Ok, I am actually a female. It is actually MsBlackCat. It shouldn't matter what gender someone is "here", but it does. I see how gamer guys react to female gamers, and don't really care for it. Still a Duke Nukem and gaming fan, though not as big a fan as MBC. He doesn't come here anymore except vicariously through me when I ask him something about networking (he is a computer network engineer) or computer gaming that I don't know about.
Besides, whats his is mine anyway, so I really do have a huge game collection and computer room. :)

Well that will certainly help in me finishing up that octabrain sculpture (?)

:D Good for you man, I mean, girl. Gotta get used to this!

See what I mean? It shouldn't matter! :D
Don't get excited as I am actually 50... which shouldn't matter "here" either, but it does. See what I mean? Sculpture just went back on hold I'll bet. Hehehe

Hehehe...

A few years ago after Duke Nukem came out, MBC kind of left most forums. Before Duke Nukem Forever came out, I used to come here, 3D Realms and GearBox to read about games sometimes, not every day like MBC though, but I didn't make or need an account to just read. I was going to make an account here, but he said not to because he would have to explain to moderators why our IP's are the same and then if I accidentally up or down voted one of his post it was kind of a conflict because of people with multiple accounts being against the rules... or something to do with that. No big deal, but I had stuff I wanted to say sometimes... so after Duke Nukem Forever came out and he quit coming here more than once every week or two, I pretty much took over his account.

Sure when I show pictures, most of it is his stuff, but that really doesn't matter. I still like sharing pictures of his amazing collection of games. I used to like when he was excited about being here, and I think if he had time, he would be here more. He doesn't care that I ask him about things that I type here, he is almost always nearby. Other than sharing his gaming stuff, the rest is me. In most ways, my gender doesn't and shouldn't matter here... has been kind of fun to see how male I can type and how people type with you when they don't know. Something that is difficult to experience in real life for sure. :)

Anyway... I am sure most people won't read this thread, so it can be the secret of a small circle... Shhhh! :D

and if you're as old as you claim to be, then you'll remember that video games didn't start specifically targeting boys & young men until sometime around the mid to late 80s when home consoles (3rd gen) finally took off and became popular & affordable, and that demographic was enough to sustain the market.

I'm sure.

nb4 conspiracy theory about boobs keeping girls from having enough coordination to play games:
the young girl demographic had enough of a market share to sustain itself, but due to the "video game market crash" in the early 80's, the video game industry was barely afloat and they needed the cheapest way to recover - target the larger of the two consumer groups. Since this was the money tree, it just sustained itself despite games that were extremely popular with women and sold very well (like Myst).

Or The Sims, which was the subsequent best selling PC game on CD after Myst.

You would think that the Wii, a console targeted mostly towards non-avid gamers (I hesitate to use the word "casuals" due to the connotation), would sell better and have a higher longevity given its broader target demographic. I guess it's just more ways than one in which the culture of gaming has changed over the years.

Also interesting that GTA has been a recurring best-selling series since there are no female main characters. I guess that being a necessity for women to want to play is also a myth.

Wii outsold the xbox360 & PS3 for a couple years, and it did fairly well for four or five years - but the market is fickle and they always want the latest and greatest, the wii U just didn't compete that well with the xbox1 & ps4 due to a wimpier processor, weak games, and lacking the "feel good" stuff like achievements & being able to talk smack to a bunch of people while playing. It had about %20 of the market compared to the other two consoles - not a hit, but not really a huge flop either.

Yeah... the early games weren't gender specific really... even at a social level. When the 2600 exploded onto the scene games like Pong and Asteroids were gender-neutral. I wasn't really a big gamer through most times in my life anyway. I never played Duke Nukem 3D until I met MBC (about 12 years ago). We used to play SO many different games on the LAN here, DooM to Quake II, HeXen II. It was fun for a year or two, as far as a regular thing, then I got tired of it mostly.

I really got back into gaming when treasure hunt games started getting big. I played Vice City a LOT when it came out, but not the missions, as they are too hard and not interesting. I just like to drive around and blow stuff up. :D I have spent more time with the Sims games (PS2) than anything else probably. Then MBC got a PS3 to play Duke Nukem Forever on... I lived on Playstation Home until it closed, but play lots of games on PS3 like Little Big Planet, PAIN!, Rag Doll Kung Fu and a few others. I still play Duke Nukem Advance sometimes... that is my favorite. I like the Egyptian areas. :D I liked Critical Mass also... I know it is messed up in some ways, but it was/is still fun to me occasionally. :)

Anyway, I actually am a couple of years old than MBC (who is 48).
I do agree that most males like competition more than women do... or that is why I think the market went with what sells. I think the Wii showed that... I have one... I relate its success to the types of games offered... many non-competitive games on there seem to be more appealing to females. Yeah, I have Wii Fit and don't use it... but I have Sports Resort I play with my son. :D
Ok, end of ramble. :D

I'm about the same age so I grew up in the 70s & 80s. When I took an elective computer class in school it had apple IIs and half the class was girls. Computers and games really weren't aimed to be gender specific. That's just the mentality and environment I grew up in. The last console I really played was a sega genesis (w/ the 32 bit plug-in adapter).
I did own a ps2, but my son has focus issues (aspergers), and I had to get rid of it shortly after I got it because it became the only thing he wanted to do. He would throw a fit when he couldn't play it, (getting up in the middle of the night to sneak onto it. having a break down every time we had to leave the house to go to the store or something, etc)
I was in the military in the 90s and moved around a lot, so I really didn't follow the gaming scene too much after '89 until the mid 00s when I stopped changing duty stations every couple of years.

