Read this again, 3D Realms is using Ion Maiden to pimp another mystery project.
How exiting.
Offence intended: market yourself, 3D Realms, but never forget who's is doing the actual work, with you right now.
And if you click on their actual website, 0 info. Thus who can actually give a flying fuck?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet,

It's been mentioned. Multiple times. In the Ion Maiden thread.

At least Hendricks now has a dumping ground for all those, "use the X Q1 port!!!!"

I'd upvote for making a trashbin for the garbage posts, but that would imply that I'm giving you credit for your work. Think I'll just 3dr you, put a link in the Ion Maiden thread, and take all the credit.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but it appears that 3DRealms is working on a new FPS, based on the Quake engine. https://www.pcgamer....ke-engine-game/

None of the articles I've read mention anything about the title of the game, but I found a clue in three PAX photographs.

So we have an unnamed game, and the name "Techno Cop", unattached to any game we know. The T-shirts also say "Coming in 2018", but we're already running dangerously low on 2018. I'm tempted to jump to conclusions and predict another "When it's done in 2001" situation...

Techno Cop is not the Quake engine game.

You know I wouldn't actually mind a new game using the ID Tech 3 engine, Star Trek Elite Force II was the last game to use the engine and that seems to have aged quite well.

Do you have a link with more information about Techno Cop?

I would tend to agree if we consider the vanilla versions of the engines, but modern Quake 1 and 2 ports are now more sophisticated than Quake 3 ports.

100 Bombshells drop out of an EDF GDF copter jumppad and must loot for different arm attachments and fight to be the last one surviving all in glorious Id Tech 5 4 3 2 1!

So is this Interceptor/Fred's team making this or is it a different developer that won't be mentioned much like Voidpoint with Ion Maiden?

The company is said to be 1C. I only know of one 1C ... here is an excerpt from their Wikipedia page:

"Primarily considered a sim and strategy specialist, 1C is perhaps the best known outside Russia for developing the famous IL-2 Sturmovik line of World War II combat flight simulators that includes IL-2 Sturmovik (2001), Forgotten Battles (2003), Pacific Fighters (2004), 1946 (2006), Birds of Prey (2009, for consoles), Cliffs of Dover (2011) and Battle of Stalingrad (2013). 1C has also developed Theatre of War, a World War II land-based game published in the West by Battlefront.com

1C has a long history of in-house development, as well as funding independent developers. 1C works as a publisher and producer with over 30 independent development studios and has produced over 100 projects for PC and consoles including titles like Hard Truck 2, King of the Road, Rig'n'Roll, Space Rangers, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, Faces of War, Men of War series, Perimeter, Fantasy Wars, Death to Spies, King's Bounty: The Legend and King's Bounty: Armored Princess.

The company continues to distribute titles, with a 2010-2011 release portfolio that included such titles as Men of War: Assault Squad and Men of War: Vietnam, Captain Blood, and Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. "

1C isn't making the Quake engine thing, just publishing it on consoles.

That's because of Ubertools which was a complete single player scripting and skeletal animation framework on top done by Ritual themselves (and is licensed out for Alice/MOHAA earlier). Also id Tech 3 isn't dead if you count its long lineage in the Call of Duty games (yes the recent ones).

The thing I brought up about the "engine advice" part is that they all have different goals and directions and none of them are perfect for every aspect, and no one here knows where they're really going, and "quake" as a reference is also way too general as people these days use that as a catch all for any of them instead of strictly the first. For all you know, being "quake-based" could mean a plot centered around an earthquake or the Quakers. It's also not a "ooh ya this old school brony's gonna buny hop pro post config's end ruile this new reto game" dork guarantee.

It should probably be noted that the IL-2 Sturmovik titles were developed by Maddox Games, a Russian company that among other things developed Z.A.R., Madspace, and a futuristic combat flight sim called Stormfighter. Maddox Games was acquired in 1999 by 1C, a leading Russian software publisher that also specialised from the start in the development of office/business software. AFAIK 1C develops games mostly through its acquired subsidiaries, although this is probably pretty moot at this point because they're a very large publishing house.

They've been working on it for 6 months already? Interesting.

3DR might have stumbled on and stuck to the secret way to easy success;

1. Grab some cheap, easy to use game development software.
2. Hire a small number of incredibly talented individuals who know that software inside and out.
3. Have them craft a game in a relatively short period of time by not focusing on/wasting huge sums of money on realistic visuals.
4. Sell the resulting fun, creative and ambitious game, taking advantage of the nostalgia factor for marketing purposes. (Come for the nostalgia, stay for the gameplay).

Of course, this has sort of been the method of making indie games for long while, but you don't see relatively well-known companies taking advantage of these ideas. Plus, any random person can make and sell an indie game. It takes some focus to find hidden gem individuals like Davox and put them on the team as opposed to more mainstream developers.

For me this is actually one of the bigger surprises this year since it came out of nowhere. In general we are blessed with many smaller or bigger retro shooter these days (Project Warlock being the most recent one) and I fully support this development.

Besides that, I wonder if anyone else besides me had to inevitably think of this while watching that GIF:

Is there any estimated release date for this new Q1 shooter already? Mid/end of 2019 possibly, considering they are already working on it for half a year and there's probably little work to do on the engine/port, meaning they can more or less focus on the levels, weapons and enemies right away...

First, let me put my conspiracy theorist hat on.

Duke Nukem 3D = 1996
Max Payne = 2001
Prey = 2006
Duke Nukem Forever = 2011
Bombshell = 2016

As you can see, major 3DRealms releases always occur in years that end either with 6 or with 1. So I'm placing my bets on 2021.

That would be interesting for sure and if they could lift Bombshell from Duke without pissing off Gearbox then I'm sure they could do the same with Talon Brave and Prey.

I'm positive they wouldn't be able to lift a single thing from Prey, Bethesda/Zenimax are VERY litigious

I think i have read that 3DR abandoned the Talon Brave Trademark in 2000, and the last version of Prey in development under 3DR didn't contain the Talon Brave character, instead it was Tommy, if i remember correctly. So they may have sold the Prey IP, but not the Talon Brave character, i guess they can use this character as well as they used Bombshell.

Well, setting the name and the portals aside, the Prey of the 90s was a lot different from the Prey of 06. So I could see them revisiting some of the ideas there.

Though, personally, I hope it's all new and from scratch and not pulling from the old worn out bag.
