I was feeling bored so popped by to catch up with what if anything was happening post Duke Nukem Forever and, lo, by the mysterious forces of the universe my login worked. Oh, my. What a surprise.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo anyway. What's to talk about which hasn't already been talked about? Ummm. Cosplay? Yeeeeeah. I had a makeover and, yah know, I have this habit of going too far. I updated my avatar photo with a Duke Nuken inspired outfit. Red top and blue denim. Am I, like, Dukey enough for this forum or do you think I should tone it down?

BUT ENOUGH OF ME!

How were you inspired? How did Duke Nukem influence you? What crazy days are ahead or have we seen the last of Duke Nukem?

Who? Me?!? Oh, a total nobody. I wouldn't cause a ripple. Nope. No sirrrreeeeeee. Not me. Glassy smooth.

I don't know half the people here now. The world has shuffled itself. I'm amazed this place is still going actually. I was prepared for the domain name to have lapsed.

There are still various TCs in the works, and people keep churning out user maps so there's always new content to try. The community has always been undergoing an exponential decay meaning that the loss of members really slows down over time. Plus there's occasional murmuring of Gearbox thinking about a new Duke game, however nobody's really bothering with speculation until we have a pretty good idea what the game could be like.

I don't have a big thing about Duke Nukem. I only played the demo level of DNF and lost interest. I can understand people feeling tired and moving on. I don't blame them. I do find the meta discussion interesting though. I didn't bother with more than glancing at the Bombshell trailer. Given inter-generational and social changes I don't know if anyone knows what the game would be like. Things evolve so it's possible the brands could be retired... I do wonder though if like changes in workplace practice and expectations games like Duke Nukem and Bombshell might find their place. I'm not sure they will be mainstream again as they were because the market is now more diverse.

It's kind of a shame 3DR goofed up. They had a good legend going and things were cool until they weren't. I don't know if they could recapture the magic again. Gearbox don't do anything for me.

Another possibility is 3DR discover within themselves to take the same original magic and start over. It would be the same DNA in a different package. You may even like the new one more than the old one! The possibilities... are... intriguing...

Oh, dear.I do talk rubbish don't I? No change there!

As far as I can recall I discovered Duke on my father's Windows98 PC (I was born in 92 so I think I was less than 10) and that game used to scare me to hell especially in E2L4 with that spooky music and dark ambiant and everything ... and all the thing with babes actually left me indifferent despite my young age back then :/

I suppose the only influence the game had on me is immunity to other FPS styles like Halo or COD, thanks to Duke it feels frustrating to me not being able to carry more than 3 guns and being able to roam all arround the place and explore ... good old days never to come back

I liked the old games. They were a new experience which helped a lot I know but they had more adventuring which I liked. They also left more to your imagination. At least, this is how I feel about them.

I haven't played many newer games. COD was the last one.

I think I really just put up with Duke. I liked the adventuring and surprises and stuff. The rest is oversold or underdone.

The problem for me is I like the idea of games more than the games themselves. Ack. I can't figure this out...

I understand.

On my end I only played Black Ops 2 and even though I had a better time than I anticipated I just keep getting frustrated by how it's done, having only 2 guns while the guy is surely strong enough to have 3 and your pace is limited unlike in Duke3D where you go as fast as you want.
Also you clearly see with 3D that the devs had imagination and a project in mind whereas in modern FPS they just obey to chart which is not good for the devs and consequently not for the player either. Also FPS back then were much more varied than nowadays.

You had stuff like Witchaven or Unreal or Quake or Duke3D and Doom, all of them are unique in their own way whereas nowadays you have Battlefield and COD which (to me) are just the same, only Resistance and Wolfenstein were good, original and pleasant in my regards.
I never played DNF but I saw an LP of it and I wasn't disappointed by the graphics or the ambiance, universe and all, I was just disappointed by how it was done and played just like a COD is which is totally against the spirit of Duke, if you had had 3 guns I would have been less disappointed but still

I liked Duke because although it was dark, his humor balanced the games well. I bought Wolfenstein: The New Order recently and the old school-ish gameplay was refreshing but I have a hard time playing it again because I don't enjoy shooting humans in the face as much as Duke's monsters. Most FPS are humorless. If games like GTA didn't have self awareness and a sense of humor, I probably wouldn't play it either.

I also love the art direction in Duke 3D. Modern but with futuristic and cyber punk tones - in DN3D you have an old, stingy, rat infested apartment but then there's a teleport in the corner... Or the industrial looking elevators... Gearbox needs to study that part of Duke 3D and bring that back. 3D Realms started to in one of their DNF builds but then abandoned it even though it's in every other Duke game. I do filmmaking and Duke definitely influenced me in terms of tone and art style. If I had big budgets to work with I'd really commit to it. My avatar is from a storyboard of mine. DNF started to become futuristic in the DLC but then it abandoned the urban, modern tone too.
