Firaxis have rebooted the series, and Julian Gollop (the creator of the original series) is working on Phoenix Point with a gameplay taken from XCOM but with the game mechanics of the original games :

Yeah I'm looking forward to PP, I don't normally kickstart (or fig in this instance but whatever) stuff anymore but I made an exception for this. I had lots of fun with XCOM2 and even made a bunch of voicepacks for Duke, Lo Wang .etc so hopefully PP will turn out to be just as much fun.

Phoenix Point have been delayed, it will be released in exactly one year !
