There is nothing different here compared to the english version, actually I'd say the translation is too literal. "Hé bien vous vous êtes fait niqué..." would have worked better in French imo. Nobody would ever say "tu es niquée"

I believe the person who translated the game were handed out a succession of lines to translate out of context, without even being able to play the game; thus why he couldn't even get the joke.
That's how video game translations are done in 99% cases.

The way dubbing is done with video games is : the dubber have the "specter" of the sound files/lines to dub and try to make their own lines not longer or shorter than the original, and respect the tone as well !
En fait, la partie marante est celle où Mary Holsom dit : "Duke, on perdra tous ces kilos en moins d'un mois, promis !" on sait alors qu'il s'agit là d'un voeu pieux car une femme qui a accouché ne perd pas ses kilos superflux en une semaine !

Je comprends pas pourqouis les Francophones doit toujours user des "Dub Artists". Quelle est le problem avec des subtitles? (BTW I didn't bother to put this reply into a French spell checker so forgive my probable spelling mistakes)

There is no such thing as good dubbing; or it's very very rare. Like you say, dubbers do 'mock ups', they imitate in another language (and like I said with often bad translations EVEN on stuff that are easy to translate, so let's not even get into puns or things that are impossible to translate to another language); and like you say they are restricited to in their dubbings, by the length or the movement of the lips they try to stick to, which makes thing even worse.
In comparison, the original is just... you know, himself, the actual thing, pure acting with the lines, tones, length, voice, etc actually wrote or thought for the thing.
Nobody would ever picture Duke's voice as someone other than John St Jon.
Picture yourself a Michael Jackson song. Now picture that with someone singing instead of him, trying to imitate him in French.
That's dubbing, dubbing in movies/games/etc is just as bad as that. You're replacing a part of the original creation by a mock up restricted by rules the thing wasn't made in mind for.

Not dubbing is only good for greedy/lazy publishers !
Every jokes have their equivalent in every countries, it's the same for expressions, at least in french/english to my knowledge !
Daniel Beretta have even made lines more funny than the originals of John St John in DNF, such as :
My balls, your face ! > Mes couilles sur ton nez, t'auras l'air d'un dindon !
That's one dead space marine ! > Un bon marine, c'est un marine mort !
Power Armors are for pussies ! > Les armures c'est pour les tarlouses !
It's down to you and me, you one eyed freak ! > C'est entre toi et moi, le borgne de mes deux !
It's time to stop pissing around and bring this big guy back into action ! > Allé on se bouge le cul, tout le monde veut voir Duke et son gros calibre en action !
I got balls of steel ! > J'ai des boules en acier trempé !

Translation FAIL! Looks like someone in the translation office has political views he couldn't resist weaseling into the game
Translating "That's one dead space marine" to "A good marine, is a dead marine" literally boggles my mind and jumps the boat on what the line was supposed to refer to completely (Doom, not Anti-US-Army -sentiment)
And this:
Quote
Also completely misses the point. "My balls, your face" has Duke comparing someone's face to his balls, not as the translation implies: "My balls on your nose, and you'll look like a turkey"... *cough* ... *cough* Yeah.

Some expressions don't have equivalents, and by definition most puns can't be translated. Like, okay, let's say you make a pun on the word 'pussy'. In both French and English they share 2 meanings : female cat and woman genitalia; however in english it also means being "weak/coward", and that's only in English; so if your pun involves that 3rd definition, you can't translate it. And in this example, you're already lucky that the 2 first meanings are there in both languages; which is often not the case for many words.
I very often see translations in which they translate the puns literaly, and therefore the joke is lost because the pun only exist in one language. In SOME cases they replace the pun by another one, but in this case, that means the line is COMPLETELY different; which if you ask me is even worse because you're completely changing the line by another, it's supposed to be translation, not writing. If it can't be translated, well tough shit, you can't do anything about that, but that doesn't mean you should write something completely new to replace it just because it's supposed to be funny (especially when your job is NOT be funny, it will often come out worse).
And yes, the examples you provided are terrible ones. It's like they didn't even understand the jokes, and either extrapolated on what they THOUGHT the joke was (except they completely missed the point to begin with so the whole thing is off), or replaced the joke by another.
Also, a game like DNF, shouldn't be hard to translate. See how bad this is, and now imagine something a lot more complicated to translate than DNF (like, most things?).... Even 'notorious' books translate very often do terrible things, going as far as NOT translating something too hard to translate (by revoming it or dumbing it down); their excuse being the lack of time for the deadline and how little they get paid per page (they don't even proofread themselves), but often they're just terrible.

I have even done a mod that lets you playing Duke 3D with DNF's Daniel Beretta lines : http://forums.duke4....3d-and-add-ons/
Secondary, 200 Millions peoples are speaking French on Earth, that's a good reason for translating/dubbing...
But for sure, France having a morron-ish socialists/communists/facists/nazis/greens president/government doesn"t help for influence ! (the state of my country/homeland saddens me )

In Dutch speaking countries, there is no use of dubbing, hence the citizens of such countries are better in English than those that do employ dubbing. It's a stereotype that the French, Italian and German people are horrible in (and condescending towards) English, which I blame on the presence of dubbing.
Now, I like French as a language and consider it to be indeed a very important world-language with an extremely rich and unique vocabulary. Though if I bought a Duke game, and Duke was walking around yelling things in Dutch, I'd feel cheated yelling "that's not really Duke" and toss the game out (that's what I did with DNF and he spoke English BTW ).

I don't know, it seems silly to demand that every game/movie/whatever is spoken in a language you understand. What's wrong with subtitles?
I'm not that good at speaking French, but I don't expect French movies to be dubbed in English/Dutch or whatever.

That's your smart solid argument?
Why do you think I was able to pick on the translations? Because I'm French.
BTW my point since the beginning was : YOU obviously can speak English. If that's so, why would you rather have a dumbed down, literaly wrong, mock-up, rather than the original which you can understand just fine?
#82 Posted 11 June 2014 - 04:21 AM
Actually, Germans are very good in English, but Frenchs are kinda bad for foreign languages because they don't even master their own language (they are not even able to say "bonjour" , "au revoir" and "merci") !
Just to say that I am the exception which proove the rule !
There is a part of one of my favorite french movies "L'Aile ou la cuisse" (junk food theme)... french actors are good in English actually :

"You have the con" is a naval term for when the captain or another ranking officer temporarily defers command of the bridge (operations deck) to another officer. It was said frequently by Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Duke proclaiming "I have the con" is probably him asserting command since Picard is nowhere to be seen.

I've noticed that in the french file containing these lines, these lines have all been dubbed, and some of them have been in the trailer/teaser of the DLC, such as the Doctor Proton saying : (When people will say "Hail to the king", it will be "Hail to me") !
I've learned that the Nickname for the Doctor Proton is Doctor Smith...
General Graves and Doctor Proton argue-ing... General-Graves : (What are you searching for, Proton ? We all know that you don't care of humanity !), Doctor-Proton : (Oh, but I do care of this bucket of crap you call "humanity", Graves !) !
