Interceptor's Kickstarter Project: Rad Rodgers  "Funding Beings September 6th 2016"

Unreal Engine 4, KS starts September 6.

Quote

Frederik Schreiber, Creative Director on Rad Rodgers: “I grew up during the platformer’s glory days, with Mario, Sonic, Megaman, Castlevania, and Earthworm Jim. Back then a new platformer came out every month, each with different fun characters and twists. But now the genre is mostly abandoned, with rare standouts like Braid, and the puzzle-focused Limbo.”

Scott Miller, Founder of Apogee and 3D Realms: “Apogee used to rule the top ten PC shareware and sales charts in the early 90’s with our platformer releases, like Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Cosmo, and a dozen others. The idea of developing a similar style game with today’s tech is extremely appealing to me. So while the Apogee brand is under completely new management, we can still involve key talent at 3D Realms to co-produce Rad Rogers, and give Interceptor the right design guidance to ensure that the game lives up to the high standards of the platformers’ golden era.”

Jacob Østergaard, Lead Designer on Rad Rodgers: “To make sure Rad Rogers is not just a modern rehash of old-school platformers, we’re adding several super cool features never seen in a platformer, all designed to power-up the fun factor. First off, Rad’s console companion, Dusty, loves to break the fourth wall, talking about the game itself, and to the player! This often confuses Rad, but Rad just thinks Dusty has lost his marbles.”

It would be 100% better without those voice actors.

Wow, Interceptor actually made an interesting, entertaining trailer involving characters with personality. Let's hope Scott Miller isn't out of touch when he says that a platformer is extremely appealing to him. I don't think Interceptor can afford a 2nd flop.

Do they really need a kickstarter for it though? Sounds kind of desperate, along with the fact that this is the 2nd game by them in a row (and the complete sum of all of new 3DR's games) that features Jon st John as a voice actor for a main character.

Since when is the platformer genre mostly abandoned? There's an absurd number of Indie platformers coming out all the time on Steam now.

That said, this actually seems to stand out. I liked the trailer. I might even back this.

Uh oh, let's hope Interceptor doesn't mis-judge the market again, or make it 3x more expensive than it should be Posted Image

Looks all kinds of fun, actually. I just hope they don't screw themselves over with an unattainable price tag with the KS.

Trailer looks pretty cool. $50,000 or $100,000 seems like a reasonable goal, I might contribute $15 or so. Good to see they're improving as far as characters go, the art and animation look really nice too.

Bombshell probably bombed hard as fuck. I don't think anyone in my friends list on Steam owns it. Can't go against using Jon St. John though, I guess they have a good working relationship and he's pretty versatile as a voice actor.

Well, this sounds interesting and I might get it on release. I really miss good platformers which aren't hipster indie trash.

Hopefully it will be long enough, don't expect it to be longer or just on par with Raymen Legends, but still. And secrets with unlockables would be nice too.

I feel kinda bad they have to resort to making a Kickstarter. This Apogee approved game isn't doing too well -- https://www.kickstar...son-city-crisis

$175 in 6 days out of a $25,000 goal is just abysmal.

Considering I've never even heard of this, maybe it's down to the marketing department.

They only put out their first commercial game three years ago so if Bombshell failed maybe that was all their money gone? Troubled development with the whole Duke Nukem thing going on couldn't have helped much.

That Kickstarter is sponsored by Apogee LLC, they're an absolutely useless company. Remember how Duke Nukem Trilogy turned out? Yeah... I also read somewhere that Rise of the Triad was worked on for free and all the everything was paid for out of the developers pockets with their marketing guy paying for events and stuff. Only thing Apogee provided was the licence and deadlines for release. I didn't even know Apogee LLC still existed because they haven't done anything since Rise of the Triad.

I am getting more and more impressed with Interceptor's animation department.
Rise of the Triad's felt pretty stiff and basic
Bombshell's cutscenes had some good facial animation/body movement
This has some pretty great overly stylized cartoonish animation and it looks great.
Music is also pretty top notch too.

Is that the game for which crowdfunding only represents 5% of its funding?

Another use of crowdfunding that is far off its essence.

Game looks interesting.

Looks to me more like that's saying Kickstarter get a 5% cut of whatever is raised.

Looks really good, the fast movement speed for one makes it look a lot better than Rayman games etc, looks rad.

Gonna go ahead and say they learnt their lesson from that when it comes to the incredible amount of people who hated that crap..I think every review picked that out as being annoying as fuck, the patches for Bombshell removed most of that annoying shit and even the short trailer for this looks like it has more personality than that entire thing. IMO one-liners should be short and punchy to avoid repetitiveness. Same thing with the executions in that game they should have been fast like Doom reboots otherwise it kills the pace of the game. That's why I'm pretty sure they did no outside playtesting with anyone who was brutally honest and were in a rush to get it out. If they gave me that game for an hour before release I would have torn that shit to shreds because it's fucking terrible.

I like the look of Rad Rodgers though and will probably contribute a few dollars towards it. Good to see the quality of Interceptors games is improving. Rise of the Triad was a pretty basic blast, Bombshells UI, animations and the game overall felt like it had a much higher production value and despite the game itself being rather mediocre you could tell they were improving as developers as far as the systems in the game functioned and the game looked. Rad Rodgers looks really cool, the animation and art style is really nice and I like that Conker style cute kid friendly world crossed with adult humor but I don't think there'll be a big shit monster in this that sings opera. :D

Did they really have to make it look so bland? It doesn't attract any attention. If someone sees a random screenshot of it, there's nothing that says "you must buy this because it's not your usual platformer".

I wish they'd relaunch Blake Stone instead.

Though I'd been aware of this project for quite some time, this is the first time I'm actually seeing it in motion. I think it looks great.

Does anyb0dy know if it has aiming with mouse?

From the trailer itt often looks as if he is shooting in any direction, but I don't see a crosshair.

Hi guys!
Thank you for all the comments.
Even though it's not announced yet (Tuesday), we're crazy nervous and excited at the office. We've been working our butts off preparing everything for the reveal. I really appreciate the comments.

To answer the last question - Yes, it does play with Keyboard/Mouse.
If you've played Abuse you know what to expect.

On the controller I prefer playing the game using the Dpad (Megaman style) rather than using the analogue sticks. Classic Megaman style. It's crazy fast and extremely precise. The way it should be :D

I am absolutely in love with the animation here and the tree gag has me giggling each time I see it.

Getting a Commander Keen, meets Bio Menace, meets Conker vibe here. Pretty good.

The "kiddie" art style doesn't really appeal to me, but I'll give the devil his due. What gameplay they showed looked decent.
