360 Demo Leaked? Do not support piracy!

It's pretty well established now the Gearbox forums are run by a pack of rabid assholes. Still can't explain why some people get infractions while others are outright banned for saying the same thing or nothing at all in my case.

who knows.. But ya gotta feel pissed after being infracted or banned for doing more or less...
Ya know what i think is best?
the ol' trick of not checking up on anything.. I mean alot of games im into ive never followed the hype and been better off .. When i enter an EB store or Gametraders to see my game is already out there and whats this its cheap now too!!!
Beats being so close to a game like this to get knocked down by the very company who you intend to give your money to either way... i think the smart thing to do, that ill be doing for myself come the NEXT duke game.. ill just go 'ok that's fukn great but im keeping well away until i see it in the shops'... Why coz im one who isnt known for his patience, .. Im one of those 'quite people' .. nuff said.... :D :( :)

It could work like this... I used to see cops do this often.
They pass someone speeding and shake their finger at them.
Another car speeds by and he say something "Damn, these people are in a race today."
Another car come by speeding substantially also...
So the cop says "Thats enough!" and turn on the radar and gets set... the next car gets the ticket.
(I used "car" intentionally because I notice a pattern of not focusing on the violation as "people" but objects)

This happens when the cop or moderator objectifies the bad behavior as the single object being dealt with... removing the individual from the equation. It is extremely common behavior... and very irritating.

Another metaphor might be, they have taken their tolerance and used it as a glass of water filled... each time someone takes a drink of water from the glass, the person who takes the last drink gets punished... not everyone who took away from it.

I handled this constantly at several of my jobs. One thing I have learned about it... pointing it out makes you the one that just took that last drink!

***edit***I would like to add that handling things this way doesn't work well on forums because we are too "separate" and the threads are usually too long for the bannings and infractions to teach us any lessons by example. "You can't give em all a ticket..." heard that too many times.

In retrospect, I'm pretty glad that I didn't end up as a moderator over there. I was always the mod on 3DR who was anti-censorship, anti-outright banning and so on and it's pretty clear now that my mindset wouldn't have been compatible with theirs at all. I was actually asked by Joe to be a mod there originally but something about the whole thing made me hesitate, and by the time I finally said alright and that I'd give it a try, it was a few days later and they already had enough hive mind foot soldiers so Gearbox told him he couldn't add me. :)

It looks like Joe isn't even doing the banning/infracting at this point, it appears the other admins are doing that.

And I totally agree with TX.

Still, like MrBlackCat said, it's their forum, their rules. So I'll just be an inactive lurker over there until the real demo is released on June 3! :)

Actually I got banned from 3DR a few times, so I don't think they are really anti-ban. Maybe the same users that are now in GBX like Kalki, Joe, etc. Support massive bannings. Dunno.

Anyway, I wanted to add that the leaked demo has the OLD grabbag music, the one musicallyinspired hates :) So it's probably a really old version.

I have no reason to lurk on the GBX forums. I don't know the people over there. And the news are nearly just as fast here as the GBX forums.

I was given an infraction by Joe for Piracy, I will be asking to have my infraction removed after the public demo launches. Stupid leaks, I mean they are not bad vegetables, try making it into soup with some asparagus or spices.

Anyone else find it odd that GBX is pissed over a leak of a demo that doesn't even fully work?

It's strange, yes. GTAG users who tried this have reported graphical glitches and the 2nd (desert/mightyfoot) level being unplayable. That, and the same material has already been seen and heck, I even played it @ firstlook...

It's odd, indeed. Although, some places that posted footage of the demo had a version that had no glitches whatsoever. Both levels loaded fine, no picture issues, and they said it was a blast to play even with occasional slight freezing and Pigs running into walls.

Not at all... as a software company they don't need an incomplete product out there making their polished final look bad. I say stamp that crap out with an iron fist... but I am maybe a bit "lazy" in some ways so sometimes choose "violence" or absolutism in this case, for its efficiency, not its eloquence.

I was reading the Gearbox forums yesterday and realized how much I hate the atmosphere there, leading me to delete the bookmark. I have to say, even with the bits of forum policy I didn't entirely agree with, the situation on the 3DR forums was much more favorable to me than what goes on there. Having rules that nobody is allowed to question anything a moderator says or does is way too close to the dictionary definition of fascism for my tastes. I still like Joe and talk to him from time to time though, but that's besides the point since I'm pretty sure none of what goes on there is his doing.

I like Gearbox and all (especially since they saved the game I've been waiting on for more than half my life) but their forum staff seems to need an overhaul. Having some ideological community where everybody gets along and says nothing but things you want them to say is an impossible pipe dream, especially when your method of trying to achieve it is to just censor and remove anyone who doesn't fit the hive mindset. I understand that they want to maximize profits from the game and that they view everything that even slightly opposes their positions as a threat to that, but when was the last time trying to cover something up and pretend it didn't happen actually worked, especially when it's all over the Internet?

Then why not release the real demo now and show people what it is really like. Releasing the demo in June just seems stupid to me, you cant stop everyone from playing the leak and telling people what it was like.

