I don't know how to put it more exactly, but the "feel" or Duke3D's E2 and Doom's E1 is different. In Doom, you are infiltrating vast, sprawling complexes infested with zombies and whatnot, while Duke gives you more verticality but the spaces are generally more narrow (the environments being space stations and all). I was wondering if there are Duke3D user maps with a "techbase" theme that go after the Doom "feel" without copying the actual layouts of Doom levels?

Some I can think of:
Halls Of Doom mod by Zykov Eddy
Area 59 map from Alien Armageddon
Abattoir
Alien Trilogy
Axtion

Wow, some of the parts are really atmospheric, like that future car you see in space near the station.

In the meantime I checked out almost all of the maps from ViDi's pack that use stock art, plus several with custom art and/or other content. Most of these go straight for replicating the layout of certain Doom maps (E1M1 and MAP01 being favourites among others), and frankly, they are mostly dull to play and not very good to look at. They just highlight how different the Doom level aesthetics and game balance are from Duke3D's.

Yeah, those are replicas, remakes and all that stuff. I just like to collect them like pokemons ("Gotta catch 'em all!").

Baptized in Lunar Dust

Wow, this is an excellent map. Feels very modern, but at the same time, if someone were ever to recreate Blake Stone in Build, this would probably be the way to go IMO.

but I'm not entirely sure if that's what you're getting at.

I meant that Doom, with all its limited resources, conveys the idea of a high-tech place that was infested by something otherworldly, like in Aliens and other media that use this trope. It's done in very laconic strokes compared to later FPS games but the feel is there. Conversely, in many of Duke3D's E2 levels I don't get this feeling at all. Many of the space stations' environments feel clean and functional, there are various mobs of aliens assaulting and ambushing you but rarely a sense of foreboding, that "something is not right". In fact, very often I don't get a sense of a coherent place in E2, there are disjointed rooms, each well designed on its own, but they don't click together for me into a single picture of what I'm doing.

So what I think I'm hearing here is you want a somewhat more literal Doom feeling, but with the set dressing of later games.

Alright, I can work with that.

The entire Red series probably qualifies, if you you haven't played them yet. If you haven't, make sure to get the redux versions of red 2 and especially Red 1. The Red 1 remake is legitimately one of my favorite user maps of all time, and I think it fits what you're asking for. Exploring parts of abnabandoned town (well more like the outskirts), trying to figure out what happened, and it even spreads horizontally. If you like that then maybe also consider Clear the Coast. It's slightly less intense in terms of foreboding atmosphere than the Red 1 remake, but there's still sinister undertones.

Another one, that is probably the most Doom-like in atmosphere, is It Lives by Gambini. Another fantastic user map, though note that while it has decently-sized horizontal segments, you are ultimately still trying to climb to the roof of a haunted hospital. I don't know how much of a problem that will be for you.

I brought up ABBA before, but its immediate predecessor, Alien Planet X64-2 is fairly atmospheric in how "wrong" it is (being an alien planet and all). That itself had a spiritual successor in "The Unknown Planet" which is a bit more of the same.

One I played recently was Cherenkov Station. You basically explore a derelict space station that has all the trappings of a derelict space station. As a warning it is a bit more cramped than most of the other suggestions I've made, but it doesn't tend to get as much so as E2 itself. And even then, that's mostly in the first half of the level. Second half opens up fairly wide.

Another one I played recently was "Welcome Home." It uses some custom textures (it was originally for a TC, I believe, but the enemies are all stock in its released form) that really sells the idea of an abandoned, overrun city.

If I'm completely missing the mark on what you're looking for, let me know.
