how do they work? does each armor type absorb a different amount of damage, like in Quake green armor absorbs 30%, yellow 60% and red 80%?
or do they just change the max amount of armor the player can have?
From what i can tell is the later, each armor type changes max_shield_amount to 50, 100 and 200 respectively, but my .con reading skills leave a lot to be desired

Yes, generally they work the same, although because of how damage is calculated there is a huge difference between carrying each armor type and the amount of damage you will then be able to sustain. Sometimes the simplest system ends up with the best cascading results, I guess.
Because effectively what is happening when you get hit by projectiles (and explosions) is it calculates the damage you would have received, splits the difference, and removes as much over-damage as possible on top of that. Then damage is further adjusted in a few places (for different hit types or situations), but that's the gist of it.
Most things in the game rely on simple systems getting messed around with by each other.
There is also an additional armor type in the game, which is in plain sight. Yes it might be what you are thinking and yes it does work on more than just that.