It would have made more sense to have made a small statement clearing the whole thing up. Just something small and simple like, "It's a rough demo that, in no way represents the FAC demo or the final product. We would prefer if this wasn't discussed on our forum as we don't want people becoming confused or mistaking this leak as the finished product and we personally do not condone or support this unintended release in any way".

I do not know.
I only speculate that they don't have a Demo complete... considering how close they cut it on the game itself, I don't think there even is a Demo.
The Demo they showed around the world was under lock and key... no one could take it and tamper with it etc. They will not have that luxury when they drop this Demo. It will be violated in every way in minutes. Securing a Demo is about 1/4 of the work in my opinion.

The other factor I think exists is that they want the public release of the Demo to be excellent... because this Demo will have epic level of historical value and is supposed to represent the final product... not like all the other Demo shown which were played with the understanding they were NOT complete, not representative of final product... not expected to be "perfect" or representative of 14 years... as unfair as that really is.

That is how I see it.

Valve and id software did that exact thing when they faced similar leaks and the community rallied behind them (especially in Valve's case). Both companies are still doing pretty damn well today so I dunno what the hell is Gearbox's excuse. Treating their entire community like criminals will only encourage bad behavior, not prevent it.

I utterly hate that. We did nothing wrong, only want to exchange information about that situation, because we HONEST customers get NOTHING, but WE get raped at the end.

WTF is up Gearbox?

Pretty much agreed, i do have my own experiences with the 3dr community guy - feels a whole different person once he works for GBX or it just seems , maybe i didn't knew him so well, but this doesn't prove anything in regards with bans so ... 'll leave it at this.

That's not fascism, that's communist dictatorship in it's purest form. I should know about it, I lived in it for a while until shit hit the fan in the 89...

Suppress=DevBsp

This could indicate using D3DBSP game mapping format , but they changed engines , D3DBSP is a format which John Carmack created = ID Software, but i guess EPIC uses it too ? , Well they do have very similar mapping tools (2D, perspecive views, kind of really hard to perfect , i like cryengine sandbox a ton lot of easier :))

EDIT: yeah Epic has their own BSP format , it's called the same cause it's the "technology"(just a mathematical algorithm) which was known, but never before evolved to 3D visual space.. (quake)

this is not anything big so , incase someone finds something, plese don't post it for spoiler safeness! ... im just looking around pretty much doing nothing much, oh and i do not own an xbox360 :D

Hmm - why doesn't the industry make fully customizable controls for Xbox :(

they just need to let the user open open a similar file to defuser.ini ... how hard is that :)

"D3DBSP" is not a format John Carmack invented. Carmack popularised Binary Space Partition trees for use in videogames, yes, but the concept of using BSP to split 3D space dates back to 1980 by Henry Fuchs (building on work by Schumacker et al. from 1969) and is simply a term for a type of hierarchical spacial data structure which splits a volume of 3D space in two and then each of those two volumes into another two and so on. Virtually all 3D games use a similar method of dividing space into manageable blocks, though the "Binary" part isn't necessary as it's sometimes better to use quad-trees, oct-trees and so on depending on the type of area you are attempting to describe (e.g. large open terrain is often better handled with quad-trees than BSP trees.)

Yes, Epic makes use of BSP in their engine, they have done since UE1 and still does in UE3. For engines which use a lot of enclosed areas with a focus on corridors, BSP is perfect as it makes finding positions in space virtually free compared to doing a brute force search across the whole data set. If you want a visual example of what BSP is and how it helps performance, I've got a video of a very basic, unoptimized and, tbh, a rather shoddy implementation I made last year which highlights the performance increase which makes BSP so ideal:

As you can see, when BSP is turned off the whole thing grinds to a halt, taking far too long to calculate collisions in even such a simple world. In fact, with BSP turned on there is actually substantially more objects and polygons in the world than without and it still manages to cut processing time down by a factor of ten.

So, yes, while Carmack was the one to push the benefits of BSP to the games industry, the fact DNF and any other game uses it has little to nothing to do with Carmack. Also, just because BSP trees are used, it doesn't mean the level's file format is any thing near resembling Quake's .BSP file format.

But clicking on this spoiler won't take you to the result immediately - wanna dance. Althought still proceed on your own risk - it has nothing to do with story or any content spoilers either - and it doesn't prove anything either , just hints.

Oooh, so it really wasn't a proper leak, you needed Devkit 360s to even run it and it wasn't even the real demo?

Then I guess my previous statement stands... it wasn't really a demo leak.

SEE THIS...............??? this is over at the gbx fac forums....
Yet, Yet i get a 5 point infraction for opening my mouth yet he doesnt????
see how they are picking people they wanna fuck with? being selective, letting some talk about the leak yet other not!!!
its all that **** over @ FAC forum mod....... KALKI..... just watch out for that guy. he's on the Banhammer bigtime!!!

http://gbxforums.gea...d.php?p=2318636

Apparently that post is still there after all this time. The leak is fully explained in detail in that post (including the quote) and even the words jtag and devkit are there. Well, at least we're all focussing ourselves on the FAC demo now, yet these actions on the GBX forums still give me the chills...

I like how Gearbox moderator Sh0dan said "Guilty until proven innocent is not how it works". This was barely a week before the place went down the toilet. So much hypocrisy.