So I've always thought games were for women and men - and shit like gamer gate and Anita Sarkeesian were just bored and annoying people making an issue out of nothing.

My wife used to be into video games and she'd play a lot of the same games I did, like Legend of Zelda & Sonic the Hedgehog. The trend continued after we got a PC; she never really got into duke3d or doom, but she liked wolfenstein and blake stone, as well as side-scrollers like jazz jackrabbit & commander keen. We did diverge after a few years - I was more into FPS & RPG where she got into games like Zoo tycoon and the Sims.
She even got me into the sims (i still do play every great once in awhile) - I kinda liked the time management and balancing act you would have to do to keep the sim happy and have them progress in their careers (and they even had a skin where you could play as Duke Nukem) - so I'd emulate a few of the levels within the limits of the engine.

Travel with my second husband (Marine) was a lot of why I didn't game other than some Arcade games... we lived in Japan for quite a while and didn't game really any while there. The only game I played while I was there was Try to Kiss the Intoxicated Asian women at the bars Hehehe... I have the high-score. :)

But even when younger, dad didn't like the video game thing, but my friends had most of the systems before disks... but by the time the console optical disk era started, I was out completely with life in the way... with the exception of occasional detour through an arcade at a mall. Most women don't like to do that, so it was always a conflict with most female "friends". Then I met MBC and he has seemingly every freakin game in the world and almost every console... I think around 1600 games, so I do enjoy just trying different things as they are all hooked up and labeled for instant play.

When I was a teenager I have a friend who have Shadow Warrior on his PC. For some reason, the sound is always off in this game. I stopped playing SW with him since I was 15. So, even today I don't know how this game sounds like. Literaly.

It would be nice if "MBC" actually made it clear about who or what is engaging people on this forum.
Some days he's a she, other days she's a he.

Not that I really even care, but this gender vaguarity is childish, annoying and filled with attention whoring.
Nobody gives a shit what gender you are, but you are playing some twisted game with it.

I think it has a good bit to do with being behind a mask of sorts. Some people don't feel any desire to share anything with others I think... I was in an odd mood and feeling like I can't be myself. I am going to see about getting my own account. MBC doesn't really use this one anymore, so I started using it a few years ago because of what I described above.

Nope. Not really. Even if you're pranking or telling the truth, as long as you continue to behave and act like you always have, then it doesn't matter.

Some people are reserved and hide behind the anonymity, others have no filter and stop just short of giving out bank account numbers and home addresses.

I'm more of the latter, but I still keep some stuff private.

Doesn't matter. Not like anyone knows if I'm telling the truth either; and it's not like anyone's ever going to show up on my front porch to verify anything I say.

Yeah... maybe people could think of it like this... "If this is the stuff I WILL tell you, can you imaging the stuff I wouldn't?" Scary hu. :)

No, I simply want to know who I'm talking to with some consistency.

The way you left it seemed like it could be 2 people, sometimes a woman, sometimes a man.
I knew there must have been some reason the images you posted of supposedly "yourself" seemed "off" to me.

AND! Don't you worry, I won't treat you any differently :)

What's to care about gender? It's not like MBC is discussing sex/gender-related topics, is she?

But maybe, just maybe Robman will censor himself :) when the urge arises to tell a very demeaning to women joke if a woman is in the middle of the conversation.

I hope he was joking. Because I see no reason to care unless he wants to flirt.

So you're saying he's already been burned once when he hit on what he thought he was woman before?
The trauma when "she" told Rob "her" name was Candy in a voice two octaves below Barry White.

I have never answered anything private of MBC's... if you ever typed with him in an email, it was him. He sees and responds to them from his eMail directly. That is the only instance. I often pretend to be him for the sake of non-disclosure... if he asks me to share his newest game related images or something I will. The few/rare pictures of him, are him... usually to share a gaming shirt or something, but I post them and link them for him. I kind of miss when he had time to be here every day. Was a happier time. He used to work from home almost all the time, but now has a couple of places he goes more days than not. I do give him updates from here often. He likes the idea of this place and always donates to this and other forum causes. If a new Duke was to start, he would probably want to be back here directly. Remember the chainsaw pictures? I posted those... I had to ask him the technical things I didn't know about the saw(s) but that was me.

Robman said:

If I were you, I would just put me on the ignore list or never post in any thread I post in. Now that would show me! Wow! I feel the lesson learned just thinking about it! No more educating the lowly female on the ways of life. No more allowing me the privilege of learning from the master of... whatever you call what you do... Well, I have to go now, but I can't remember if it was to the laundry room, kitchen, or bedroom... has to be one of those... of course.

Yeah... that was kind of my thought also. Like I said before, it shouldn't matter, but it does. Is like every post ends up tempered or modified based on your gender. I don't care for most of that... at least on a forum. The only context I have "lied" in, was when I share gaming images or information that I didn't know myself. It doesn't bother me at all, because the information is true, as are my views.
