Hey MI, be sure to post a song with that band once you have something finalized. What kind of gear do you use for recording? Desktop software, modelling gear, real amps, etc? Got any gear porn to show off?

I certainly will. My gear is kind of old and suffers from lack of maintenance. For a long time I haven't used the stuff because I wasn't getting any work and didn't need to use it. Real life being what it is, my stuff just sat there. I have an old problem with my amp that requires putting cables into the effects loop ports (send/return) because there's some loose connection and even then you have to yank on one of the cords and secure it tightly for any sound to come out. I really needs to be looked at. I won't be using my amp for the recordings or show. We're going to another studio and not using my own equipment or anything. In the studio I'm going to use whatever he has and recommends. For live we're thinking of trying out renting Mesa Boogies and seeing how that goes. I'm also currently not even using my own guitar, but my buddy's (who's the primary songwriter for the band), since all the songs are in drop C and my guitars are only in drop D. So I'm using his Schector.

But as far as what my gear actually is, I've got:
-Peavey Bandit 112 "Transtube" amp (I'd love to use this live because I love the soudn, but it needs to get fixed)
-Boss GT-6 multi-effects pedal
-Digitech XP-100 pitch/wah pedal
-Ibanez RG420EX
-BC Rich Bich (I'll be using this one instead of the Schector once I get it set up properly for drop C because I miss my whammy bar and the Schector has a fixed bridge. Also had to replace a couple of the saddles and I'm not sure I did it right because now one string is higher off the fretboard than the others and I can't seem to fix it. Needs a professional touch)
-Takamine Acoustic Guitar (I need to get this setup as well, frets are buzzing all over the place)

Recording Gear/Software:
-AT2020 condenser mic
-Shure SM57 instr. dynamic mic (for my amp)
-Cakewalk "by Bandlab" (it's free now, but I was using it when it was still for sale and called Sonar)
-Reason 6
-iZotope Ozone 5 Mastering Plugin Suite
-Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 (I used this for the Mage's Initiation soundtrack)
-Lots of other misc plugins too many to list

I have photos somewhere.....I'll see about posting some when I get home.

I just finished recording a track today that I really wanted to show you. I buy worship songs from multitracks.com and re-record my own electric guitars. I want to be able to record studio-level electric guitar tracks in my own room, and I think I'm getting pretty good at it.

This song is "I Surrender" by Hillsong. There are 4 guitar parts and I re-recorded them all. I wish this forum allowed SoundCloud embeds. I can only share links.

Mix with electric guitars + keys, bass, and drums

Mix with just electric guitars

Sweet. I'll have to listen when I get home from work because I got no decent speakers here.

Here's a photo of my rig. You ain't playin' real electric guitar unless you have a vacuum tube amplifier that weighs 80 pounds. My guitar isn't in the photo, but it's a Suhr Classic T in white.

Spoiler

Go tube or go home :dukecigar:. Looks like you've got a decent setup there!

I'm going to be at PAX West this weekend in Seattle if anyone is going. I'll be hanging out all around but I'll also be at the Transolar Games booth Sunday afternoon handing out free Mage's Initiation OST sampler CDs (the CDs will be there either way but I'll be there myself Sunday afternoon).

Thank you, sir. Full Of Eyes is going to be a massive project and will take years to get out but it will be done.

I'm proud to announce (and on my birthday no less!) that I've been hired as lead composer for Summer Daze at Hero U, the second in Lori and Corey Cole's adventure/story/narrative/rpg Hero U series so far. This game will not feature RPG elements as it's a smaller title in between sequels, but future games will again. It's far more story-based and in the style of some dating sims, but Lori and Corey are known for their great storytelling and I think it's going to be something special. Lori and Corey Cole were the designers of the original Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory games by Sierra Online in the late 80s 90s. It's something of a dream to be working with them and I couldn't be happier. The game artist also drew up everybody on the team in in-game style avatars and made me a bard which is obviously perfect.

The game is currently being Kickstarted and it's already almost half funded with only 4 days into the campaign. Link below (with playable demo):

The Kickstarter for Summer Daze at Hero-U close just under an hour ago. We were worried for a while there but just yesterday alone we had $14k in pledges which spiked it right up and today we finished at $106,155 (our goal was $99,999). Made two stretch goals too, but fell short of the voice acting one. But hey, anything can happen. Anyway, we're all really happy it was successfully funded. :o

The game screenshots show text for the dialog. Are there plans to have voices play along with the lines or to eventually replace all the text? I have seen a few Voice Actor websites where the starting prices are quite low. You get a small number of words or lines for as little as $5-$15. So a character's voice for the whole game could be had for as little as $100-$200 depending on the amount of lines. Also , I'm sure somebody on the team must know a person with a little talent to do a voice just for fun ( free ) I'd give it a try. BTW, what was the proposed budget for VA, or is that not for public knowledge?

I don't know how much I can say. But the lead developers have a higher standard (being industry veterans) and want to have all the voice actors in the same studio at the same time to do voice recordings. The stretch goal amount for voice acting was $110,000 and we made ~$106,000. I think they may just go ahead with voice acting anyway since we were so close.

The text will not be going away. If voice acting is done the text will accompany it. Not sure if they'll make that a toggle to allow both or one or the other or not.

My band has our second single out Deaf Horizon:

We also went to the studio over the past couple months and recorded 4 more songs so coming new year we'll have an EP released hopefully in early January if not late January and then we're gonna start doing gigs. Exciting times!

I finished a new song last night. Just short and sweet but was nice to pick up the guitar(s) again after a while. Inspired a little by Mike Oldfield's 80s work, but also not really.

It has a strong Joe Satriani sound to it.

Nice, I never thought of it that way but I definitely take that as a high compliment. ;)

Some of his mellower songs with a prominent but smooth bass line and switching between a clean and distortion guitar tone are very close sound to your's. The buildup of the melody from simple to layered guitars and ending simple again. Satriani trademarks.
