What unofficial mods/fan-made projects can be considered real standalone Duke games?

There are some great fan made mods and levels for DN3D, but have any fans ever made a whole new Duke Nukem game? I don't mean a commercial one, as I think we'd all have heard of it if that existed, but a new Duke Nukem shooter either in the DN3D Build engine, or a different engine such as Unity, Unreal, or even an engine created specifically for the new game?

I know there have been attempts to remake the existing DN3D game in newer engines, such as that fantastic looking one from a few years back (the one that 3D Realms C & D'ed, apparently) or the interesting one on Steam that runs in the modern Serious Sam engine, but I don't mean attempts to bring the original DN3D to modern game engines, I mean a game/project featuring all new levels and story, even if it's still in the DN3D Build engine and has no unique graphics, enemies, or sounds. Something that actually feels like a new game, or at least a worthy expansion pack with levels that feel like part of an ongoing story (at least in as much as DN3D does).

Given that we Duke fans want a (good) new DN shooter game, and have wanted one since literally before the turn of the century, and given how 3D Realms/Gearbox/anyone else involved don't seem to care about us Duke fans or our money, then I'd have thought it likely that a few modding groups would decide to take on the challenge of giving us a new DN game or two. A massive undertaking, true, but some DN3D mods are brilliant which is testament to the skill and dedication of the best modders, and it's not difficult to imagine that these people would perhaps take on the challenge of creating a whole new game, from beginning to end.

Not specifically, no. I was just wondering if anyone had made any Duke Nukem games, and by 'standalone' I meant any games that have their own separate story, and where the game feels like a cohesive journey or experience, that feels like you are progressing from the beginning of a game to the end of one, as opposed to just feeling like a collection of unconnected fan mad levels.

Sorry, I've not been sleeping much (a combination of sciatica, having to work nights, and old age - I'm fifty next year, where has it all gone? :o ) and I was time wasting surfing the forum instead of writing my work report, so my mind wasn't on the post.

So something like DNF 2013 mod for Duke3d?

OR something like Ion Fury, but starring duke instead of Shelly?

AMC TC and WGRealms 2 are both on the Build engine and standalone in the sense they do not require anything else to play them, and do have their own continuous story lines.

For the second meaning of "standalone" only, I guess Alien Armageddon more than qualifies.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I do really like DNF 2013 (not played the DLC yet though), and I played Starship Troopers a long time ago, but I think for some reason I didn't play much of it, I'll give it another go.

I've not played Alien Armageddon yet, but it's been on my mental 'to do' list for a long time. I do have Ion Fury, which I'm looking forward to playing, but again I've not yet gotten around to it. I'll give both AMC TC and WGRealms 2 a go (AMC TC is https://www.moddb.com/games/the-amc-tc, correct? It sounds really good) thanks.

In theory you should play the prequel Imagination World first for understand the James and AMC background and Oblivion, also included and fixed in Nightfright's Addon Compilation where you may find other mods like what you searching, for the Zaxtor one. With then eventually The Invasion of Trequonia (however Zaxtor mapping and puzzles could make you nervous). Apparently the premise of AMC lore is that many of the adventures of Duke in past total convertions happened, among these are explicitly mentioned at least Pray Your Prayers and Murder: The EDF Conspiracy. Even Wgrealms 2 if Axon is THAT Axon.

Another reason to play IW before AMC is that ending the 4th episode in the right way will generate a file that unlock the two main weapons used in IW inside AMC.

IW is a less polished, and fairly different experience to the AMC TC. It’s a fun TC, but if he gets out off for whatever reason and then decides not to try the AMC TC, that’d be a big shame.

Duke Nukem Eternity is also worth playing, but you’ll need the Duke3D GRP.

It sounds like you would essentially be talking about creating an episode - much as the Atomic/Plutonium editions do.

As such I will self promote what I did which fits exactly that from 20 (!) years ago: http://www.r-t-c-m.c...incubation.html

There's a whole bunch of similar things listed at RTCM as well.

There's been a bunch of 2D Duke fangames over the years, mostly of rather low quality, but the only "3D" one I can remember is "Duke Nukem 2.5" (although it's unfinished and only three levels):

You know i've looked at this one a bunch of times, but I got the urge to do a playthrough of it now. After 20 years of looking at it.

Made with Raycasting Game Engine. It's kinda cute, honestly.

Also, on the subject of Duke Nukem fan games I do remember years ago someone had made a SNES styled side scroller and posted a video of the first level on their Youtube channel. I have not been able to find the thread they made here, or the video itself.

I remember there was a rather fancy-looking platformer that was even featured on the duke4 frontpage. Could it be the same one? I don't think it was ever finished though, sadly.

Yeah it had sorta Mega Man-ish graphics. Had piggies brains and troopers. It was basically like Duke 3D as a NES/SNES platformer.

There was also another one I remember from a lonnnnng time ago, which had Duke Nukem on Doctor Phil, and it acted a bit like a remake of Duke Nukem 2. It was a flash game as I recall.

That was weird.

I think those 2.5D games are probably a little too old or basic to interest me, sorry. I've never liked Wolfenstein 3D, which I've always thought was probably because I played Doom before W3D, so W3D came across as lacking.

I'll definitely give Duke Nukem Eternity a go, it looks great.

That one looked pretty cool, a shame it never got done.

Pretty sure that was "Duke Nukem: Waiting For Forever". Wasn't a flash game though, but used GameMaker. It was somewhat decent, though pretty rough visually.
