Coming to PC, Xbox One and PS4 in 2016

Quote

Five years have passed since Lo Wang shattered the alliance between his deceitful former boss and the ancient gods of the shadow realm. Despite noble intentions, Lo Wang's efforts to annihilate the darkness corrupted the world, creating a strange and savage new order where humans and demons live side by side.

The once feared warrior now lives in the shifting wildlands outside the reach of his enemies and the neon glow of Zilla's cybernetic metropolis, scratching out a meager existence as a hired sword for the local Yakuza clans. When a simple mission goes wrong, Lo Wang is drawn into a volatile conflict between a brilliant young scientist, a controversial cult leader, and a terrifying new drug known as Shade. The sharp-tongued hero must once again wield lethal blades, staggering firepower, and archaic magic to purge the world of evil.

AFAIK it is not a filing by them, but a trademark filing originally by Scott Miller and George Broussard that was first transfered from them to Shadow Zilla Holdings LLC and then from Shadow Zilla to GHI/Devolver. I found out about this a while ago.

So Devolver officially owns the Shadow Warrior IP now?

Yes, they do. As as I can tell, it is actually the only IP they own.

Any chances it might be because 3DR are trying to raise funds to buy back the Duke IP?

Devolver didn't buy it from 3D Realms, but from Scott and George.

I'm sure they'd be willing to put it towards Duke for 3DR, though.

I have one spare copy of the first game if anyone would like to try out the game before thinking about the sequel.

I highly recommend you do so. It's a great game, IMO. :)

I'm not a big Devolver fan, but with as good as the newer Shadow Warrior game was, this purchase was a no-brainer for them. Flying Wild Hog did very well with the game and I hope a followup is already in the works.

Finally the announcement I've been waiting for this for almost a year :)
Would be fun to hear the price of shadow warrior and if 3D Realms gets any part of the money and if Interceptor knew they had no part in shadow warrior at all..

Actually I bought it when it came out, but hardware problems prevented me from playing this and many other games.

I hope they took my suggestion about tweaking Metal Gear Rising's slicing system in the game somehow :)

Looking forward to this beast!

I wonder who Lo Wang's buddies are. Perhaps Wang has acquired some old friends a la Blood 2: The Chosen? If so, I hope they have their own distinct personalities and skills. The drug Shade seems to be similar to the drug Elexis from SiN develops to alter the people into monsters. I'm curious as to what aspects they'll improve upon, and whether we might see and classic Shadow Warrior aspects returning (if only).

This looks great! Though part of me wishes his two friends were Duke and Caleb lol, but as long as they don't get in the way like in Daikatana, that'll be fine!

I think the other characters are only in the game if you are playing co-op, otherwise its solo and they aren't around. I also doubt they'll have distinct personalities as judging from the screenshots, they are all covered up except for Wang.
I'm totally ok with that, let him stay the star and let the faceless side characters remain as side characters.

There's an unofficial 1.3 patch that edits the AI nodes and also makes modifications to level geometry to make the AI and game better and more balanced.
I've been playing it since the steam sale started (It'll probably be the only game I buy during it which is saying something) and haven't had an issue with the AI at all, I've actually been impressed with how they'll climb ladders, duck under moving platforms, etc etc.
Plus, the original game came out in 2000, ofcourse the AI wasn't going to be perfect.
Whats ridiculous is the marine AI in the Halo games, even ones that are current gen, the AI still can't drive a fucking vehicle properly. We're at a point where game graphics aren't going to be as hugely improved as they were from say N64 to Playstation 2, so its high time developers spend more time creating better AI than better anti aliasing or shaders or some such.

I remember an interview of some devs about AI. He claimed that for a few years it's been very easy to create AI in video games that are as good or better at the game than the average human, however the point has never been to do that. For enemies, the point is to create AI that seem intelligent enough, but which are also stupid enough so that the average player can outsmart it in ways he can find. That's where the fun comes from, the player thinks the enemy is intelligent and it makes him feel superior to "outsmart" it, even though in reality he only used the "opening" the devs left on purpose.

As for coop partners, if they're as intelligent and good as the average player, it means they're going to play the game instead of you. You'd be fighting "against" your coop partners in order to actually have something to do in the game.
I'd also say that it's probably really hard to find a good balance for coop partners. A very wide range of players are going to play the game, from competition winning FPS players to people whose it is the first video game they ever play. An AI coop partner that seems too stupid for you might seem too good for other players.

Personally I think this whole "outsmart the AI" gameplay in post Half Life FPS is part of what killed the genre. It ends up being very limited, once you've played the game a couple of times you know the AI by heart and there is no more room for any interest anymore since the only fun you get of that kind of gameplay is exactly to find ways to outsmart the AI.

Yeah, the unofficial 1.3 patch make the AI far, far better than the original one.

The original AI is one of most reasons which I rage-quit and then cheating the game...

Funny thing is I've been playing Daikatana recently. It's not so bad, thanks to the options allowing you to save whenever you want without the stupid save gems. The buddy AI, though stupid in most pathfinding situations, are surprisingly complex in other areas (like climbing a ladder, jumping off an ledge to another ledge, and crouching in a vent). It makes me wonder what the buddy AI would have been like if Romero had just stuck with the original Quake engine.

To paraphrase Gggmanlives' observations about Daikatana, current games are far more capable at pulling off complex buddy AI mechanics than in the 90s. If Romero had the insane notion to remake Daikatana, he'd probably have an easier time making the buddy AI work (if he has the right programmers, that is).

Well, Daikatana's getting remade anyway by a fan as an open source game for the Dark Places Quake engine, called OpenKatana. There hasn't been a tech demo or beta release yet, but it looks good.

Back to what I was saying. Shadow Warrior 2's buddy AI less likely to suck then it would back then (we hope).

Now it's getting me thinking: why hasn't there been a Daikatana mod for the original Shadow Warrior? That might make it more fun.

Holy shit, I'm now 10x more excited for this game. Lo Wang seems much more mobile than in the first one, with the parkour and double-jumps. Furthermore the gameplay looks really vertical which is fantastic. And perhaps more importantly, the shotgun actually seems to do a moderate amount of damage and have a proper ROF. Sounds like FLW really listened to the fans when it comes to how to improve the first one. Plus the level design seems a lot more open and less linear. They're giving the impression that you can explore what would have been "unreachable scenery" in the original game, we'll see how well they pull that off and if they can maintain that design decision consistently throughout the game.

Overall looks much more interesting than Doom 4 from what both games have shown so far.
