buy (if you haven't already)! 98% positive Steam reviews can't be wrong.

Just a warning to anyone who thinks is an actual retro title, it's technically very modern and requires a somewhat beefy computer.

Wouldn't say it requires a beefy computer though. Playing it fine on "Epic settings" with an i7 4710hq and GTX 850M 2gb DDR3.

Yeah well, I know some people still play their retro titles on some real potatoes. This gives me worse framerates than Dishonored 1.

I wouldn't be surprised if the game is on Unity engine.

None of the games can be considered "retro" shooters if you can't run it on at least WinXP...they actually cut half of their audience when they make games for the latest OS's.

Why should we care about this particular guy's opinion? Influencers suck.

Do any of the retro-style shooters run on really old hardware? I just assumed none of them did.

I don't have such an old machine, lol. I just get a lot of stuttering with this and my rig runs everything until about 2011 with medium to high settings. Yeah, that might be old to some people, but I mostly play oldies and I figured this was like Dusk and Ion Maiden, both of which ran well.

Since when do people who still use computers with WinXP have the money to buy games?

Eh, I do not know. It is just not the same without guns. I could never really get into games like Heretic and Ziggurat because of this. Also, rapid-fire wands just look silly to me.
